Moussa, forget Ibrox, concentrate on trip to Brussels

226

We have a lot of football to play between now and our visit to Ibrox in just over two weeks, but perhaps the most important game of the month comes immediately after that match, in Brussels against Anderlecht. Moussa Dembele declaring himself ready to face a team he spent last season punishing in ruthless fashion is welcome, but without being disrespectful to our domestic opponents, a point in Brussels is far more valuable than a win at Ibrox.

Three games, against Hamilton Accies, Ross County and Dundee, stand out as opportunities to get Moussa and Odsonne Edouard match-fit Brussels. We have the opportunity to bury a weak-willed performance there in 2003, when Larsson, Sutton, Hartson etc. went down meekly to 10 men.

The PSG game will take care of itself. We have a punchers chance against an outrageously (and, some allege, illegally) acquired football team. I’ll take our chances against anyone at home, but if we can’t perform in Brussels, nothing we do against PSG will matter.

Interesting article on Man City, corporations owning multi clubs is a disgrace IMO its anti football

City did not charge Girona a loan fee for any of the five players they sent to the club, although that is not unusual in itself – they did not charge Celtic a loan fee for striker Patrick Roberts when he agreed another 12-month spell with the Scottish champions this summer.

Manchester City’s owners say they are considering legal action after La Liga president Javier Tebas accused them of “financial doping”.

Tebas said City and Paris St-Germain had spent money from outside football and action should be taken to stop it.

He also said Girona, the club in which City’s owners bought a 44.3% stake last month, had tried to “cook the books” after taking players on loan from City.

“Mr Tebas’ statements are ill-informed and in parts pure fiction,” City said.

The City Football Group (CFG) added: “As you would expect, Manchester City Football Club and the City Football Group are seeking appropriate legal counsel and will act accordingly on that advice.”

City were taken over by the Abu Dhabi United Group in 2008 and this summer spent £215m – the most by any club in a transfer window.

“I need more money from TV, otherwise Manchester City with its oil will take all these players,” Tebas, head of Spain’s top flight, said at the Soccerex conference in Manchester on Wednesday.

European football’s governing body Uefa has already said it has no plans to investigate City over the Premier League club’s financial situation.

It is understood Tebas met City chief executive Ferran Soriano at the club’s Etihad Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

The French football league has also criticised Tebas.

“The league strongly condemns the insulting comments regarding PSG made today by the president of La Liga,” it said in a statement.

“These undignified comments do not live up to the standards of an institution as respectable and high-performing as the Spanish league.”

    Tebas criticises Girona deal

CFG added La Liga new boys Girona to a stable that also includes clubs in Australia, Japan, Uruguay and the US.

Over the course of the summer, Girona signed five City players on loan – Douglas Luiz, Marlos Moreno, Larry Kayode, Aleix Garcia and Pablo Maffeo.

Tebas said La Liga had stepped in to prevent the five being registered for far less than their correct value.

He said: “Some of the loan prices were too low.

“Five players coming from Man City are worth one euro each? It wasn’t one euro obviously but it would be unfaithful competition within the Spanish league if Girona were able to report these players in a certain way.”

Asked if he thought Girona were “cooking the books”, Tebas replied: “They were trying to but they didn’t manage to do it.”

Girona, are competing in the top tier of the Spanish league for the first time this season. They were set a limit of 80m euros to spend on their squad by La Liga following an assessment of the club’s financial position.

Despite the changes made at La Liga’s insistence, the club remain under that salary cap.

City did not charge Girona a loan fee for any of the five players they sent to the club, although that is not unusual in itself – they did not charge Celtic a loan fee for striker Patrick Roberts when he agreed another 12-month spell with the Scottish champions this summer.

Celtic have not given up hope of the Scottish Football Association agreeing to a judicial inquiry which would examine fully the roles played by the game’s ruling bodies before, during and after the financial implosion of Rangers in 2012.

It is understood that, while the SFA have yet to respond to a call from the Ladbrokes Premiership champions for such a forensic investigation some two months ago, Celtic believe that more stringent rules, checks and balances ought to be in place in order to restore confidence in the SFA while simultaneously ensuring that Rangers or any other club are not allowed to run up such unsustainable debts in future.

I am sure Follow Follow will have a thread about State Aid regarding that last sentence from the BBC article.

    Hello T,

although that is not unusual in itself

  13. According to said Follow Follow, the letter sent by PL in 2012 states:-

“Peter Lawwell’s 2012 correspondence over the EBT saga has emerged

Its emergence comes two months after Celtic publicly called on footie chiefs to reopen their probe into the saga that has rocked Scottish football.

The Supreme Court’s ‘Big Tax Case’ ruling in favour of HMRC sparked calls for Gers to be stripped of titles, while fan group Club 1872 and chairman Dave King hit out at their rivals’ reaction.

Lawwell’s letter said: “If the allegations of ‘double contracts’ for players are true, and a breach of SPL and/or SFA rules is established, the eligibility of those players to have competed in domestic league and cup competitions will be called into question.

“In turn, the integrity of the football results achieved by using those players would by necessity also fall into question.

“Any wrongdoing then established would have to be subject to fair and proportionate sanctions, including retrospectively, if appropriate.”

“EUROPEAN LAW Celtic chief Peter Lawwell meets with some of European football’s top power brokers in Geneva

“However, at a higher level, in our opinion this whole affair is causing lasting damage to the reputation and integrity of Scottish football.”

The Celtic chief’s correspondence went on: “The interests of fairness and Scottish football now demand that the SFA act decisively.

“The initial inquiry should now be reconvened or a new independent panel led by a judge or senior lawyer should be formed to investigate and report upon the Rangers EBT issues and consider whether there has been any further breach of the Association’s rules, including those on disrepute.”

So correct me if I’m wrong, based on what is being issued this morning

FtSFA, have yet to respond to a letter/ request from Celtic dated 25/05/12, so over 5 years ago ?

And that does not refer to Celtic request post the Supreme Court ruling on EBT’s, from 2017.

Based on this, Celtic should now be going above FtSFA, and forcing the issue

Res12 will have to be taken on

It is understood that, while the SFA have yet to respond to a call from the Ladbrokes Premiership champions for such a forensic investigation some two months ago

Now the SFA who have had two months with a request from a member club requesting a forensic investigation have not complied indeed not withstanding public statements by the SFA that they are not going to investigate

We are now back to the Res12 Traverso letter, a member club ie Celtic FC request a EUFA investigation its long overdue HH

Celtic still pressing SFA for inquiry. Lawwell letter from 2012 outlines stance

    Ewing Grahame

    September 7 2017

    The Times

Lawwell demanded a judicial review into the financial collapse of Rangers

The Times can also reveal that, in an letter sent by Peter Lawwell to Stewart Regan, the SFA’s chief executive, immediately prior to Rangers descending from administration into liquidation five years ago, the Celtic chief executive not only demanded a judicial review of the scandal which rocked the national sport but also insisted that title-stripping and the removal of national cup competitions won by the fallen Glasgow club between 1999 and 2010 should form part of the sanctions open to that panel.

During those years, Sir David Murray had employed tax avoidance policies: firstly, the Discounted Option Scheme, for which they admitted liability, and secondly, the Employee Benefit Trusts, for which they did not. The deployment of these complex plans allowed Rangers to make tax-free payments to players, managers, staff and former employees in the shape of “loans” or discretionary bonuses from the Trust.

Murray took £6.3 million worth of net payments in EBTs while other major beneficiaries included Barry Ferguson (£2.5 million), Stefan Klos (£2 million), Dado Prso (£1.9 million), Christian Nerlinger (£1.8 million), Michael Ball (£1.4 million), Tore André Flo (£1.3 million), Ronald de Boer and Thomas Buffel (£1.2 million each), Claudio Caniggia and Pedro Mendes (£1 million each) and managers Alex McLeish (£1.7 million) and Dick Advocaat (£1.5 million).

Celtic believed then that the involvement of the aforementioned players, along with 46 others, in league and cup matches during that 11-year span should make all their results null and void, should it be proved that the tax avoidance schemes had been misused.

“If the allegations of ‘double contracts’ for players are true, and a breach of SPL and/or SFA rules is established, the eligibility of those players to have competed in domestic league and cup competitions will be called into question,” Lawwell wrote in his letter, sent on May 25, 2012, the 45th anniversary of Celtic’s European Cup triumph.

“In turn, the integrity of the football results achieved by using those players would by necessity also fall into question. Any wrongdoing then established would have to be subject to fair and proportionate sanctions, including retrospectively, if appropriate. However, at a higher level, in our opinion this whole affair is causing lasting damage to the reputation and integrity of Scottish football.”

It adds: “The interests of fairness and Scottish football now demand that the SFA act decisively. The initial inquiry should now be reconvened or a new independent panel led by a judge or senior lawyer should be formed to investigate and report upon the Rangers EBT issues and consider whether there has been any further breach of the Association’s rules, including those on disrepute.

“The roles of individuals (past and present) subject to the jurisdiction of the Association should also be examined. This should take place as quickly as possible, irrespective of the SPL’s own investigations.”

Five Supreme Court judges decided unanimously on July 5 that EBT payments were liable for tax. Rangers had denied the existence of side letters to players guaranteeing their extra payments — most of them were performance-related — to Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs and the footballing authorities but they were uncovered during a police raid on Ibrox.

Murray confessed in court earlier this year that EBTs “gave us [Rangers] an opportunity to get players that we perhaps would not be able to afford [otherwise]”. When the Supreme Court verdict was announced, the SFA issued a statement which said they would do nothing, on legal advice.

The SPFL board — it includes Rangers’ Stewart Robertson — also asked the SFA more than six weeks ago to consent to an impartial probe into how the governing bodies dealt with Rangers’ financial meltdown. It too has been met with silence.

  20. April 2012, before the failure to agree a CVA and avert death.

SFA chief executive Stewart Regan, meanwhile, admitted last night Rangers must play an “integral part” in the future of the Scottish game.

Regan said: “It is important the Scottish FA, as the governing body, works in association with the Scottish Premier League and Scottish Football League to reinvigorate the national sport.

“Rangers have been part of the fabric of Scottish football’s history and are integral to its future prosperity. The Scottish FA must act with integrity and with the best interests of the game at heart. It is with this in mind that we await any appeal from the club.

“I can fully understand the fear and frustration felt by all Rangers fans throughout the most difficult period in the club’s history.

“The Scottish FA has a responsibility to all its members and must implement its rules without fear or favour.”

  21. “This decision could kill our football club, simple as that. Make no mistake about it. This panel is not totally to blame for the death of our football club if it happens but this particular decision could kill our football club.”

    That’s football club, right?

I take it back. How utterly civil and fair-minded of him, not to lay ALL of the blame for the impending liquidation of, please note, “our football CLUB ” on a 3 man panel who imposed the original transfer ban in 2012.
