Magic money, Longmuir, Ahmad

BDO’s survey of British football clubs suggests control, if not complete sanity, has descended on Scottish football.  Most Premiership clubs surveyed predicted they would return to profitability over the next year.

On the back of Phil Mac Giolla Bhain’s article on former Scottish Football League chief exec David Longmuir’s bonuses, which are no longer payable, these are heady days for some clubs who have lived hand-to-mouth stuffing pork into Longmuir’s trough.  You better believe it’s financial Armageddon, for the former SFL man. The SFA will surely insist on inappropriate financial stain is left on our game.

Anyway………. It seems if I explain the structural gap between Rangers International’s earnings through season ticket sales and the costs of operating a football club which can facilitate circa 40,000 spectators on a regular basis, we can all figure why the gap cannot be bridged.  We are different because despite having enormously higher football costs, we can access enormously higher revenue streams.

On the other hand, explaining that Celtic’s operational costs need to be augmented by player sales and/or Champions League income, just to break even, and that player sales and/or Champions League income cannot exclusively be used for player purchases, amounts to a heresy against deeply held orthodox views.

Add in a reminder about the strategy which has made all the difference to Celtic – buying wisely, selling wisely, and sit back to watch a secular belief structure ignore the ‘every penny to be spent’ prediction and vent as though their deity has just been denied.

This stuff’s complicated, apparently, but paying attention to financial detail is not a required Obligation to support Celtic, so if it doesn’t float your boat, I’d start by demanding to know where all the Seville money went to….

I hear the Daily Record accompanied their – Imran Ahmad to sue Rangers International for £3.4m – story with a completely baseless story about Celtic losing out on the only transfer target they know about.  They were wrong on some of the Ahmad story (Charles Green may have produced the documents Ahmad would rely on in court, but suggestions they are in concert on this claim are wildly inappropriate).  Still, it plays into current orthodoxy on Charles Green.

Going on what they’ve written, they know nothing about Celtic’s transfer negotiations either.  Absolutely squat.  Percentage of Celtic fans who know the media’s game: 100%.  Percentage of Celtic fans who allow themselves to be influenced despite knowing the above……?

If these people have you panicking, look elsewhere for sympathy.  We have a team building strategy, it has delivered well thus far and it will continue to do so.  Buy wisely, sell wisely, spend every penny over a given business cycle.  Pretty straightforward, really.

  1. “i`d prefer a proven CB pairing going into the most important game of the season”

We have Ambrose, Mulgrew, Mouyokolo & Lustig (Played well at CB against Benfica)

And you know what, sometimes you need to give players a chance to prove themselves in big games.

I’m not really sure what you are looking for a “proven”. Do you mean proven at Kazakh national level? Or CL level?

How many Celtic players have Celtic shifted off the books this close season, how many have they been replaced with?

All the players, every single one of them, that has been brought in has done nothing yet to justify being accolade a ‘First team’ pick.

I’ve seen so many players come to Celtic and get hyped to the heavens and beyond on here only to fizzle and fade and exit stage left, very quietly, and with no fanfare, and with none of their trumpeters trumpeting either.

  3. Replacements is it?

Well, I think hamiltontim needs replacing urgently!

    The question is, by whom?

And no, it won’t be me, you can’t afford me :-))

Very well put. We all want Celtic to win everything we enter. But it’s not realistic to think that can happen. The current economic environment in European football is not good for us. We are doing pretty well under the circumstances.

I don’t think we can expect to be in the CL knockout rounds (or even group stage) EVERY season. It is a very high standard. In the last two seasons Chelsea, Man Utd and Man City (twice) have failed to get through to the knockout stage. Think of their budgets compared to ours. I really think we over-achieved last season. Even getting into the group stage takes a bit of doing.

That’s not to say we CAN’T do it – just that we shouldn’t expect it.

    Ok I’m a happy shafter :-)

I agree entirely with your post. The players we’ve sold weren’t dummies, and that doesn’t include some of the dummies that we have actually got off the wage bill this summer.

We’ve lost 3 of our most influential players and from what I can see we haven’t found suitable replacements for any of them.

Having watched the second leg away to Effborg I’m greatly concerned about the next round. I hope to God I’m wrong.

LIVERPOOL have just sold downing for 5 million thats a loss of 15 million not including wages, over 91 games thats roughly 165,000 quid a game without wages probably well over 200,000 quid a game ,and won hee haw ,totally opposite of our model, will it all change under the new financial rules or will uefa just ignore the over spending like they have with real madrid

  8. If we do sell big Fraser, can we get Hope Solo in as a replacement? Established international, and probably within our budget.

Excellent… that means we can see who we havent signed even quicker! :)

I don’t believe that a holding midfield player is essential, we have a few who could fill that role, though not as well as Wanyama.

A prolific goalscorer is imperative in my view. We haven’t found a replacement for Hooper.

  12. A Stor Mo Chroi on

Do you know what really beats me, when we try to set the bar to glory Celtic, we have this inane tendency to bring Rangers into the equation.

  13. A Stor Mo Chroi

Undoubtedly Van Dijk was bought as first choice, just a pity he was injured in his first game. Right sided centre half, back up would be Lustig for me, Ambrose after this.

I have said before Charlie Mulgrew POTY at left sided centre half, his best position in my opinion.

Mouyokolo looked good against Liverpool also, so centre half, in my opinion, is less of an issue than centre forward. Problem is at the moment no game time together because of injuries.

Lenny has consistently said he will buy a new striker so why don’t we believe him?

  15. Someone posted earlier today about Jackson Irvine having signed for Kilmarnock on loan. Could someone point me in the direction of an (official) announcement of this? Last I read was that this was being considerd last week but Neil Lennon said at the weekend that this was now being re-considered.

“I think we already purchased the replacement for Wilson, unfortunately he s crocked – can’t blame a cautious spending policy for that.”

Well it’s true in Virgil’s case but we got both Derk and Mouyoloko cheap because they were crocked, so fingers crossed eh!

    you deliberately distort my comment

Wilson wasn`t brilliant …however he was settled in the team football wise ….he must have been the best we have otherwise Lenny wouldn`t have played him against Elfsborg

    re the purchase of strikers

i`m sure Lenny would like much more than £2m to spend on a striker …he is being forced to find value all the time …that`s the boards policy not his

please tell me what hand the board had in improving VW and GH to such an extent that such large transfer fees were obtained ?

    RobinBhoy:

It is not a question of who do we believe or not. To date none of those bought by Celtic in this window have done anything to justify the status of first team picks. None of us, none of us know what any of them are really like. So my question stands – who is Celtic’s centre-half, who is Celtic’s centre-forward?

I have been Supporting Celtic for fifty years and I can’t answer my own question. Lucky we don’t have any priority games coming up.

    hi Paul67,

what do you think about the clubs cooperation with the very same media, particularly considering the MSM “head in the sand” approach to the many, many sevco issues that you have highlighted on this fine site?

Do you feel that the club are allowing themselves in any way to be a part of the medias game, since the club show the media cooperation, and the club could be accused of adopting of adopting the same “head in the sand” attitude that the we all criticise the media for?

Incidentally, thanks for allowing us low down mine shafters a voice that others Celtic fans would deny us and for

  23. “We’ve lost 3 of our most influential players and from what I can see we haven’t found suitable replacements for any of them.”

We have signed 2 CB’s and let 2 go (injury prone Rogne included)

Midfield has always been an area we have always had plenty of options and I suppose the hope is that either Ambrose or Kayal will step up this season and we still have Broony and Joe.

Striker is the obvious pressing issue. Miku & Lassad dumped, Stokes on his last legs at the club and a prolific striker offski as well. Sammy isn’t prolific enough to step up and Balde is obviously a work in progress. This is an area we obviously need to sort out but unfortunately we normally get priced out (Rhodes, Austin and now the Iceman)

Lennon wants a striker and we will sign at least one before the window closes
