Jullien, Forrest and recuperation periods

563

We are already at the stage of the season when a return of Christopher Jullien or James Forrest would have little impact on the outcome.  It will take a scheduling miracle for the Scottish Cup to reach its latter stages before club football ends to allow players to join international squads ahead of the Euros, so the news that Chris is likely to be in recuperation until the start of next season is no real hardship.

The return of James will be a welcome sight but it is hard to see any big picture relevance, no matter how brilliant he plays.  Celtic players get little time to allow limbs to rest and recuperate, this is one such period.

Sunday night in Dingwall is the very last place in Scotland’s tourist trail, apart from the Celtic squad, who will arrive looking for their sixth successive win this month.

Ross County have not played in two weeks since defeat to Dundee United, a period that has seen Hamilton collect 5 points to put the Highlanders bottom of the table.  History records that they were the team who stopped Celtic’s run of 12 consecutive domestic trophies, when they eliminated us from the League Cup during the disastrous month of November.  We owe them one.

  1. Slippy for Liverpool 🤔

I’m pretty sure he only had the under18s gig out of courtesy and they couldn’t wait to get shot of him 🤷🏽‍♂️

According to some on here anyway 🤷🏽‍♂️

We will never know if Toney would have made a difference at Celtic because, well he’s never played for us.

So it’s all guess work and speculation.

    ————————————————————————————–

We’ll never know if Messi would’ve been better at Celtic than Mo Camara because he never played for us.

I’ve seen enough of Toney and Ajeti to know who I’d rather have. Would Toney be a guaranteed success? Of course, there are no guarantees but he’s fit, fast and is scoring goals so I’d wager that he’d have contributed more than a man who can hardly play 90 minutes and when he does play, he’s largely ineffective.

Let’s see which way both players’ careers go after Celtic and Brentford.

I’m going to “speculate” that Toney’s next club will be a bigger move than Ajeti’s.

  3. BADA BING

I agree re Ajeti i also think Barkas is not as bad as some think, he had a very good record ion Greece and the reason was that he had a defence in front of him.I would keep him strengthen the defence and get in proper coaches.

  4. It was us and Brentford for Toney. The EPL pays huge amounts for young English talent yet not even a yo-yo team were prepared to take a punt at 10m

    That suggests something doesn’t it?

  5. GEEBEE1978

Your comparisons are ridiculous, with respect.

Also Toney might be fit when we sign him……………………..but you know how that ends up.

We are “blowing out our erses” after 70 minutes, EVERY match. Toney would sort that?

Speculate away…………….it means diddly squat right now.

  6. A lot on here thought Gerrard was a useless ned but he has good coaches and Dof also good scouts.

Proof in the pudding will be if or when he goes to the epl.

  7. “Young “Celt” Liam Shaw in red card horror shame” today

What on earth are our scouts doing?

  8. CELTIC40ME on 20TH FEBRUARY 2021 8:37 PM

EPL clubs don’t take “punts” on League One players. In fact, even Davies’ move to Liverpool caused waves as it’s rare for a club like that to look to the Championship.

They want someone proven and a bit further up the food chain. Do well at a club like Brentford, get a move to a mid-ranking EPL club then, if you succeed there, the big clubs who can afford the finished article will swoop.

Brentford took a punt on Neal Maupay for under £2m then Brighton took him off them for over £20m. Why didn’t Brighton just sign him before Brentford?

They took a punt on Ollie Watkins for £1.5m from Exeter – Villa then buy him for over £30m. Why didn’t Villa just buy him from Exeter?

There is a food chain and Brentford have an excellent buying and selling policy. This is something we should be looking to learn from.

  9. PHILBHOY on 20TH FEBRUARY 2021 8:39 PM

Ajeti was also “forgotten” by two West Ham managers. His purple patch in Switzerland seems a long time ago. The guy isn’t fit for purpose (pun intended).

As I say, honest question, of the two, who do you think will get the bigger next move?

Brentford’s recruitment is lauded by those in the game. Ours has been criticised heavily in recent times. I personally believe Brentford got this one right too.

You don’t and that’s your opinion. Football is all about opinions. My personal opinion is that Toney will be in the EPL before long and Ajeti will be punted for a loss.

  10. lets all do the huddle on

    ajeti had no mobility

yes, he would score a few goals with decent service

but so did cascarino who also had no mobility

so whereas i like to get a bit of physicality into the team – because we have a team of weaklings- i also want them to be able to run

  11. onenightinlisbon on

Ajeti may on may not make it at Celtic but what about Klimala, Barkas etc. Our signing policy is as shameful as our present management team.

    CELTIC40ME

Not sure if he’s signed yet.

I’m not sure where that’s come from – the talkSPORT radio report I heard on the game said he’d signed a pre contract

  13. PHILBHOY on 20TH FEBRUARY 2021 8:49 PM

Could well be speculation but let’s face it, a huge percentage of football conversation and debate is speculation. Wouldn’t be much fun without it :)

But in all seriousness, I’m assuming you’ve seen lots of both Ajeti and Toney this season. What is it that leads you to believe we made the right choice by signing Ajeti and as I asked previously, who do you think will get the bigger next move – acknowledging that you’d be speculating :)

  14. GENE

tough question ,honestly , very few , don’t think players are giving their all this season for whatever reason , which is a shame , we have a few decent players and I would include Turnbull and a couple of others.

  15. CELTIC40ME

Someone posted earlier that Lenny would not confirm that he had signed.

    Talksport?

    Aye Ok.

  16. GEEBEE1978 on 20TH FEBRUARY 2021 8:43 PM

Toney would have been scouted by loads of epl clubs, and they wouldn’t have signed him for 10m quid for the same reason that we and everyone else except for Brentford didn’t – 10m is too much for anyone other than an exceptional talent outside the championship. He didn’t have a single age-group appearance for England.

Maupay wasn’t signed from the lower leagues, he came from France.

Brentford have a totally different model from us, they got rid of their academy a while ago. And they have never finished above 7th in the second tier in their entire history

Not really much to emulate there

  17. GEEBEE1978

What is it that leads you to believe we made the right choice by signing Ajeti

    —————————————————————–

I didn’t say that or suggest or hint at it, so is that just you speculating or making it up?

    And I’ve never seen Toney.

And I don’t know who will get the bigger move.

  18. CELTIC40ME

Brentford’s history of trophies won was posted earlier and I repeat that below.

    Hail Hail.

    CELTIC40ME

Someone posted earlier that Lenny would not confirm that he had signed.

I watched the conference, he blanked the question.

It was Adrian Durham on TalkSPORT, he’s a weapon but he knows a lot more about lower league football in England than any of us.

  20. CELTIC40ME on 20TH FEBRUARY 2021 9:02 PM

Yes, I’m aware Maupay came from France but Brighton were interested but didn’t take the “risk” until he was proven in England.

Your points are valid but it also suggests nobody wanted to sign Watkins for £1.6m but were happy to pay £33m a couple of years later. Brentford are getting right in terms of their recruitment and that’s what I meant by emulating, not the entire model.

Also, their league position is relative. For a club their size and resources, they’re punching well above their weight.

  21. PHILBHOY on 20TH FEBRUARY 2021 9:03 PM

So you’ve spent the past half hour debating and giving fairly strong opinions on a player you’ve never seen.

    Hmmmm.

  22. Brentford scouting is exceptional, look at players they’ve sold on in the last 4-5 seasons, play very good football, and lost in EPL play off final last season, after selling Watkins and Benrahma for £50 million, they are up there again this season.

  23. GEEBEE1978

So you’ve spent the past half hour debating and giving fairly strong opinions on a player you’ve never seen.

    ———————————

No, I’ve said I don’t know if he’d make a difference at Celtic, because, in spite of what he’s done elsewhere, no one knows if he’d make a difference with us because YOU ARE SPECULATING AND GUESSING AND MAKING IT UP.

He could be the next Henrik Larsson or the next absolute fud.

I don’t know and neither do you.

You’re speculating on what he’s done at Brentford. No disrespect to Brentford but in spite of them having the super striker in their team they’ve done nothing, won nothing and continue to struggle in their division.

Why should I think Toney would turn my teams fortunes around?

Don’t answer that because you’d be speculating and guessing.

No more from me on this.
