Lack of consistency haunts Celtic again

748

Celtic have been completely dominant in Scottish football on many occasions but only once did this result in a domestic treble (the treble was won another two occasions when Celtic were only marginally ahead of the competition but were ruthlessly focussed).

At all other times we have had a morning like this, tossed out of one of the cup competitions by a vastly over-performing team.  Little more than a handful of games against weaker opponents stood between us and a treble in each of the last two years, but as we have noted for many years now, Celtic are not consistent enough to win the treble.  The evidence is substantial.

There are parallel ways we should react to this.  In the middle of a Champions League campaign we should be focused on little else, players should be rested for the challenge ahead, even if there are resultant risks, but there will be disappointment that we didn’t see a recognisable performance from those drafted into the team.  It wasn’t until Matthews, Commons and Stokes arrived last night that we looked anything like the Celtic we know.  On no occasions should we lose at home to a Championship team looking for their first away win since April.

That domestic treble from a dominant position was achieved by Martin O’Neill in season 2000-01, a time when Martin scarcely made a substitution before 85 minutes, never mind rested players.  This drew criticism, of course, as his ‘feeder’ players were denied opportunities to grow.  Despite last night’s reversal I would still rather use these games to develop the wider squad.

I also don’t subscribe to the belief that ‘every game is a cup final’.  Motivational strategies lose effectiveness if you roll them out too often.

Credit to Allan Moore and his “boys with desire and work-rate”.

Morton did indeed beat us 2-1 in Nov. 84 but I don’t know if that was the last time

Geordie Munro – I hope that you are right.

Can’t see it myself though, not with the added distraction of European football, welcome as it is.

A wee bit of competition does the game no harm anyway. It would be nice to have the title wrapped up by Christmas,I doubt it though.

Scottish football is brilliant now that the old huns are gone.

I don’t mind the other clubs wetting their beaks as well, just as long as we win the league, even by a single point.

Pretty sure we won the next game down there the following March by 7 or 8 to 2. A less enjoyable day than it sounded as I think the Casuals were out in force that day and as a result the atmosphere stunk. Don’t think we were played them again until the centenary season when we beat them every time

Do you have any friends on CQN? Just curious.

I have enough friends thank you very much. Never joined the site to ingratiate myself with other Celtic supporters. Maybe you did.

SuperSutton – I would really like to see big Tom succeed, but he was in the wrong position last night. I think he needs to sit a bit deeper and spread passes. It should have been him or Biton starting.

Tom was too easily dispossessed last night and he’ll really have to work on that, but if I’m honest I can’t see Lenny giving him enough game time to improve! His focus is on reliable defensive mids.

  11. Having recently returned to Lanarkshire after 25 years away, I must say how great it feels to have Season Books and bring the family to Celtic Park.

It is so much better that our old rivals have died and Celtic are the only big show in town.

Not having posted anything here for a while, it seems that some new posters, still in grief over the passing of their club are making fools of themselves masquerading as Celtic fans on this blog.

The facts are I am bringing my kids to 3 home Champions League matches, not to watch a new club masquerading as an old club in a cup competition I have never heard of.

I am not going to talk about finance/coaching or soccer management.

It is just great to be back and to find that good fiscal management at Celtic and greed elsewhere has changed Glasgow for good.

I happen to be one of those on here for whom the League Cup was not the one thing we won, it was the only thing. It wasn’t the first cup I saw Celtic win, that was the Glasgow Cup, but it was the next one. Oh do not get me wrong I do not expect to win it, I hope we win it. It was important to Jimmy McGrory, to Jock Stein, to Wim Jansen, to Martin O’Neill and to Gordon Strachan, and I hope that Neil will get it right and win it next season. Would I rather we won the League, the Scottish Cup or the Champions League? Absolutely, but we do not get to choose the trophies we win. We need to win them first.

21Nov/PF – I sat through that last night. At first I was extremely bored and then very frustrated and annoyed at the end. It shouldn’t have happened, but bearing in mind the current status of the football club, it’s not even remotely close to the humiliation of the ICT result.

Really don’t know where you’re coming from with that…?!

T4, I completely agree the club are in a totally different place to where they were the night of the ICT result.

In fact I remember a hun at work telling me that we were 10 years behind his club, financially and on the park.

Lol !!!!! I really wish I could meet him these days, to remind him off that.

O.K. so we are all agreed that Bobby Madd ‘un is a Bad ‘un. Nothing we didn’t already know.

No point obsessing on it though. His intervention should have tuned a 6-0 scoreline into a 6-1 scoreline and we wouldn’t even be talking about him.

Would you take a Celtic win in the nextgen tournament before success in the League Cup ?

Tony watt scores the nite again. We signed a 2 million pound striker who the manager doesn’t trust to put in against Morton yet we chased tony watt! Makes absolutely no sense to me considering we are seriously short of goal scorers.

  27. Hun skelper,

You are promoted to chief happy clapper.

Results like last night (especially as they happen all too regular ) should not be swept under the carpet. This ostrich like behaviour does not drive the analysis why and the improvements necessary.

The coaching staff are not learning from these repeated mistakes.

I have a couple of season tickets in 440 which I use when I am back in the country. Last night my son went.

There is still quality and it is being crowded out.

I am getting repetitive scrolling by symptoms.

I cannot recall any poster from the old CQN, even Kojo in the past, who posted opinions they did not believe just to wind up fellow fans. If they were funny wind-ups, you could laugh but they’re at the level of “I heard Celtic were going to sign Darren Mackie and that’s a disgrace”

It’s like your favourite pub has been invaded by crashing bores. If they do not move, you have to find another favourite pub.

I was proposing the snug solution so that those who do not want to be bothered do not have to. Those who are fans of both types of posting can still visit both the snug and the old pub.
