New Balance for Celtic

860

New Balance take over from Nike this summer as Celtic’s official kit partner and main sponsor.  The US sportswear firm have along heritage in technical products, like running shoes, with less of a legacy in the leisurewear market than the likes of Nike, but this move, as well as a recent deal to partner Liverpool, indicates a strong commitment to become a major player in the football marketplace.

Both the Celtic and Liverpool contracts have been advertised as potentially record deals for the respective clubs, although each club declined to put a figure on the value, or the contract period in their official statements.  It’s likely that a significant part of the contract fee will depend on Champions League qualification.

Unconfirmed reports put the size of the deal at £29m, cash that other clubs have securitised off to a retailer.

Last call today for CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner, which takes place next Friday, 13 March, at the Kerrydale Suite.  After the dinner we have a Q&A with Packy Bonnar, Tommy Coyne, Joe Miller and Tom Boyd.  We have Archie Macpherson speaking about Jock Stein on the 50th anniversary of him becoming manager, and song from Patricia Ferns.

The object of the night is to raise money to build another school kitchen for Mary’s Meals in Malawi.  Kris Commons’ partner, Lisa Hague, will also join us.  She will be auctioning an incredible prize of a signed Ronny Deila jersey, signed Kris Commons boots and match hospitality in the Players’ Lounge for the Marie Curie Hospice in Glasgow.

Tickets will be posted out over the next few days, email me if you’re still looking, celticquicknews@gmail.com we’re closing the book tomorrow.

  1. In that 5-live radio interview the Prof seemed to be saying that Lambias will out today but could be re-enstated as chairman on Monday – by Ashley!!. Does that mean that King wins today but Ashley will still be calling the shots???

  2. It may have been STV that threw the handgrenade at PL but good old shortbread are jumping on it and giving full coverage to the anti-Celtic smear.

  3. Been out of commission for a few days. Have had a bad bout of flu and still not over it.

Have watched and read about the sabotage of our media conference.

These people claim to want a strong Scottish football and that may be true , so how does trying to dig up controversy with the leading club further that cause?

Ofcourse , when these people claim they want a strong Scottish game what they really mean is they want a strong Rangers with everyone else left in their wake.

Big Pete rose to the bait, I thought he was cuter than that .

His real mistake however was to distance himself from Republicanism.

He has perpetuated the myth in this country that Irishness and Republicanism is somehow to be distanced from, that it is somehow sectarian.

Has big Pete helped the cause or has he performed no better than the tube on Clyde last week who said that flaunting the Tri colour was sectarian?

  4. awalkacrosstherooftops @ 08:07,

Heard that this morning, nice wake up call…

The guys on the program tend to be Big Business and London centric.

But it pays these folk to know what’s going on, especially if one of their big beasts like Mr Ashley is involved.

Two highlights is when they said, paraphrasing…

So if they change the Board Ashley still has the power to appoint two Directors.

    Yes

So they could be back in position on Monday then.

    Yes

Maybe Llambias shouldn’t clear his desk.

    Then at the end.

So [Prof Brady] would you invest in the Club.

Investing in Football Clubs is notoriously difficult, anyway I can’t invest in Rangers I’m Catholic…..

    Hail Hail

  5. Jamesgang/starry plough/bamboo.

He was on talking about the general Sevco shambles and Kings tax problems in SA.He was then asked abt Sports Direct and whats in it for them and as Bamboo says he intimated that it wasnt worth Llambias and Leach clearing out their desks as they would be back by Monday

    Parting shot was this.

I wouldnt invest in R*****s anyway as Im a Catholic.Nearly crashed the car when he said it.

  6. S T V and Sevco.I’m sure they there is link somewhere. Sponsorship or something. They are all pro sevco.yes time to have P R in place when the media come calling.Jeannette Findlay good shout also Terry O Neil what ever happened to him.never hear him on the media.but regarding them getting a PR job at Celtic.no chance to left wing.for the snobs that run our club.

  7. There has got to come a day when we defend ourselves , against the anti celtic .anti irish . Anti catholic media . How often are we going to turn the other cheek . Someone in authority at stv , bbc and the written press , is setting the agenda against celtic f.c . Someone connected to the club must know who these people are , is it not time they were called out .

    “5 Live this morning – 5:50am

    Discussing the [Sevco] situation, badly.

On comes a professor of Sports Business at Salford Uni (only caught the title, not the name – though may have been Kruse or a variant).

So after condescending about our situation, extolling the virtues of Sports Direct’s influence at the club (as if [Ashley] has been some kind of benevolent benefactor single handedly keeping us afloat) he says the following regards the reason for investing in us, or more pertinently not

‘Of course, I’m a Catholic so couldn’t invest in [Sevco]’ – the implication being that we would not accept money from supporters that were not of the Reformed faith and that Catholics are not welcome at [Sevco]. Not that he wouldn’t invest in us, as he’s a Catholic.

The presenter asked him not to go down that route but the Prof said it’s early morning and no-one’s listening.

Well I was listening Prof, and have complained about the tone and claim to both your place of employment and the radio station who gave you the platform to air your own sectarian views.”

    ——

“Have you got the phone numbers that I can complain to ?”

    ——

    “Well done for highlighting this”

    ——

“I heard chris o’brady say this and nearly crashed my car. The presenter was clearly taken aback. Not only factually incorrect, but utterly offensive. He should never be invited on again”

    ——

“another sad bigot with air time to defame our club and spout his ingrained sectarianism bile”

    ——

“Rangers were not ‘born’ a religious team, it was bigots like him who’s team only ever won because they were good catholics, that brought religious bigotry into sport which should never be contaminated by religion or politics.”

    ——

“Is the high and mighty professor suggesting, subliminally, of course, that catholics (is that RC?) shouldn’t invest in Rangers, and, if so, why?

    Is this a sectarian comment?”

    ——

“Lets nail this again. In the 50’s and 60’s Catholics, the Roman ones, didn’t want to play for Rangers, probably under the instruction of the priest.”

    ——

“However way you dress it up, he holds a position of influence at a University and was given a platform by the national broadcaster from which he chose to misrepresent a club he quite clearly loathes for what are purely Sectarian reasons.

    That’s not acceptable.”

Just listened to the interview. For those who wont get round to it he made 2 points. One being that llambias will be reinstated as a Sevco director again on Monday and the other more controversial point was that as a Catholic he wouldn’t be allowed to invest in Sevco. (He was joking-I think?)

The interviewer was taken aback at this comment.

    Murdochbhoy

It is here that we delve back into not so ancient “Irish” and journalistic history.

In the 80’s lots of Celtic supporters I spoke to didn’t have a clue about the fact that 3 of the counties of Ulster were in the Republic.

Others didn’t have a clue about the fact that after the 1916 rising there was a 1922 election.

Even more didn’t have a clue about the evolution of Republican parties into Fianna Fail and Fianna Gael just as in the same way very few actually read what elements of Sinn Fein proposed as a party and how their policies would affect things like the UK, The Royal Family and the position of Ireland in terms of the Commonwealth and so on.

Journalism, and therefore public knowledge on Ireland is appalling at best and more often just a disgrace.

Now we have that old list of proscribed organisations.

I am not necessarily a fan or supporter of any of the organisations mentioned and I certainly don’t support the policies of most.

However – these organisations are proscribed on what basis?

    What is the test?

    What is the criteria?

Who makes the decision and by what process?

Take Cumann na mBan for example. Historically the woman’s movement that supported the 1916 uprising but admittedly still a movement which has very strident views – again which I don’t necessarily support at all and which, I suspect, many of its founding members wouldn’t support either.

Why is it proscribed in this country?

Interestingly, it is deliberately not proscribed by the State Department of the United States of America which is not slow to proscribe, ban and alienate organisations that it thinks are harmful, subversive and illegal.

The point is that whoever advised PL to go down the “proscribed” route – if anyone did — opens up a complete political and legal minefield which takes the whole thrust of that presser away from New Balance and the sponsorship deal that was meant to be the focus of the PR.

Why didn’t Lawell simply say that the club will be worknig with fans groups, the SLO and UEFA to ensure that the club does everything to stop breaches of the UEFA rules or guidelines in the future.

By the way can I remind everyone that the latest UEFA charge was about a flare and not about the conduct of fans in relation to any organisation or political opinion that has been proscribed or otherwise.

Absolutely Unbelievable that this has become a topic of conversation and it would appear that we are just not smart enough.

    My friends in Celtic,

I agree that kick off times are an issue with our home attendances. However Imo ” safe standing” is a retrograde step which will do nothing for atmosphere or attendance.

    ============

You’ve clearly not been to an away match in recent years where the majority stand for the majority of the time.

You cannot say that increasing choice and catering for the preferences of your target audience, many of whom would stand given the choice, will not affect attendance.

Ach, there you go actually bringing some facts to the table and questioning things, typical Celtic supporter.

Of course your absolutely right, as always. Peter Lawwell’s performance yesterday was less than professional and his use of the word ‘proscribed’, I believe, wasn’t accidental.

  30. Celtic’s proposal regarding safe standing was to focus on three sections of the stadium, 110, 111 and 112. I believe it would remove somewhere in the region of 1,200 seats to allow for the standing area.

Judging by the numbers who stand at away games, it would quickly be oversubscribed.

  31. How many times…..

Scotland is an institutionally racism anti catholic and anti irish country. Anti Catholicism is rife, open and it’s so endemic they don’t even realise they are doing it.

Oh the evidence comes at all of you on a daily basis, you get all agitated, then vote for independence.

    Cognitive dissonance?

As for Peter, well didn’t he make a mess? He should have told the questioner that he wasn’t going to peddle to his agenda. But hey, celtic just want your money and to appease their masters. Get to the back of the bus please? Resume your natural place in scottish society.

  32. Loved the line in ‘Only an Excuse’ when interviewing secretary of the King William II, True lue RFC supporters club being a non sectarian club but “for some mysterious reason, a Catholic has never ever joined.”

  33. traditionalist88 on

    HamiltonTim

    Exactly.

After the trial period, the capacity of the stadium would theoretically increase as for every seat there is space for ~ 1.8 – 2 standing.

It is backward thinking from the authorities to block this, Celtic are all for it.

Hi HT – agree with that.

I think there would be a great demand; longer term, an area at each end would be good (me and Wee BGFC like to be at the end that Celtic are shooting into in the second half).

I’m not sure how the section would work – presumably on strictly allocated spaces as per current seating arrangements.

At away games – individual fitness allowing – the seat is only used at half time to give the old feet a wee rest.

Initially Celtic had grave reservations about it but credit where it’s due, they’re now fully behind it and of course it was the club not the supporters who put the proposal forward.

It’s a hot Tottie and I’m not convinced that it’ll happen until an English club make the changes first.
