Kieran, Jozo, daring to complain about the Government

425

I lost count the number of times I heard “Worst Dundee United team I’ve ever seen” on the way out of Celtic Park yesterday. They were guileless, unable to do any more than stand in Celtic’s way, and they didn’t even do that very effectively, as Leigh Griffiths demonstrated.  I hope Mixu gets a grip on things soon as I’ve seen a better United team than that relegated.

For Celtic it was an important win on the back of a week to forget. Martin O’Neill was fond of saying the most important thing after a defeat is to avoid another one, when confidence slips it can often do so for a while.

Kieran Tierney won the free kick which led to the second goal and the penalty for the third. His energy levels were high and he looked every inch a Celtic player. Ronny knows teenage talent needs to be developed at a comfortable pace but the stage is Kieran’s right now he might just make the position his own.

Delighted to see Jozo Simunovic after a long and, for some, worrying absence. This was a difficult game to judge central defenders, as Celtic did so little defending, but what was asked of him was carried out well. He also showed a decent change of pace and sent a rasping shot on target from 30 yards.

While last week will take a while to leave the system, the next five days are enormously important: Heats in the League Cup on Wednesday before Aberdeen on Saturday. We can speculate on what’s destroyed Aberdeen, but whatever it is, there will be clear decks for the visit to Glasgow on Saturday, but before then we have one of our biggest domestic challenges of the season at Tynecastle.  Need to get it right for both.

My first reaction when I saw the Green Brigade banner yesterday was they some poor sod was likely to get huckled for this entirely peaceful and appropriate protest against a ridiculous law and ever-conspiratorial government and police. Such is the nature of the Offensive Behaviour Act that you can’t really complain about the Scottish Government confident that you are free to do so.

The Scottish Government-Police Scotland pact is set in stone. No amount of ridicule from courts to stadiums seem to affect it.  I remain appalled and alarmed.

Brendan Sweeney, legend from Celts for Change and more recently Celtic Graves, is launching his book, Celtic: The Early Years, at the Jock Stein Lounge this Thursday, 29 October. I’ve had a preview, it’s an incredible work. 1. Another piece of sycophantic claptrap from Jingle Jangle Jackson about the GSL. Ever so mildly critical yet remaining halfway up his Hugh Jarse. Pathetic garbage but at least his writing is consistent. Consistent rubbish . Hugh McIlvanney eat your heart out………… or should that be Enid Blyton .

    CELTIC…2

    (Kelleher 20, Hendry 52)

    HEARTS…0

GOALS in either half from Fiacre Kelleher and Regan Hendry saw Celtic’s Development Side impressively dispatch Hearts 2-0 in Dumbarton and move three points clear at the league summit.

Kelleher stabbed in from close range following Scott Allan’s free-kick in the 20th minute as Tommy McIntyre’s side started the match with verve and purpose.

Substitute Regan Hendry sealed the victory seven minutes into the second period, applying the finishing touch to a sweeping passing move.

John Collins and John Kennedy were among the spectators on a night where the young Hoops turned on the style and produced some sparkling football.

Allan, who hadn’t featured for the first team since the end of August through injury, started for the Bhoys and played around 80 minutes of the contest.

The inclusion of the midfielder was one of five changes to the team that put Kilmarnock to the sword in the youths’ last league outing.

Alongside Allan, in came Leo Fasan, Calum Waters, Connor McManus and Calvin Miller. Logan Bailly, Kieran Tierney, Mark Hill, Regan Hendry and Theo Archibald dropped out of the starting XI.

Unbeaten in their first seven games of the league campaign, the Bhoys looked full of confidence and intent in the opening exchanges as they quickly fashioned several promising positions.

Although Hearts had the first effort on goal from a free-kick from the edge of the box, with Ian Smith blasting over, it was the Bhoys who took control, moving the ball around crisply and pressing with fierce intensity.

In-form Aidan Nesbitt, who had scored four goals in the 6-1 aggregate UEFA Youth League victory over HJK Helsinki, was prominent in the early stages down the right, linking up effectively with full-back Jack Breslin.

After a sweeping passage of play, Breslin’s cross was inches away from being met by Miller, and the same player endured the same fate from Nesbitt’s centre. From the same source, Kelleher head wide.

Waters had to be alert at the other end on a Hearts breakaway to clear Robbie Buchanan’s deflected shot off the line. Instantly, the young Celts countered, with Miller being played in down the left but he was unable to keep his shot on target.

Despite bossing possession, the hosts were not having it all their own way, with a number of defensive blocks required to charge down shots from Buchanan and Sean McKirdy.

But, moments later, McIntyre’s side made the breakthrough. Allan was felled by Smith on the left. The midfielder’s resultant free-kick was flicked on by Breslin, with Kelleher forcing the ball home at the near post.

Neat link-up play between Miller and Waters down the left saw the latter lash a shot into the side-netting as Celtic continued to threaten. Nesbitt then came close twice in quick succession after a series of slick passing moves.

The youngster was quickly to the fore again, cutting a path through the middle of the opposition backline, exhibiting pace and skill and no little determination, but under the weight of several challenges he couldn’t maintain his balance as he entered the area.

Picking up the ball in dangerous areas, Allan was prompting proceedings, showcasing his wide range of passing skills. But he also displayed some nimble footwork before the break to glide away from several tackles and pull the trigger. His attempt was blocked, however.

The Bhoys simply picked up where they left off after the interval, with Nesbitt and Allan continuing to pose problems. A penetrative run from Allan saw him burst into the box and cut the ball back for Miller, who failed to make a connection.

It was no surprise when goal number two arrived. Collecting possession on the edge of the box, Nesbitt dummied several defenders before sending Breslin scampering clear with a reverse pass, and the defender’s driven cross was met by the onrushing Hendry, who slide the ball home at the far post.

Miller volleyed over as the young Celts maintained the intensity, but they suffered a blow on the hour-mark as the impressive Nesbitt was forced from the fray after taking a knock to his arm when a defender’s boot connected with him in the box. He was replaced by Mark Hill.

In spite of the change, the hosts continued to create openings, with Hendry denied by Gallacher twice and Hill having a shot charged down by Leon Jones.

A Hearts defender also got in the way of Joe Thomson’s effort after he had been picked out by Hendry in the box.

And the home side saw out the closing stages comfortably to record a well-deserved three points and cement their position at the top of the table.

CELTIC (4-2-3-1) Fasan; Breslin, Kelleher, McCart, Waters; Thomson, McManus; Nesbitt (Hill 64), Allan (Murray 82) Miller; Donnelly (Hendry 46)

Thank goodness the rebels won the two main votes and sent the proposals back to the Commons.

Know all about him but as a Celtic NED I would have expected him to consider those less fortunate than himself. He would have been well aware of the real losses real people would have suffered had this heartless piece of legislation gone through. The gap between the removal of Credits and introduction of other help to mitigate the losses is too great.

  13. True story-

Bhoy that goes on our supporters bus was looking for a new job & noticed an advert for drivers being taken on, with a well known bus company. The advert stated they would be interested in taking on experienced as well as non-experienced staff as full training would be given.

So my pal sends in his CV (also confirming that he has a clean licence) & some time after gets a letter saying thanks, but no thanks.

Somewhat bemused by this, he phones one of his mates who happens to work for said bus company. The guy concerned was a season book holder at ibrox & a mason to boot.

My pal explains the situation and is surprised when his mate say “did you put down on your CV that you went to St Moden’s?”

    “Aye”.

    Silence down the phone.

“Leave it with me & I’ll come back to you” his mate says.

A few days later, my pal gets a phone call offering him an interview. He gets the job & to this day, is still working for the same bus company.

This was 3 to 4 years ago.

The bigotry & hatred is still out there, however in alot of cases, it’s just dressed up differently.

These.guys refuse to wear anything green, even khaki coloured gear, as its a colour they just don’t suit. That was the reason they gave but I always had a nagging feeling, and I don’t know why, it was because they associated it with Irish catholics.
