Mind the Kayal Gap

Neil Lennon, his goalkeeper and defenders will not be too concerned at the loss of their first goal in domestic football yesterday since Noah was a boy.  John Rankin’s pot-shot from 20-odd yards clipped the post on its way in but the Dundee United player scored from an area of the field that is usually vigorously monitored by Beram Kayal.

We’re going to miss that guy……

My wife has a close friend called Mary. Mary is Irish, from Donegal, and has lived in Adelaide for over 25 years with her husband Ian, who originates from Perth, Scotland. Ian is a Rangers follower, which pretty much makes Mary a Rangers follower, to an extent.

Ian and Mary have just returned from spending Christmas and the New Year in Scotland, visiting family and friends. Ian’s brother got him 2 tickets for Rangers v Motherwell. He took his wife for her first visit to Ibrox. They were in the club deck and were impressed with the view.

At half-time, they went downstairs for a drink and a snack. Before returning to their seats, Mary decided she needed to use the ladies powder room. Ian stood outside the door waiting for her. After a few seconds, she emerged rather sheepishly and told her husband there was a problem – there was no toilet paper of any description, and she refused to avail herself of the facilities under such circumstances. Ian found a steward and explained the situation. The steward spoke into his intercom and assured them that someone would be along shortly.

About two minutes later, an “elderly man in some sort of security uniform” arrived and presented Mary with a roll of toilet paper. She felt embarrassed but accepted it and disappeared back into the WC. After another few minutes, Mary emerged, much relieved. As Ian escorted his good lady back up the steps towards her seat, the man who had given her the toilet roll rushed past them and into the ladies toilet. Ian and Mary watched for a few seconds before the guy came buck out, holding the toilet roll in his hands and rushing back from whence he came.

“I knew Rangers had a few financial problems,” Ian told me on the telephone over the weekend, “But if they are rationing toilet roll in the ladies loo, then they really are up shit creek.”

  9. MILDRED WANYAMA is almost 5,000 miles away in Nairobi.

But her influence over new Celtic idol and son Victor remains as strong as when he still lived in the family home.

The Clydesdale Bank Young Player of the Month for December is fast making a name for himself.

At just £900,000, Wanyama already looks like one of the signings of this or any other season.

    And he’s still only 20.

His debut campaign in the Hoops has seen the powerful Kenyan shine in midfield and at centre-half.

Celtic fans have quickly taken him to their hearts with a special song.

And Wanyama last night revealed his upbringing by mother Mildred and father Noah will ensure there’s no chance of him ever getting carried away by his success.

He said: “My mum and dad were very strict and that was the way I was raised.

“I’m used to a life of not drinking and not going out and I’m happy like that.

“I speak to my mum every day still. She phones to see how I’m doing.”

It will be the same for Wanyama’s older brother McDonald Mariga, 24, who is currently on loan to Real Sociedad from Inter Milan.

McDonald’s playing commitments have so far prevented him from flying to Glasgow to watch Victor.

Wanyama added: “McDonald is very busy and he has not had time. He is at Real Sociedad now.

“The Spanish league plays at the same time as us, so I don’t think there will be time for him to come over here.

“I know back home they always try and follow my games on TV as football is one of the big sports in Kenya now.

“We have lots of players leaving the country to go and play abroad and the game has really grown up back home.

“This is a chance for me to learn more and try to be one of the best players in the league. I want to win things with Celtic. I think I have settled into the team. I know the style of play and I’m happy to go with it, so it is easier for me.

“It was difficult for me with the weather at first, but, apart from the rain, this is a good place.

“I knew if I worked hard anything would be possible. Since I arrived I have been trying to get into the team and it has been going well.

“It means a lot that the fans like me. If there were no fans football would be nothing. I am looking forward to giving them more good results.

“I always hear them singing my name and it gives me an extra boost to go and try to do my best. In Belgium it wasn’t a song, the fans chanted my name, but it was not a proper song like here!

“I don’t go out that much, but when I go out, Celtic supporters are everywhere. I always say ‘Hi’.

“It is easy to recognise me because there aren’t too many African players in the team.

“Everyone has been really nice and friendly. In the dressing room everyone is like a family and they are all very good to me and have helped me settle in.

“The game in Scotland is very different from the Belgian league.

“I was lucky to be here before the season started because it meant I could play in friendly matches which helped me a lot.” Wanyama is tied to Celtic until at least 2015 — and he couldn’t be happier.

He’s part of a vibrant Neil Lennon side chasing the Treble.

He said: “I am a Celtic player. I am committed to the club and I have a long contract here.”

Boss Lennon has been thrilled with Wanyama’s rapid progress, but confessed he had originally seen the African as a star for the future.

He said: “Victor’s been outstanding this season. For someone so young, he’s shown great maturity and he’s been very consistent, whether in midfield or at the back.

“There’s no doubt Victor’s impact has been quicker than we thought. I thought we would eventually get him in the team this season. But the way he has been playing and training, allied with the injuries we’ve had, he’s come in a little bit quicker than we had anticipated.

“It’s testament to him that he’s done that and he’s become a real fulcrum of the team.

“Victor’s also become very popular with the supporters really quickly and that’s not always an easy thing to do.

“He has that iconic status already, which is fantastic for him.

“Victor’s got great presence on the pitch and great composure and he’s adapted brilliantly to the Scottish game. He was also excellent in Europe. He’s got good physicality as well as pace and athleticism, and technically he’s very good.

“Victor can buy himself a bit of time on the ball and nine times out of 10 he picks the right pass.

“It’s a huge bonus he doesn’t have to go away to the African Cup of Nations, especially with us having lost Beram Kayal for the season.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if he’s attracting interest from clubs, as are other players in the squad.

“Victor’s English is pretty good and he’s settled in with a few of the guys socially as well, so that’s been a huge help.

“It’s not easy because he’s still a young lad at 20. But there is a Kenyan community in Glasgow, so a few people have popped in and tried to help him along.”

  12. Caught up with Sportscene, St Johnstone rightly were upset at the yardage and advantage stolen by Steve Davis

Listening to the the so called radio experts on Saturday slamming St Johnstone for a nonsense protest due to as they seen it Davis only took a couple of steps then put the ball down a couple of yards away

The free kick was not given for a foul on Steve Davis the whistle went for a push in the back earlier, Thomson blew his whistle at the offence 7 YARDS away from where Davis stole his advantage, of course this is completely ignored by the experts including referee Thomson, we all know why.

Even if it’s just to annoy THEM we should do it. Also we should definitely look at signing his team mate Jerry Bengtson.

To be fair mate a lot of our games were affected by Euro involvement on Thursdays. This weekend we’re first at St Mirren.

It would be interesting to know the decision process right enough and who gets a say.

We have no league game in a fortnight because of the semi final and the huns have 2 home games against Aberdeen and Hibs before we got to Tynecastle on a Wednesday night. The wee run of fixtures coming up is definitely not in our favour, at least on paper.

4 games away from home coming up, including 2 cup games.

    Mon the hoops!

I agree the decision process in the SKY and ESPN editorial rooms is the fly on the wall wish

Lets say its purely commercial in that creating more pressure on Celtic boosts viewing figures, its still an unfair advantage to the Rankers

It is as you say a tough set of fixtures, IMO it is very welcome, it means we are on course for a very successful season, Celtic players can make a little piece of history fpr themselves this season lets hope they grab it

    ..–..–Games Goals Assists

    James F:22 5 4

    Joe L : 17 4 2 (From left back)

    Ki S Y : 21 5 4

    Victor : 17 3 2

    Whooooof! Controversial!

The man is absolutely dynamite when running at full tilt. Must be a complete nightmare to play against, and wins a far more than his fair share of balls in the air. Never anonymous.

The issue with the big man is that he’s one dimensional. Get it to Sammy and Sammy will do what he does. If it comes off it’s incredible edge of your seat stuff. If it doesn’t the play breaks down. I was thinking about it at the weekend and after last weeks chat about Hooper and Stokes goals return. The stats show they both have a decent return, though not incredible, and are also both or top of the chart for assists, Hooper 5 and Stokes 8, even ahead of wee James the winger. They assist each other in other words, very few of the team assist them. That should not be the case. Kris Commons has one more assist than Sammy this season from 6 less appearances. Only Kris can fill the Alan Thompson position that Henrik and the team enjoyed.

Anyway, on Saturday Hooper scored from a Stokes assist, and Wanyama from a set piece. There were no other balls laid on a plate for the strikers, but both worked really hard. As did Sammy and Scott Brown but in your heart when they are on the ball there is no real anticipation of a goal. From Sammy you do get the odd moment of rousing rumbustuousness.

I think we need to play Sammy for his endeavour and the option, but when the time suits and not as a first pick every time. It will be interesting to see how Neil sees it and who, if anyone, drops out for James and Kris.

    Hail Hail

  24. I also thought Adam Matthews had his worst game in a hooped jersey at the weekend. Apart from one good run down the right wing in the second half he was poor. However I read in this morning’s Herald match report that he was recovering from a virus which explains somewhat.

  25. A grey, chilly morning here in North Ayrshire.

I heard Steve Lomass comment on Rangers’ Sandaza approach.

“It would not have been handled like this in Sir David Murray’s time”, he lamented.

They have yet to understand that Murray’s grandiosity is what led them into this morass.

    The man remains above reproach.

    What a twisted wee country.
