New Balance take over from Nike this summer as Celtic’s official kit partner and main sponsor. The US sportswear firm have along heritage in technical products, like running shoes, with less of a legacy in the leisurewear market than the likes of Nike, but this move, as well as a recent deal to partner Liverpool, indicates a strong commitment to become a major player in the football marketplace.
Both the Celtic and Liverpool contracts have been advertised as potentially record deals for the respective clubs, although each club declined to put a figure on the value, or the contract period in their official statements. It’s likely that a significant part of the contract fee will depend on Champions League qualification.
Unconfirmed reports put the size of the deal at £29m, cash that other clubs have securitised off to a retailer.

I’ve wrestled with this so much, still dinnae have a clue. I trust the Lord (obviously not the one on the Board) though.
The irony of all this, it looks to me that the Board have had a long term plan and it is likely to bear fruit.
Academy kids will likely stay @ Celtic and a higher % will start breaking through, we need this to happen, so we can give Bloody noses to all of Europes tier wan teams.
I was talking to Gordon64 over in Belfast and he is of the mind to shut more of the top tier, to make it a better atmosphere, I firmly believe that Ronny, when he has his team on the pitch, will have a lot more Celtic supporters coming back to the Arena and a whole host of Neutrals wanting to see the Style of Fitba being played.

I am reminded of John Reid’s answer to the Celtic AGM in 2008 which I thought covered the issue pretty well even if some folk have a problem with the author, who managed to be disliked equally by both sides as NI Minister in the days leading up to the Good Friday agreement . (Great Hatred Little Room, a book by Jonathon Powell the civil servant working on the process gives a bit of insight into John Reid)
John Reid’s Statement at Celtic AGM 2008 when asked:
Why did you decide to speak out about ‘The Famine Song’ and is it important that the club make sure that our supporters protect the integrity of Celtic’s name?
I spoke out about it because this is a pretty vile song and I don’t think that any reasonable person who has read the words of this song can see it as anything other than a pretty vicious, racist song. It combines racism and sectarianism and goes beyond a lot of other things that we have seen in the past. That’s one of the reasons why I spoke out and I also come from Irish and Scottish descent myself, so that’s the main reason.
But there is a bigger and wider reason as well and that is, the nature of this club. We are proud of the fact that we have Scottish origins and Irish heritage and we are never going to deny that. We will defend that and that is not a cause for shame, it’s a cause for recognition and celebration. Indeed our very name ‘Celtic’ is about the unity of the Scottish and Irish people. We have to be careful, from our own point of view and that’s why I am absolutely delighted that our fans in recent years have had accolades from the world football authorities, from the European football authorities and let me say when I point out that there may be a minority who are transgressing our own rules, that they are our own rules. I don’t know any Celtic fans who have been chanting racist slogans or anything of that nature, so I am not comparing like with like here. But I am saying that we have got to be whiter than white and that we have to explain to and educate everybody at this club, including that tiny minority which at away games sometimes leaves us exposed to those who would attempt to say that we are all the same. We aren’t all the same, but we have to make sure that that is evident to everybody. That’s the nature of Celtic Football Club.

I agree that kick off times are an issue with our home attendances. However Imo ” safe standing” is a retrograde step which will do nothing for atmosphere or attendance.
We have an iconic arena which is acknowledged as possibly the most atmospheric in Europe when the opposition and competition grabs our people’s imagination. Why change this?
Our focus should be encouraging the fans who attended the Inter game to make the effort for our bread and butter games. Creat incentives, consultation with the fans, rather than conflict and redouble our efforts to prevent the illegal streaming sites.
Shutting parts of the ground is answerable by us . Simple, go to the games instead of typing about it.
Or even more preferable do both.

So what’s the motivation behind the STV ambush of the NB deal launch? We know they are officially in cahoots with Sevco, they are happy to publicise this tie up, but why, at this time would their “journalist” try to hijack a presser in a way that sabotages a major deal involving a Scottish club? Is MR Smith trying for wider recognition in the hope that he comes to the notice of a bigger employer? On a day when an STV journalist managed to shoehorn a question about Celtic and Irish Republicanism, (this during a press conference about a new kit sponsor) I was drawn via Twitter to an article in the Scotsman.
Police Scotland have released a list of ‘words’ banned on their facebook page. Fair enough, no one wants to see profanity written all over a facebook page, however. On inspection of the article, I was left dumbfounded by how touchy Police Scotland have become.
One of the most bizarre parts was this wee gem !

They can become sectarian if certain profanities are added, but on their own they are not. I think the article says more about how Police Scotland view the world rather than anything else.

An interesting word popped up at yesterday’s press conference and it was spoken by Peter Lawwell, he said “proscribed” and it was the first time I’d heard anyone in Scotland use it. I suspect we’re going to hear it a lot more.
The bothersome and unworkable Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications needs clarification and focusing and how better than target songs sung by football supporters that glorify proscribed organisations. That’ll provide a basis to make it illegal and prosecutable to sing The Boys Of The Old Brigade and many other songs in the Celtic Supporters repertoire.
It’s so simple really; the IRA is a proscribed terrorist organisation as deigned by the British Home Office, no differentiation between old/new or provisional.
