Money on the table will decide European football future

286

I see the Sun have a steer today that Celtic “will join forces” with clubs from Netherlands, Portugal and Belgium to oppose the suggestion from Barcelona and Bayern Munich that the likes of Manchester United should get automatic access to the Champions League, whether they qualify or not.

The consensus spreads beyond the countries mentioned above, Greece and Turkey also have large teams, unable to take advantage of lucrative domestic TV contracts.

As Barcelona’s Josep Bartomeu told the BBC, the FA Premier League presents a real threat to all clubs outside it. The suggestion is that TV and commercial values of the Champions League should be bolstered (which it would by having Manchester United next season instead of Galatasaray) to raise the income dividend for all participants.

This proposal would put more income onto Barcelona and Bayern’s top lines but it would not change the fundamental issue that the English and Welsh league generates vastly more income than any other domestic league. Raising income generated from Champions League football would not reduce the disparity in income from domestic football between England and Wales, and the rest.

What’s needed is a league to replace the existing domestic leagues, filled with big teams with large stadiums packed with supporters each week. There are enough big European clubs outside of England capable of fitting this criteria to fill two 20 team leagues.

Two divisions of 20, broadcast live across the world on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, each game played by huge clubs in front of >50,000 seater stadiums would dwarf the England and Wales league.

The earning potential is there to make it happen. What’s needed is someone to put money on the table.

  1. “Money on the table” sublimates “football without fans is nothing.”

Yeah roll on money on the table and WWF Wrestling Football because Tims will be barred.

Nae money in Tims. Too honorable. I’ll be glad to see the death of football and all the filth that goes with it. Celtic last man standing.

    Someone take these dreams away,

That point me to another day,

    A duel of personalities,

    That stretch all true realities.

Where figures from the past stand tall,

And mocking voices ring the halls.

    Imperialistic house of prayer,

    Conquistadors who took their share.

  2. At the Hammersmith Apollo tonight with Mrs jimbob71. She arranged it as my Christmas present, all for Stand up for Shelter gig.

Dara O’Briain, Milton Jones were the headline acts. Fantastic night and lots of money raised for a good cause

  3. Am I reading too much into Paul’s leader?

Is he promoting a franchise scenario based on crowds, stadium size, financial stability?

Would we have a USA set up with no promotion or relegation?

Could a franchise owner move the side to another city with a bigger TV audience?

Who would own the licence or the player registration?

Would the SFA be involved in deciding which side would be nominated for the new league?

Have all of these been discussed on previous pages?

A cup game on Mother’s Day is a great opportunity for a maws get in free initiative. Come on Celtic you know it makes sense. Fill the top tier wi the click clack of knitting needles.

    What a brilliant idea CRAIGELLACHIE10 ~ 10 out of 10 in fact!

“too”? as in Celtic selling their soul for money too?

    That kind of “too”?

a sorta Old Firm “too” or “two”?

  6. Has Magic Warburton completely scuttled the chances of Sxotlamd’s newest football club to sign young promising and ambitious footballers?

What parent, even the most ardent supporter, would wish his child prodigy to reach 16 or 17 and face the prospect of his development coming to a hard stop?

No more professional coaching or preferred treatment?

No more indoor training facilities, massages and physical therapy, luxury transport, kudos from his class mates, or a handsome pay packet.

Instead cold nights training on muddy fields at Cliftonhill, Ochilview, Cappielow etc.

Cold baths, limited facilities and a rush for a bus or train home afterwards.

Hearts, Falkirk, Hamilton Accies will have more attraction to doting parents.

Of course recent evidence shows that they are really a buying team with a large war chest and an even large sense of their own importance.

We seem to be witnessing an attempt to bring the whole of Scottish football down to a level (5?) in which the newest club can compete……sans EBT’s, of course

  8. It was the older version of the current tribute act which axed the old reserve league, coincidentally while we were set to win 10 in a row.

Of course the reason was due to concern for the growth of the game.

Nothing to do with impending financial ruin and a slow lingering embarrassing death.

  9. Hoops at the LA Galaxy v Santos Laguna game.

And a tricolor behind the goal.

    It’s LA not Scotland.

  10. Its feasible with European alliances looking east to China and India for broadcast partners. Both India and China have their own versions of the US ‘pensioners league’ (the MLS). Interest Asia in a competitive and athletic league…. and the money may well follow.

  11. Robbie Keane in physical and verbal dispute with Santos Laguna bench.

Shades of a shameful night at CP with Diouf and the rotund Grumpy Gardener.

  12. Steven Gerrard looks awful ponderous and slow.

He has had a yellow for a dangerous tackle.

LA Galaxy at home hold on for a 0-0 draw, against a more energetic and forceful Santos Laguna.

Ashley Cole, Gerrrd and Keane not finding life so easy.

Second leg in Mexico next week.

Don’t panic,PAUL67. No intentions of posting it. It’s hardly news anyway. Just wondered who could have found such fault in it.

  15. Good morning my friends. Another chilly start to the day in EK with frosted windscreens as fas as my eyes can see.

Ominous looking clouds overhead, none of which have yet released their contents. Will it be rain…..will it be snow….only a fool would predict ;-)

One more sleep then a chance to go 9 points clear.

  16. Any manager who would take in Tony Stokes….hisny goat it.

No manager worth his salt would go near him.

Hibs are doomed ah tell ye….Doomed!

A sleekit move by PL after all eh.

If, Stokes didny have such dubious associates…we’d still be stuck wi him.

Only time that Stokes has been any guid was under Big Yogi…imho.

Maybe it’s just me but….I wanted Hearts to beat Hibs in the SC.

The thinking…..if, the huns manage to get Hibs…Hibs’ll go oot.

Whereas…if they got Hearts…Big Levine hates the huns and would have cooked a guid broth to feed to Hearts players that would ensure a hun skelping, maybe even another ‘Shame-game’ scenario.

    What’s not to like.

Big Jim Duffy is a more savvier manager than Ronny…that’s all I’m saying.

Btw….whit’s with all these strange yins fae Blantyre wanting ‘me’ to join them on Friday ?

Are they awe dafties oot there ?:)

marspapa – Thanks for the offer but….guess whit ?…I’ll be remaining a stranger, on Friday at least…working in a hun-infested warehouse on Friday night where snakes in the grass are absolutely free.

Thank you for the offer all the same…we’ll meet one day…hopefully.

Take care and, watch how ye got on wi yon BT and his like:)

  19. CELTIC have been linked with a move for Copenhagen defensive midfielder Thomas Delaney.

Irish-American Delaney, who plays his international football for Denmark, hinted at a move away from the Danish capital in the summer, and Celtic scouts ran the rule over the 24-year-old during a friendly match at the weekend

Will anyone notice? Sportscene is so bad I would imagine few tune in anymore. All goals/highlights can be seen online (or Sky/BT) on the day of the game rather than waiting until the following evening. There live coverage of cup ties is amateurish. They’ve lost the League Cup to BT and Sky have first choice of Scottish Cup games.

When Ronny Deila said that he would play it by ear with Patrick Roberts` introduction to first team football, quite a few on here translated that into Patrick would not feature this season. When the actual statement was highlighted, some accepted that they had complained too hastily. Patrick has now made a promising debut. I wonder if that will, somehow, be used against Ronny.

For what it is worth, here is my assessment of our managers since my return to Scotland:

    Gordon Strachan: Successful but dull football;

    Tony Mowbray: Unsuccessful but, initially, good to watch;

    Neil Lennon: A mixed bag under outrageous treatment from so many in Scotland;

Ronny Deila: Also a mixed bag but, if the support back him ( we know the MSSM won`t), I believe he could become a Celtic great.
