Little surprise in Ledley moving on

287

I remember the early days of Joe Ledley’s time at Celtic, in particular for defending him with pleas to ‘give him time to settle’.  He did settle into an accomplished midfield player but there should be no surprise he is moving on now.

Joe has managed his career well.  He allowed his Cardiff City contract to expire, making himself available without a transfer fee.  Celtic snapped him up but the leverage the player had, without a contract, was compensated by a top contract.

Is he worth a top contract?  Is he worth pushing the boat out, beyond the current top contract level?  Yes to the first question, perhaps, but no to the second, he sat on the bench when Wanyama and Brown occupied central mid in last season’s Champions League.  Celtic put a contract to him but would have known there was a high possibility it would be rejected, as the player would be able to negotiate a contract in the ever-inflating English Premier League.

If his deal goes through at Crystal Palace he’ll leave with my best wishes, both parties probably made the best decision for their own futures.

  1. As much as Sky are trying to hype up this transfer window, its actually pretty dull.

Can’t be long until Jim White starts hyperventilating over rumours that they make up themselves to try to keep people interested until 11pm.

  2. KoJo my old friend, how are you, well I hope.

Anyway this guy Bacon is know by two other names, Rasheed and ‘Amhed is he not.

  3. How come despite JL undoubted value to the squad, Celtic take the opportunity to get circa £700,000 and a high earner off the wage bill as we are not made of money and need to do those deals to keep going.

Yet Sevco Rangers can turn down a similar deal.

    Interesting.

Not read back so I’m not sure if Joe is still currently a Celtic player or not.

    Is he?

A top hun skelper who helped heap misery on the hun back in 2011 with that headed goal. Was that the game that saw us overtake the orcs in the league? Cant remember, but it sure shut up their horrible supporters with their wee bits of red tin foil etc that night.

Good luck to the young fella whatever he chooses to do.

As for other members of the squad, there has been no direct contact from any club with regards to Georgios Samaras, while Mo Bangura has been allowed to leave the club. And rumours of interest in Efe Ambrose are just that.

“It wouldn’t surprise me but there’s been no contact and he’s not for sale,” said the manager.

Anthony Stokes returns to the Celtic squad following his two-game suspension, and if his move to Celtic is completed today, Leigh Griffiths will join the Irishman in the squad for the game against St Mirren on Sunday.q

NL: Not surprised about speculation on Efe Ambrose because of his quality but there’s been no contact from any club & he’s not for sale.

  11. Will we all still be wishing Joe good luck if he sits out the rest of his contract?.If this is the case,he should sit out the rest of the season. Its looking likely. No sign of him in London.

Sorry I got distracted by work there (the cheek of it). His total salary is £1M including bonus which frankly I think is far too high given the club’s position on the Living Wage.

So I totally agree with you’re sentiment but I’m always going to question somebody if I think they’re being factually inaccurate, and you stated his bonus was £1M. It’s not.

  27. Giorgios Samaras is the subject of a deadline day move from Ligue 1 side Marseille. Le10 claim on Friday afternoon that the striker is being eyed by the French club as option to strengthen their squad for the rest of the season.

Transfer speculation has surrounded Samaras for some time and just this week Neil Lennon had to say the player was in the right frame of mind despite reports, quoted by the Daily Record he said “I’m happy with his frame of mind.

“We’ve been talking to his representatives and he’s in a good place so I will have no hesitation in playing him. I don’t know if he’ll be here next week, though, is the honest answer. I really don’t know.”

Samaras has a contract which lasts until the end of the current season and Celtic face the prospect of losing him for free in the summer, he could sign a pre contract agreement now with a club of his choice.. Marseille would like to get a deal concluded but Le10 say they are aware it will prove difficult given the lack of time left in the window.

Marseille are also linked with a move for Jérémie Aliadière, but QPR are interested in him too.
