Legends, history, £6k and tens of thousands of Celtic fans

1401

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the 9-in-a-row CQN Charity Golf Day at Aberdour in Fife, yesterday.  The event, auctions and raffles leading up to it raised £6000, the bulk of which will go to the 1254125 appeal, while some will go to Clic Sargent, who help families with children with that dreadful disease.

Lisbon Lion, Willie Wallace, and his wife Olive, were fantastic guests, who enjoyed spending a day with 70 or so friends.  It doesn’t matter how far away Lisbon Lions live, you always find them the same way.

My sincere thanks to everyone who came along, bid of the auctions or bought a raffle ticket, all in aid of people you will never know. Thank you from all of us to John, Kevin and John, for their stressful work in pulling the event together, for the ninth year!

125 years ago a handful of people, living in a community devastated by hunger, destitution and TB, but who could make a difference, decided they would make a difference.  As a result, Celtic was born.  Celtic is not just something to brighten up your weekends, it’s not purely there to build friendships or to create common-interests across the generations, it is a movement you are required participate in.

The clarion call to all Celtic fans this year is to do more than just put your hand in your pocket, the spirit which gave birth to the concept of Celtic will only survive if those who can get involved, inspire a fresh generation by doing so.

Go register for 1254125, and commit to doing something to raise £125.  It can be anything.  You can walk a 1888 meters, go to the barbers and get a baldy to celebrate the signing of Amido Balde, it doesn’t need to be as ambitious as the 150 brave souls who right this very moment are atop Ben Nevis about to undertake the world’s highest huddle.

If you believe in this club, don’t leave it to someone else to take care of what’s important.  The same goes for your season ticket.  It has been over a century since we have been as close to the founding spirit of our club, but the sporting dramas which inspire us all are not achieved by new strikers, they are the fruits of tens of thousands fans buying season tickets.

Go stake your claim on Celtic.

I got my old man a paving stone for his 60th. We haven’t had confirmation it was down yet but it was part of the batch you must have seen. Any indication it’s nearly finished? I want to take him through with young LB when it’s done so he can see his name in Celtic history forever. he will be in with the bricks!

  12. Just been catching up. I think it was Auldheid who told of his visit to Schoenstatt in the beautiful Campsie Glen…I would say that. Yes, it is a wonderful place of peace and tranquility. Worth a visit especially in times of stress. As it is straight through Lennoxtown, those who visit the training ground should go the extra mile to this pleasant place.

Also noted a comment about American bombing. Reminded me of a Belgian who once told me in 1960 that the Belgians could take of the Germans themselves but “God protect us from the Americans”. They had unnecessarily ruined his town and its magnificent library that was full of ancient manuscripts in both wars.

Might be a one sided view of the Belgians. Try to remember that they have suffered from incursions into their lands than most nations in Europe.

  22. twist n turns,

I felt that you were overly harsh on the bookmaking fraternity and their perceived lack of compassion and generosity.

If I hadn’t witnessed an incident myself, many years ago, I would have perhaps shared your view.

A neighbour of mine, who was a compulsive punter, spent a whole day in the bookies, losing bet after bet.

He made the common mistake of trying to chase after his money.

By the end of the day, he had lost. not only his entire wages, but had run up a sub on the next week’s.

By the time he left the shop, he was pretty distraught.

To add to his despair, he tripped on a raised piece of pavement and went his full length.

To add insult to his injury, the trip detached the sole of his shoe from the upper.

This incident was also witnessed by the bookie, who had left his premises at the same time and when he saw what had happened yto the unfortunate punter, was moved to react.

He proceeded to take a large wad of notes, secured by a stout elastic band, from his pocked.

Removing the band, he proceeded to hand it to the loser, allowing him to repair the stricken shoe as he made his way home to receive his fate.

A truly heartwarming tale, I’m sure you’ll agree.

It wasn’t mate, we played Motherwell at Fir Park on the Sunday. I remember because I had tickets for Pfayr and his son and was rather the worse for wear when I turned up to meet them.

I do have an idea of the date so I’ll maybe try later if I get the chance.

  32. Southampton are being realistic with their 8m price tag for Hoops. It will be difficult to find a striker who has amassed an average 28 goals over the last three seasons and we have seen how foreign goal scorers can take time to find their range in the SPL. If Gary is anxious to stay and sign a new contract that should be the end of it. Hoops is no flash-in-the-pan and was doing the buis in England, the SPL and in Europe. Hope he gets his name on that new contract.
