Legia looming

847

Celtic have played four games against Polish opposition, losing to Legia Warsaw and Wisla Crakow in 2006 friendlies, drawing thanks to a very late Kenny Dalglish goal against Wislaw, before losing the return game. We’re going to need to break new ground if we’re to reach the Champions League play-off round.

As I predicted, you can ignore the 1-1 draw with St Pat’s last week, Legia are a far better team than that result suggested and it now looks like they have thrown off their summer slumber.

Time to hit form, Celtic.

I get it I’m retired, next round I will go early to Embra that’s easy for me, but to ask guys to leave at 3pm to head to Embra is sh!t, for a 45 mile journey it’s a fekin joke, Embra has to deal with it, someone has to tell them it’s not good enough and in no uncertain manner, this is a Scottish team going through to the Capitol city to represent this country with a win and should be accommodated to be suited as a home team for Scotland, alas I’m afraid this town will fall short of our visit, it’s Embra, it’s Celtic, they care not a jot about us trust me.

    Well done,Aberdeen.

Every good result for Scottish teams is a good result more than usual!

I can only assume, btw, that Groningen must have sold one of their top players this year or last, and failed to replace him(!)

“So, If Celtic get cuffed by Legia, it’ll be the mineshafters who’ll be rattled and, the hahahahappy-clapping dreamers will just wear it?

That is just a pile of, long-winded, deceitful p#sh. imho

    And, well you know it.”

Deceitful??? When you first appeared on this site, I answered all your points with evidence (not opinions) that refuted them. Not once did you ever say “Aye your right there!” or ” I got that wrong”. You merely dropped the point unacknowledged and raised another that was equally spurious. You just hopped from rock to rock as every support was knocked from under you. Therefore, only one of us is being deceitful and, I’ll give you a clue, It’s not me.

Quite clearly, the happyclappers on here have been saying we are doing well relative to our position in things. We had 8 years as a top class side (66 to 74). Since then we have been a falling giant and, very quickly thereafter, a European irrelevance. Until 2000-2014 when we became a 2nd tier European power again. Having never been past the CL last 16, we are not anywhere close to breaking into the elite. We are further away from that status than are Porto or Ajax or Monaco or Fiorentina. If I was brutally honest, I would be rating our chances of future progress, under current league conditions, as less than those of Feyenoord or Sevilla.

Happyclappers have been celebrating our relative success because we are punching above our weight and any neutral’s evaluation of our position in football.

Mineshafters have been dismissing our successes, setting unrealistic expectations, and re-inventing history to pretend that we had a meaningful European presence in the 80s, when we had players you praise.

So, yes the happyclappers will just bear it- what else can you do if you suffer a fair sporting defeat? I don’t think the mineshafters will be rattled but I do think some will see it as a vindication because it is drawn from the same false deduction you made.

Mineshafters believe that happyclappers have guaranteed us wins and succcesses., because they refuse to back our “Spend Big & Pay Big Wages” arguments.

Therefore, if we suffer a defeat, it must be the fault of the happyclapper.

It is a form of reasoning that suffers from the GIGO fault (Garbage In will produce Garbage Out). If you start with a false assumption you will reach a false conclusion.

We are where we are, a lowly Pot 4 team, with more potential to fall than rise, because of the economic limitations of our lot.

It’s time for you to hop onto another rock.

good incisive football post there, will certainly generate plenty debate

  8. So Aberdeen win 2-1 and go through plus Motherwell and St Johnstone winning 1-0. Could be a good coefficient week.

Just reading through here and had this thought

In 1996 the IRA bombed Manchester and the London docklands

Did the British encircle West Belfast and seal it off stopping it’s residents from leaving

then put artillery and tanks on the black mountain and then systematically destroy one if the most densely populated areas of Western Europe

Would people think this would be a justifiable response ?

What is happening in Gaza is murder and genocide and no other country would get away with it

Disagree with Israel and your are immediately anti-Semitic – sorry that’s not true I have no thoughts either way on someone being Jewish and if someone in my company made a comment about anyone’s religion they would never be in my company again regardless of the faith

I can empathise with the people of Gaza as I grew up in West Belfast under occupation and know what it’s like to feel the wrath of your occupiers although never on this scale – I can also understand their desire to fight no matter how hopeless it seems

I’ve lived through violence and resistance and I’ve lived through a negotiated peace and although it’s not perfect I know which I prefer

Pray for Gaza – Pray for peace

Any chance the bitter and blood thirsty political extremists can give it a rest now?

Can Celtic make signings before the Legia game?

How many tickets will Legia be given?

  13. Tony donnelly

“Your opinion, mine is get. Fecked right into them, and that was 50 years ago before Timternet , worked then, why not now, don’t read to much into it, it’s Celtic Ffs, that’s why we have a history, and NEVER forget it, in or out, we’re up for the battle.”

And on a match night, when I leave my head behind me, I wholeheartedly approve of the “get right intae them” mode. However it has its limitations as the Partisan Belgrade game showed.

As for working 50 years ago, you are nearly right. 50 years ago takes us back to 1964 when we finished 3rd in the league and dropped to 8th the following year. There were no signs that we were near the sphere occupied by Real, Benfica, Inter and AC. Yet 2 short years later we had by passed all of those and stayed competitive in their company until 1974. We worked for 8 years as a European power. We were an irrelevance from 75 to 2000 apart from a near miss in 1980.

So, it has not really been a successful strategy over the piece. We are now in the post-Bosman, post-CL re-structuring, post TV money distortion of the big 5 leagues. We cannot repeat our 60s feat because, if we did, we would lose Gemmell, Murdoch, Johnstone and Lennox to the big money teams in 1968. In those days we could compete with most teams to attract the best of rival Scottish talent to replace them for modest fees and wages. Nowadays, there are few you would want to buy and, to get them, you need to top the stupid inflated fees of English clubs.

We are in a handicap race where the regular winners get the weight allowance and the rest of us get jockeys that cannot make the weight set.

We are no different in our opinion that Celtic are likely to beat Legia. We just differ on how short or long are the odds we would offer for it.

Not long ago, there was much weeping and gnashing of dentures when Celtic hosted two Cup Finals.

Now, Celtic are in line to host two Internationals and not a cheep of protest, unless I have missed it.

  21. I think most of us who have commented critically against Israel’s actions in Gaza are motivated to stop the bloodshed and are far from bloodthirsty. I accept this is a football blog and normally I prefer when it sticks to football. However when I watch YouTube videos of grieving mothers cradling murdered infants, I just can’t stay silent. As a person from a race that was oppressed for centuries it behoves me to stand against oppression. Its just a little thing but I am boycotting all Israeli goods and would urge others to do likewise. I am signing off now for the night as I am in quite an emotional state and would be easy meat for a troll.

    I’m offended that your offended

  23. Signings…..

As I see it, there is a very thin slice of the football fraternity that we can hope to sign.

These are the players who we think are good enough to help us improve BUT have not yet been scouted/talked to by anyone in england.

If we approach a player and his agent already thinks there MIGHT be a chance of an offer from fulham/hull/sunderland/stoke/westham etc……

Then he won’t let his player sign for us…..until the last day of the window when he realizes england isn’t going to happen this year.

The players we CAN sign right now, are the ones whose agents know england isn’t going to happen for them. Quite likely, these could be the players that we don’t think are good enough.

And once we do sign these players, it doesn’t take long for them to figure out that after a year or two with us, they can triple their money at southampton or somewhere. As such, they won’t be extending their contracts with us.

That is why Victor went, and why FF and Virgil will go. Even Efe has been quoted as saying he will wind down his contract with us.

Honestly, I’d rather give youth a try than throw money at bangura. And wait and hope that a Ledley or a Johansson or a Victor comes along.

Or, I guess we could just howl on about Peter L’s ‘bonus’.

    Just my 200 bucks worth…..:)
