Mind the Kayal Gap

794

Neil Lennon, his goalkeeper and defenders will not be too concerned at the loss of their first goal in domestic football yesterday since Noah was a boy.  John Rankin’s pot-shot from 20-odd yards clipped the post on its way in but the Dundee United player scored from an area of the field that is usually vigorously monitored by Beram Kayal.

We’re going to miss that guy……

    Saint Stivs,

Now conspiracy theories aside, how in the name of Jesus,is he no headin that out of the box or over the bar.

Didnae like the look of his wee weasly face as he walked away as if tae say mission accomplished either…

i am a wee fat guy, but that ball i would be trying to back head it away for a corner, definatley not turning my head in a way that put all the force of the heider towards the goal.

looks deliberate, the more i watch it.

StMiichaels – assuming your figures are correct they dont look too bad at all by todays even more parsimonious standards. But do you remember who we soild?

In any case you continue to miss my point – I’m not attempting to put this into context with the huns. We had more TV money etc in those days and could have easily afforded to do better – but Fergus refused. And just because you say spending more money would not have resulted in more success doesnt make it true – thats called defeatism

TV money from the initial SPL deal was worth less than £12m a season. I’ve already stated that our turnover in Wim’s season was £28m – this is the money we could have drawn from.

Seriously, are you just making crap up? Are you Hugh Keevins?

  3. AngelGabriel – I do love the fact that all their attempts to smear McCann came to nowt – Fergus was a straightup businessman and did exactly what he said he would.

As someone else said – compare and contrast with Whyte and the media’s treatment

I dont mind you thinking I was wrong but around 80% of the support agreed with me at the time. As for saying we werent aware of the media conspiracy – aw c’mon we all knew it and had been ignoring the gutter press for some time. I have ever been an advocate that there is institutional bias across Scotland. I tell everyone who talks to me about out it.

I don’t remember us selling anyone before the 1998-99 season started.

I can turn your point around. Just because you say spending more money would have led to more success doesn’t make it true.

We’ll never know. All we can do is put ourselves in Fergus’ position in season 1998-99. We can’t ignore the context either. The Huns were spending stupid money and we could never have matched it.

  5. Fact

Anyone who slags off Fergus McCann is a tit.

If you cannot see what that man did for our club…you aint Celtic,

    Whoever you profess to be.

and on the huns game, the saint j centre half who rattles the ball of the bar, to let the huns score, what was he trying to do , seriously, how can he head the ball in that direction, from that position.

  7. Dirtymac – yes I am Hugh Keevins – damn it you spotted it.

I have read celtic’s accounts every season I can remember – I cant remember detailed figures from the period in question but pretty sure your figures are wrong.

But cest la vie – I’m just not going to let you all reinvent history and blame your fellow supporters

correct fergus done what he said

i also recall an interview after he departed in which he warned against brining in k.d and j.b to manage the team

20 to 30 million pounds wasted and away they went 1 year later.

that could have paid fore lennox town complext 3 times over and could have changed/ improved/ developed the whole place at that time

ghod bless fergus mccann for saving celtic and giving me the opportunity to continue my love affair with our great club

wish D.D had such clear plans today

  9. Neganon2,

Once again you display an inbuilt aversion to whoever is in charge at Celtic Park.

You claim that Fergus “let us down” in his last season.

    I don’t buy that.

He never lied, he prioritised “our” funds. He had a responsibility not to risk squandering his and the shareholders money.

The “Field of Dreams” and infrastructure was that priority.

Nevertheless, he supplied enough funding to build a team which should have been capable of winning the flag and stopping NIAR.

Had the manager at the time not based his tactics on the Charge of the Light Brigade for every game, then perhaps a few of those snatched draws would have produced the required wins.

All very entertaining for the fans, I’m sure. The Glasgow Celtic Way and all that, but, with a bit of tactical nous, and less gung-ho, they would never have got their Nine.

I see another poster mentioned a couple of Big Jock’s low points.

They don’t seem to have sullied the Big Man’s reputation; and rightly so.

It also has to be remembered that Willie Maley tried to railroad Jimmy Mc.Grory to Arsenal, not once, but twice.

I don’t see his name being traduced.

No, it just appears to me that you have an advance dose of begrudgery, allied to a dislike of those in authority.

At least, you are consistent and don’t bend with the wind.

  10. Sabre67 – I dont agree that it was to do with Bhoys Against Bigotry – I was still a season ticket holder and attended all the games – that was never an issue amongst the majority of the support.

I agree with you on the media – but your fellow supporters are not that gullible. I also agree that fergus has more in the plus than minus column. All I am doing is replaying the context of what happenned.

Seriously? You think it’s not YOU who is reinventing history with your, “Fergus let us down,” skit?

Don’t get me wrong. At the time I’m sure lot’s of people DID feel that Fergus was letting us down, with his failure to find the £36m require to match the Huns transfer dealings, but the years since then should allow us a better perspective on that season.

Fergus did not let us down.

I’m off now, I’ll respond to any more posts you direct to me tomorrow. If we can still be bothered :-)

    From the 1998 accounts:

Turnover of the Celtic group rose by 25% over 1997 to £27.8 million.

fergus saved celtic and deserves respect for that, he done it with celtic fans and they deserve the same respect, well all have different opinions but we share the same goal

question is, would any of the ghuys down talking fergus wish for CW?

  14. Tric –

Oor wee hoose was right at the end of Singers station’s platform……

We were poor, but had excellent access to public transport.

  15. Thomthetim – the sad truth is we always seem to be let down by those who run the club – mainly because they only care about making money.

I never at any point said Fergus lied – where did that come from. You said he had a duty to protect his and shareholders money. That doesnt mean not spending it – just spending it wisely to achieve succesful outcomes.

I remember well the incredible frustration and tragedy of the Tommy Burn’s years – it still smarts that he came so close and we had such a wonderful team – but as others have said the huns just spent and spent – now we know they did so illegally too. Life’s not fair sometimes eh.

  16. NegAnon,

I am certain that the dissention that day was related to the Bhoys Against Bigotry stuff. 100%.

I am off to bed but hopefully one or two others can dig up the commentary from the time. It had nothing to do with investment in the team – we had a stadium to finish building when we won that title.

I know some posters think I go on too much about the cheating officials, but the way I see things is, if you are in a sport that is corrupt, and the corruption favours one team, what is the point ?

I know big Jock always said put the ball in the net more times than the opposition, but why should we have to do that ?

We have been cheated since our inception, of that there is no doubt, even the likes of Graham Spiers has conceded that there way bias in the past, but he can’t recall when the bias stopped, convienently, what will it take to get parrity ?

It’s just not possible in sectarian land, it will never happen, the whole system needs to be dismantled and started again, and that won’t be happening any time soon.

There has been some amazing posts the past week or so on the subject of newhunco and the like, and many good Tims have said they will walk away if the hun are parachuted back into the spl, I would be one of them, I no longer attend for geographical reasons, but my family contribute well over a grand each year to the club.

Interesting times ahead mi amigo, I said during the dougie dougie debackle that court cases were on the horizon, well the horizon is well within sight now, and the next few months will see court cases.

The dossier will be getting an airing as well imo.

MIH IS A SUBSIDIARY OF UBERIOR EQUITY LTD

Uberior Equity is a subsidiary of Lloyds Banking Group. Sir David Murray is no longer the owner of MIH. This may have implications for the Tax case, it will certainly have implications for the ridiculous notion that Murray will be coming back

Not sure this will format perfectly, however here is a report from Equifax showing the MIH is now owned by who I said, and Murray only owns a tiny share of the business

  22. Stepbhoy I would take Fergus over the “whyte knight” in a heartbeat.

Dirtymac – you have neglected to mention the capital injection that Celtic had – though most of it was spent (quite rightly) on the stadium there was also promise to invest in the team.

Life’s rarely black and white guys – stop blaming your fellow supporters just cos you dont always agree with them

  23. Kojo – if anything I think the parsimony from the Board today is MUCH worse than what Fergus did.

And ever we are told to be scared – just like our government likes to keep us. Stops us asking hard questions and holding people to account,

Its shameful to blame the supporters of CFC – at least we are still there – through it all. So enough with the insults?

    Aye Hmmmmmmmmmmm…

  29. I think the reaction on flag day tp Fergus McCann was due to a few reasons.

Jansen had stopped 10 in a row and there was the perception that he was forced out by McCann and Brown. Brown then spent the summer telling us we would get a top class manager and we got Venglos too late to improve the squad before the season started.

Venglos was a good manager but was brought in too late.He brought in some good players like Lubo, Mjallby but not till about November The frustration of the Celtic fans that day was probably the realisation that we had shot ourselves in the foot again from a good position.
