Managerial appointments

725

Middlesbrough finished a point off the play-offs in the English Championship last season, which was not enough to save manager, Tony Pulis, from the sack.  Pulis is an experienced hand with teams fighting relegation from the Premiership or looking for promotion to it, having worked at Stoke, Crystal Palace and West Brom.

A month after the sacking, Middlesbrough gave rookie, Jonathan Woodgate, the job, with former Celtic striker, Robbie Keane his assistant.

Football teams have a tendency to overcompensate for their last perceived mistakes when appointing a manager.  Pulis was taken from a regular, if uninspiring, stock.  They have not made that ‘mistake’ with Woodgate.

The former Real Madrid defender will bring colour and excitement to the Riverside, at least in the short-term, but his chances of out-performing Pulis next season are open to debate.  Middlesbrough have the resources to attract managerial talent from most leagues in Europe or South America.  While these territories have worked well for others seeking improvement in England, there are significant risks.

Like Sunderland, who appointed St Mirren manager, Jack Ross, a year ago, they could have looked to less-risky Scotland, but can you name an appropriate candidate who would be up for this one?

Appointing a rookie is a big roll of the dice, to be avoided if possible.  But anyone who tells you appointing a sure-fire success is easy doesn’t know what he’s talking about.  All you can hope to do is avoid sure-fire failures.

  1. I think Ntcham flatters to deceive and his passing is rank.

If we can get a few bob for him…………..get rid!

    ASAP.

  2. !!Bada Bing!! on

Ntcham playing for France U21s in European Championships, which could be a help, fee wise

Philbhoy…N’Cham has the ability, what is questionable is his attitude since his big mucker left…

  4. What is the Stars on

I like Ntcham and would be sorry to see him go…

But heated driveways and dont pay for themselves

  5. Having agreed a deal that would make a talented Scottish teenager a millionaire……….would it really be the right thing to be brittle, torn-faced and vindictive in the face of some basic negotiating hoopla?

If the issue is with the kid, fair enough………but, if its a recoverable situation with a gung-ho brief with an eye for the headlines……..let’s be the better party and secure a player well-regarded.

Can BR go snd do to Leicester, what Moyes did at Everton ; time will tell. Personally, I don’t think there’s a hance in hell.

  8. Since Martin O’Neil, we’ve had our fair share of players who could peak to a very high level, but maybe not with the consistency that would have had them in a ‘bigger’ league e.g. Petta and Agathe.

Ntcham falls into that category but he’s nowhere near consistent enough. I’m pretty sure if we get a significant offer, he’ll be off.

‘A coughball of laughter lept from his throat dragging after it a rattling chain of phlegm’

    Happy Bloom’s day y’all.

  10. When did we last get a full game out of Ntcham?

    His passing is awful.

Watch the cup final against the mini’s when he came on.

    No for me.

  11. Go tell the Spartim on

It’s amazing what different supporters see

    Confirmation bias one oh one

  12. N’cham has all the ability in the world, but the heart of a fly… his pal Moussa left and he (in my opinion) chucked it

I wish the bhoy well and hope he has a great tournament for the French … Moussa was signed for Lyon not due scoring for us, it was scoring for the French u-21s

I still hope we get David Turnbull

I agree ncham’s attitude is shocking in most games he played last season, and his stats would be worth a look at

BMCUWP came up with one of the best lines ever… put 10 Celtic fans in a pub and you will get 11 different opinions :-)

    Yes …

I would put young Euan out to Well and see if playing week in week out he can do the same …

Playing for “us” with the pressure from the stands can knock better players than Euan…

    We have enough scapegoats :-)

Gftb-I don’t know myself, haven’t seen enough of turnbull, but Henderson is already here and will have grown up with the pressure of playing for Celtic

  17. Imo, Ntcham has tremendous ability. Look at the pass he gave to Kieran Tierney to set up Leigh Griffiths for that so important goal against Anderlecht. He may want to go, because of his life off the park but, if we can get him to settle, we have a very good player on the books already.

Again imo, Euan Henderson is already a far better player than Turnbull. We have a surfeit of midfielders. We need to get our priorities right: a right back, centre back and centre forward are MUSTS. Cover for left back should be next. Then we can think about the likes of the Turnbulls for this world. Not before, please, Celtic.

Sometimes growing up within Celtic is a hinderance, for every KT you might have an Andrew Robertson… playing games is key… and young Turnbull fits the bill (in my opinion )

Am only going on Sportscene and by all accounts Neil was well (pardon the pun) impressed when playing against Hibs u-20s… Stephen Craigan has been bumping his gums about Turnbull for the last year, well (pardon the pun) before his 15 goals from midfield with a bottom six team

  19. fairhill bhoy on

Parkheadcumsalford-that was one pass, compared to how many that didn’t make it.No doubt he is classy player but most times he flatters to deceive.

I think we should be giving Henderson a chance before Turnbull absolutely.

We are going to need a left back, not cover for one

  20. fairhill bhoy on

Gftb-I’m not saying he isn’t a good young prospect but so is Henderson and we have him already .

Incidentally I wouldn’t have a problem you getting my email from Paul or BMCUWP,to continue our talks this morning. Not to happy at someone only giving you the one side.Totaly up to you

    It’s history mate …

Sometimes I could argue with my own shadow … online … we move on

I can assure you there is no problem at this end

I prefer posting about the fitba … loved the CQN article when MacAvennie was taking about big Billy, during the Jenny Bltyh years … everybody thought Macca was fined every Monday … but big Billy would say on a Thursday play well and you can forget the fine :-)

By all means get my email (fae BMCUWP) but no grief this end whatsoever

  22. Stivs

Bottom right Southern Necropolis ,hutchesontown high flats built around 62 ? can’t be long after that.

  23. Stivs………..

I usually only stay 2pm-7pm… 5hrs of my company is probably too much for anybody

I met Marspapa at the last and he was a total gent and did not have a bad word to say about you …

    GFTB

It’s all about opinions or else it would’ve dull

Haven’t noticed turnbull in any games but given his age and young Henderson’s we might just be looking at succession management esp as \o/ at the tail end of his career
