McCoist quite right to hold firm line

980

In terms of pure logic, Ally McCoist was quite right to insist, “I can also assure every Rangers fan I will not be accepting any talk of stripping the club of titles. That is something we will never accept and everyone at the club shares this view.”

It is outrageous to put Sevco in the position of accepting Rangers are stripped of previous league titles while due process has not been carried out.  The very fact that the SFA and SPL are negotiating with Sevco over this matter is reason enough for McCoist to issue a firm rebuttal.  Quite simply, if the authorities are prepared to negotiate, their offer should be rejected until the last moment possible, at which point they will be meekly accepted.

The SFA and SPL must allow due process to take place and remove any need for Sevco to rubber-stamp a judgement on Rangers.  It is wholly inappropriate to discuss or agree the consequences of a guilty verdict, or subsequent punishments (losing titles won illegally is not a punishment), until a verdict is recorded.

Due process, please, nothing more and nothing less.  If Rangers didn’t illegally register players for over a decade neither they nor Sevco have anything to worry about.

Last nights result and performance was embarrasing to say the least. After the Braga, Ultretch, and Sion results we were told we had learned our lessons. We will probably get the same comments again after last night.. How many times are we going to be taught the same lesson before the penny drops. I am really concerned about our European chances. Once again Neil Lennon says he was to blame as he got the tactics wrong.. For me its simple, when playing good teams from Europe you have to be solid from the back first and foremost ,and give nothing away and build from that. An experienced mentor is required to guide Lenny in Europe and save the experimenting for the SPL. Like all Celtic fans i am gutted whenever we loose whether it be in a friendly match or a competitive game. I hope i am wrong and we do make the Champions league.

Cypriot team did not have the challenges of restrictions on imported talent that Scotland has…..ie like Holland, Belgium and Portugal they can cast their net wider for talent. Look at their squad make up…

I also recall many of the ‘supporters’ or maybe consumers of our club were loudly engaging in their ‘right to demand better’ at the very time when we did reach the last 16 under GS anyway……Many of the same who seem to feel the best way to have a go at anyone in authority at the club…..

Cypriots show how money does not guarantee success but many on here seem to prefer the kind of financial strategy pursued by our rivals for the past 20 years it seems….It is crazy to assume we can buy players effectively as an SPL team at this time of the window….there arent too many players or agents lining up to target SPL as their destination unfortunately….

For me the next 10 days are key for our club to align and unite to kick start our efforts to achieve the biggest success of the season and reach the CL group stages….

the_huddle : no offence taken mate, but the Cypriots are not the only ones who have had better bang for buck than us. Scores of clubs with a fraction of our turnover continue to build good European reputations, while we toil. Why is that?

I’ve kept my season card since we moved back from Hampden, but domestic success is not enough for me. We should be capable of so much more!

Some of our fans were just happy to beat THEM and win trophies, but they are gone now. So where should we aim our ambitions?

It will take a lot of hard work, but we can re-establish our credentials in Europe. To my mind, it’s vital that we can show we could be part of a re-organised European football structure because change will come.

Well, he did pepper the rant with things that old people do – like suddenly finding a leaf really interesting and staring at it for about 5 minutes, but i have been known to do that myself, so hey ho.

One thing he said to me was “when we were in the doldrums in the 40s there was one man who carried the team, and that was Jimmy Delaney”.

I know the name, but little else, so i will be digging the KDS archive to find out more.

How many times have you turned off a Celtic performance that did not involve the huns ?

Do you expect us to qualify for European football ?

I dont think we are anywhere near good enough. If Ajax second team can do that to us pre season I dont fancy our chances against Helsinki … they are well fit , well prepared .. win the league the last two years and won the double last season.

But I am going to take SFTB´s advice and ignore these pre season frendlies that Celtic are made to play in advertise and take money for .. which is a shame as quite often they have a charitable connotation.

Personally yesterday was one charitable act too much for me. Never again.

I just came over to Cyprus because my big daft nephew decided to get married here – I actually live in Oslo. But from what i have heard here Cypriot football isn’t a joke anymore, their standards have shot up. Didn’t APOEL Nicosia do well in the CL last time? Last 16 i think.

Burnley78 – you do realise how many foreigners are in our current first team squad? That’s a poor excuse! It was valid in the case of the Porto team who beat us in Seville and then added some South Americans before winning the following year’s CL final.

I didn’t ask the Cypriot questions so that you could take the opportunity to hit your usual targets, i.e. the WGS haters!

I love the wee man and as you and others predicted, time would show that he did a great job, but that still doesn’t answer my main point. Why do we get such poor value for the huge amount of money we invest in our club?

I see auld Keevins was using only the football “wisdoms” that suit his purpose.

“A game of 2 halves etc”

He then goes on to say Celtic lost the title v Motherwell in 2005, but at Shug’s age he is likely to forget the other more realistic wisdom that a title is won over a season and had Rangers signed players of lesser quality because they could afford to pay the tax due rather than channel that tax avoided to pay for players they could not afford, (i.e double whammy) then Scott McDonald.s goals would have been irrelevant.

This was not using debt to field better players, this was using tax payers money as an unauthorised subsidy, tax they have continued to avoid paying to this day.

And now they argue they are entitled to keep the proceeds of that theft whilst arguing they should be allowed back in to where they conducted the act, to do what? Repeat the exercise?

The sheer lack of morality is the most concerning aspect of this unfolding debacle, a world gone to hell in a money basket.

No minnow team has done it consistently, Rosenburg are probably the only team that has done it and look at them now.

We can’t compete in Europe, spend £5, 10 , 20 mill and we can still go out before the group stages, we are the minnows, some fans need to accept that.

WGS did wonders and was then criticised, shame on them.

    Tommy,

I must totally agree that we have to look further than winning the SPL, we will learn nothing from winning the league every year in Scotland. Progress in Europe is the way forward and as much as i want Neil Lennon to do well, i cannot see that happening unless he gets some evperienced help alongside him. To try new tactics against quality opposition like Ajax is suicide.

This week with the ould fella has been an education. We were sitting having a bite to eat a couple of days ago, with radio 4 puttering away in the background.

This documentary about George Best came on, during which the commentator said: “…the greatest-ever footballing export from Belfast and Northern Ireland…..”

The ould one seemed perturbed by this, and finally put the knife and fork down, and said: “i think anybody who ever saw Charlie Tully play would have a thing or two to say about that.”
