Legia looming

847

Celtic have played four games against Polish opposition, losing to Legia Warsaw and Wisla Crakow in 2006 friendlies, drawing thanks to a very late Kenny Dalglish goal against Wislaw, before losing the return game. We’re going to need to break new ground if we’re to reach the Champions League play-off round.

As I predicted, you can ignore the 1-1 draw with St Pat’s last week, Legia are a far better team than that result suggested and it now looks like they have thrown off their summer slumber.

Time to hit form, Celtic.

I am however surprised at your comments re the post match closing of the pubs at Haymarket. What time are you talking about ? We arrived at an extremely busy Haymarket where literally thousands had gathered at the station and although boisterous there was no trouble as such. Neither did we have any problem buying a drink ( in the Platform 25 Bar ) where we stayed until leaving for our train at 10.30pm.

I was doing nothing more than pass on a piece of information that came to my attention this morning. It’s relevance to Celtic is obviously non-existent as Is , to my mind, the current disaster in Gaza. But I think it is interesting not least because with the situation in Nigeria and the kidnapping of 200 young women by zealots there will be a great deal of reaction to this story not one single thing will be done to prevent it.

For the record Canamalar I marched through Glasgow two Saturdays ago in support of Palestine – that is not in my book incompatible with condemning the disfigurement and enslavement of women in a warped take on a religion.

For a handful of otherwise compassionate and generous contributors on here though, for some reason, suggesting the condemnation of Israeli murder of women and children is somehow anti christian, anti semite, pro islamic fundamentalist.

If i was to be kind i would call it ‘warped’ thinking.

I would prefer Hamas was not tge democratically elected leadership in Gaza, i hope they stop trying to kill Israelis. But Israel have thevpower, the press, the media, the USA and the strength to end this now, negotiate, end the blockades, give back land and make peace. But they wont until the world makes them.

INPHO/Cathal NoonanHenning Berg after his side’s victory over t Pats on Tuesday

THERE’S a running joke in Poland which seems to rear its head at this time of year.

A young Polish boy asks his father: “Dad, what is the Champions League?”

His father replies: “I’m not sure, son. You should ask your uncle in Lodz.”

Eighteen years have passed since Widzew Lodz – Poland’s last Champions League representative – met Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid and Steaua Bucharest in the group stage. Any exaggeration intended when the joke was created is not so much of an exaggeration any more.

In more than 17 attempts, eight clubs have failed at the preliminary stage – and after such an absence from Europe’s top table, the Polish league has become something of an embarrassment among the country’s fans.

After lifting their 10th league title, it is again Legia Warsaw’s turn to attempt to restore pride to Polish football. Since reaching the last eight of the competition in 1995-96, they now find themselves at this stage of qualifying for the fourth time.

Having lost out to Barcelona in 2002 and Shakhtar Donetsk four years later, they finally managed to navigate their way to the play-off round last season. But despite remaining unbeaten, two goals conceded in the Polish capital saw Steaua Bucharest progress at their expense.

While the loss did not impact negatively on their domestic form, Legia struggled in the Europa League. Five losses from five games, without a goal to their name, by the time they eventually picked up a win against Cypriots Apollon Limassol, it was much too late to make a difference.

Failure in Europe had huge implications for their then coach, Jan Urban. Eighteen months into his second spell at the club, the board decided to part ways with the 51-year-old – despite having led Legia into the Polish winter break five points clear of nearest and greatest rivals Lech Poznan.

The club decided to look abroad for their new man and after some deliberation turned to the relatively inexperienced Norwegian Henning Berg.

Berg’s experience as a manager may have been slightly lacking but it was his record on the pitch which attracted the club’s president.

Having played in the Champions League for Blackburn, Manchester United and Rangers – and able to call upon advice from his former boss Sir Alex Ferguson – the 44-year-old was seen as the ideal man to lead Legia back amongst Europe’s elite.

Nick Ponty/SNS GroupHenning Berg in action for Rangers against Hearts’ Graham Weir

Some critics, including Marek Citko, Widzew’s top scorer in the 1996-97 Champions League, thought otherwise about Celtic boss Ronny Deila’s countryman.

The former Legia striker said: “Employing a coach who has not yet had the opportunity to show his style is a huge risk.

“The biggest problem is the fact Berg has no experience. A trainer who has survived several crises and failures will know how to behave and find ways to help the team.”

But worries that the appointment would destabilise Poland’s biggest club were quickly dispelled when Legia won 12 and drew two of their 16 league games, finishing 10 points ahead of Lech Poznan.

Former boss Urban had been credited for building much of the squad that lifted the title but it was Berg who took the plaudits for revitalising a team which had seemingly reached a point of stagnation.

Instilling a winning mentality to a team which had previously been on a slump, Legia began to fear no one. Rivals, in-form teams – everyone was brushed aside with ease. On the only two occasions which Legia failed to pick up a point, one was a game abandoned after crowd trouble, and another came just a day after the title was assured.

But so far this season, Legia have been a very different team.

Berg fielded a second-string line-up in the Super Cup defeat by Zawisza Bydgoszcz, but sent out stronger teams in both legs against St Patrick’s and in the league opener at home to GKS Belchatow – and performances have been disappointing.

They trailed St Pat’s for more than 80 minutes in Warsaw before midfielder-cum-striker Miroslav Radovic spared their blushes.

And in the 1-0 defeat by recently-promoted Belchatow, another uninspiring show led

some supporters and former players to call for Berg’s head.

Even a 5-0 victory in Dublin has done little to brighten some fans’ optimism, with a big league victory needed against Cracovia tomorrow before they even begin to think defeating Celtic is a possibility.

Despite their recent disappointments, the current Legia crop still represent one of the best chances of Polish Champions League representation in recent memory – and Berg noted the improvement his side showed against St Pat’s.

He said: “We are very happy with this victory because it will positively affect the entire team. We showed high quality and finally played our style. We showed what we can do.

“Now we face a good and experienced team in Celtic and these matches will be a feast for the fans. They have played in the Champions League and can afford more expensive players than we can but we intend to give everything to earn promotion to the next round”.

And if they do give it their all, Legia have the talent to get through.

In Dusan Kuciak they have one of the best keepers in Central Europe, while centre-back Jakub Rzezniczak and defensive midfielder Tomasz Jodlowiec will be key in stopping the Celtic attack. At the other end both Marek Saganowski and Arkadiusz Piech have pedigree in scoring goals.

But within Legia’s vast midfield lies their real hope of progressing. Serbian Miroslav Radovic, now on three goals for the season, is the main threat, sitting behind the strikers, allowed too much space on the ball he is able to break through defences with ease.

Youth products Michal Zyro and Jakub Kosecki are also dangerous. Both have been linked with big-money moves abroad but the club insist holding on to their stars for a Champions League push is more important than a sudden windfall.

They know Celtic pose a hugely different threat from St Pat’s. Czech frontman Ondrej Duda said: “With Celtic we must play two very good games. We also need to take advantage of the fact we play the first game at home with the fans behind us.”

After 18 years away from the Champions League, desperation is at an all-time high. But should Legia break the duck – the longest of any country which has had a team in the tournament proper – they will go down in history as the club which finally brought pride back to Polish football.
