Midweek change for Celtic

Busy article today, watch out for notes at the bottom on:

Magners ticket competition for 27 December
Mary’s Meals Malawi school kitchen appeal
CQN Annual, final few posting days before…..
CQN Christmas Raffle – winners have been drawn

One of the resources Ronny Deila has been short of since taking over is training days.  Players have stamina, fitness and speed training work to do every week, while there’s rest time before and after games, so time to work on technical aspects are a premium.

Believe it or not, this is the first midweek Celtic haven’t had a game, or players away on international duty, since the second week of July.  The manager has spoken of how difficult it has been to carry out the extensive tactical changes he has introduced spending only stolen minutes working on them.  The January break will give him another opportunity to spend hours with the players on tactical work.

Apparently newco are keeping McCoist as some kind of blubber human shield for Monday’s AGM!  Nice one.  There’s nothing degrading about that, very classy in fact.  Really disappointed for Ally, I’m sure he could almost taste the £400k he’s counting on – to go quietly.  Let’s hope he puts on a show on Monday and they sort him out thereafter.

It’s almost worth buying a newco share to get along on Monday.  Almost.

It’s been a while since I’ve paid any attention to the man who’s apparently lined-up to replace McCoist next week, Billy Davies.  After his interesting second stint at Nottingham Forest ended earlier this year, The Guardian wrote:

“[Davies] has paid the price for failing to control a personality which latterly seemed to have crossed the border into downright paranoia.

“[He] could never quite escape his self-destructive insecurities.”

It’s not often you read a national newspaper liberally speculating on the mental health, or lack thereof, of an individual.

Failing to control his personality, downright paranoia, self-destructive insecurities!  He’s perfect.  Is there a job in the land this guy is more suited for than newco’s manager?

Our pals at Magners have kindly offered a pair of premium seat tickets to the Jock Stein Stand at the home game on 27 December in support of our Mary’s Meals appeal.  You can win the tickets by email me at celticquicknews@gmail.com the answer to the question:

Who do Celtic play on 27 December?

Competition closes at 22:00 tonight (Thursday) so get your entry in.

If you’re entering the competition please consider donating £1 to Mary’s Meals here, where we are hoping to build a kitchen at a school in Chibwata, Dowa, Malawi, for their 909 children.

I’d a look at John Guidetti’s interview with Magners this week, he looks like he’s enjoying himself……..

We’ve drawn the CQN Christmas Raffle, winner of the Special Whisky and CQN Package is ticket number 976, from a lucky reader based in Lythm, we’ll be in touch.

The four runners up all win CQN Packages with ticket numbers 1072, 974, 1190 and 1051, check your tickets, we’ll be in touch soon.

Still time to order your 2015 CQN Annual for Christmas.

You can also order the CQN Annual and DVD bundle here. It’s a great offer, check it out – oh, and there’s tons of photos, fresh stories and comment on the first time Inter faced the green and white hoops.

  1. Well if we still hire our first team bus from PARKS of Hamilton, says it all really about our board, i have said a few times on here, a big club like ours should have our own transport. even sevco being supposed to be skint ,have there own bus, no i think time is up for a lot of them on the Celtic Board, the bus thing is the one of many things that is wrong at our club.

I do not know whether he believes that or not but do you really expect him to say that he wanted them dead and to have the decency to stay dead? What is it that Celtic are supposed to do to kill them. We cannot do anything more than what we did which was to beat them on the park by living within our means whilst they bankrupted themselves trying to outdo us.

Celtic voted against the idea of allowing Sevco into the SPL directly. What happened afterwards was outside Celtic’s control as we were not a SFL club and had no vote in their affairs. The only SPL team to support Sevco was Kilmarnock, who abstained, not Celtic. What have we done to actively help Sevco?

When Peter Lawwell derided the fiction of them being the same club he was criticised by many on here for being smug and condescending. He pointed out the financial realities of their demise, £10m shortfall in revenue, he did not say that we were in the business of facilitating their entry into the SPFL top division. Celtic are one club in, I believe, forty two, we are not an all powerful force in the structures that govern football in Scotland. Witness the Tonev decision.

There are many things Celtic could do better but they are not the baddies too many on here try to portray them as.

  3. Another point on Joe Miller – he was asked by Souness if he would go there. He told him where to go. He could have gone to Manchester United but he went to Celtic instead.

  4. Auldheid

Oh I’m not naive in the slightest. His words are clear and the language used extremely emotive.

We clearly read their intent differently, I’m happy with my own analysis.

  5. We cannot and should not criticise Joe Miller (or any ex-Celt) for

saying that they miss matches against a Powerful Rangers side

    Not stridently criticising Rangers

For speaking as a fan off hte street when they are asked to play radio pundits.

Believing a strong Rangers is good for Celtic and Scottish fitba

We can and should criticise Joe Miller (and other ex-Celts)

for failing to mention how Rangers got themselves into dead trouble

for believing that they can “return” or arrive in the SPL as serious contenders

for failing to appreciate the magnitude of hteir financial problems and where that leaves them as a team

For hinting that we need to restructure to get them “back” if they are not able to get there on merit.

It isn’t a hanging offence but it is disappointing to hear some of the things that Joe actually said.

  6. “never meet your hero”s”

    Bgx

    Exactly.

I couldn’t even bring myself to watch oor jamesgang on the news :)

  7. Owen

I’m not talking about Celtic ‘killing them’ as you say mate.

I’m merely giving my opinion on DD’s words.

The language is very strong and completely unnecessary unless he was expressing his own beliefs.

And just to defend Joe Miller, I heard him speak on SSB tonight, I never heard his “soup taking comments” but I did hear him talk about the work that he is doing in various community’s predominantly deprived areas. Working with youth teams and trying to get ex ( Celtic ) players to give up their free time and help coach the kids. One of the callers had also asked him to take part in a charity match and details were exchanged.

Also, as mentioned earlier, I think he helped out at the recent Greenock function, when someone who has been lauded on here, didnae bother to show!!

  9. Geordie munro…..i met Mo Johnstone a number of times when he was with us. What a player….bigger ass****…

  10. Hamilton Tim

Do you take every man at his word?

As I said you do not strike me as being naive.

Is it that his word reinforces your perception?

We all look for reinforcement of our views because a changing them is uncomfortable.

Welcome the discomfort. Say hello to doubt. Wave goodbye to certainty. It opens the door to thinking different.

  11. Timbhoy2,

The huns have one of the worst coaches in world football and don’t you forget it.

  12. Owen

G would be more inclined to cuddle me to death :-)

It’s nice to be able to disagree on here without it getting personal or abusive.

  13. pedrocaravanachio67 on

When’s Lenny gonnae start gettin it in the neck for enquiring about Templeton, funding the Huns !!!!

A bus ffs….heard it all now.

  14. SFTB

It’s not just Joe who is guilty of falling to make those points.

I do wonder if it’s part of a footballers mindset to disregard matters of an ethical nature because it gets in the way of winning a game.

  15. Dermot Desmond is a multi billionaire and I have no doubts that he is prepared to hold two, or more, conflicting opinions at any one time as long as it either doesn’t lose him money or it makes him more money. Telling some journalist what they want to hear so that they go away and allowing to get on with his golf is not outside the bounds of possibility. Now what he says in the boardroom is a different matter and is likely to have been considered, investigated and even costed by his advisors.

I am not trying to canonise the guy but he is also not the devil incarnate either.

  16. Auldheid

As I’ve said my own analysis is that he used particular vocabulary, the reason being, the words expressed his true feelings.

It’s interesting that the comments of ex Celts such as Joe Miller are being discussed tonight.

I’ve now heard several ex and current players express opinions not too dissimilar to those voiced by DD.

What’s your opinion on their comments?

  17. Just watched the John Hartson documentary on BBC Alba.

Huge respect to the honesty and strength of the man.

  18. pedrocaravanachio67 on

    Bgx

He’s a clever man and media savvy, maybe he could have deflected the question and spoke about golf or the Scottish weather….I do believe he was playing in the Alfred Dunhill cup at the time.

  19. The Spirit of Arthur Lee

I canny mind exactly, we stayed off the beaten track and there was one up there, I was a wee crate digger even early on!

Blackpool was a cracking place for us Shire Bhoys!

  20. Jamesgang,

I’m serious. I’ll just keep the big Gerrard Butler in the hoops running about paradise image in my heid :)

    Right. Maffit.

Wee shower and a couply episodes of woody and Mathew.

    Ktf troops.

  21. Pedrocaravanschio67…i dunno mate…maybe he believes that…maybe he wanted rid of the guy.maybe he was being politic..only DD knows the answer…my guess…all of the above….

    Winning Captains 2126-

I never heard Joe Miller make the comments as I do not listen to SSB – it does my head in. I despair at that show and the idiotic comments aired by the pundits and panel. But a number of different people have told me about the comments so it seems that he did make them. My post says if he did make those comments I would be disappointed. It was measured and not a rant.

My post was not an attack on Joe for the sake of it, I made it clear I was disappointed that he of all people would make such comments – I said this as I am aware of the work that he does for ex-Celtic players, work that I understand he does in his own time. I have met him before and spoke with him before and thought better of him than to be an excuser of Rangers` misdemeanours.

The party line on this site is that Rangers FC are nasty cheats that have wrongfully deprived Celtic of trophies through tax dodging and currying favours with the SFA. I don`t disagree with that.

However, the people who have suffered most through this process are those Celtic fans such as me who spent good money – money that to be fair we could have put to other uses – to watch games of football over many years that were bent. We see very little action at any speed – see Resolution 12 and its glacial progress – by our club to address this cheating while the new Rangers entity is sticking two fingers up at Scottish football (see the statement issued re Telfer or Ashley`s clear influence, much against the supposed rules which are ignored or applied at will – look at the cavalier attitude towards enforcement of the £250,000 fine from Sevco).

This site is probably more pro-Celtic PLC than any other Celtic site on the internet. This site decries the mainstream sports media in Scotland and bemoans lazy journalism. When it adopts such positions do not be surprised when people question the use of ex-Celtic players who use that same mainstream media – so despised on this site – to bum up Rangers, deny or trivialise their cheating, or proclaim “We need a strong Rangers”, to sell books.

Its not a rant or a dig, just an observation that there is a bit of inconsistency afoot.

  23. BGI

I like to think I’m thought provoking.

I constantly watch what I think and why and question the certainty of it.

Of one thing I am as certain as I can be based on evidence, we are up against a mindset that does not understand the concept of cheating – only what it can get away with.

We need to make that as difficult as possible to discourage it.

  24. Hamiltontim

You are right, too often discussions on here descend into a slanging match because some cannot accept someone else having an opposing, but sincerely held, viewpoint without resorting to insults.
