New Balance for Celtic

860

New Balance take over from Nike this summer as Celtic’s official kit partner and main sponsor.  The US sportswear firm have along heritage in technical products, like running shoes, with less of a legacy in the leisurewear market than the likes of Nike, but this move, as well as a recent deal to partner Liverpool, indicates a strong commitment to become a major player in the football marketplace.

Both the Celtic and Liverpool contracts have been advertised as potentially record deals for the respective clubs, although each club declined to put a figure on the value, or the contract period in their official statements.  It’s likely that a significant part of the contract fee will depend on Champions League qualification.

Unconfirmed reports put the size of the deal at £29m, cash that other clubs have securitised off to a retailer.

Last call today for CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner, which takes place next Friday, 13 March, at the Kerrydale Suite.  After the dinner we have a Q&A with Packy Bonnar, Tommy Coyne, Joe Miller and Tom Boyd.  We have Archie Macpherson speaking about Jock Stein on the 50th anniversary of him becoming manager, and song from Patricia Ferns.

The object of the night is to raise money to build another school kitchen for Mary’s Meals in Malawi.  Kris Commons’ partner, Lisa Hague, will also join us.  She will be auctioning an incredible prize of a signed Ronny Deila jersey, signed Kris Commons boots and match hospitality in the Players’ Lounge for the Marie Curie Hospice in Glasgow.

Tickets will be posted out over the next few days, email me if you’re still looking, celticquicknews@gmail.com we’re closing the book tomorrow.

G’day to you sir. I think it’s a genuinely forward thinking proposal and the sooner it happens the better. It would certainly improve the atmosphere at home games.

Did something happen to you or Wee G at the game the other night? I’ve not been on much but saw a post in reference to you.

Possibly, but would highlight how backward our authorities are if it happens in England first – as if I’m not mistaken legislative changes would be required down there before it could happen, which is not the case up here.

The reasons for the knockbacks so far were pathetic and talk about halting progress!

Do you know what the latest state of play is?

Just went back and looked at that post from Auldheid as directed – good answer.

Repeated here, with thanks to Auldheid, for ease of reference – I note particularly the undertaking, unfortunately not being adhered to, that “…we have to speak out when we see racism or sectarianism being practised …”.

I am reminded of John Reid’s answer to the Celtic AGM in 2008 which I thought covered the issue pretty well even if some folk have a problem with the author, who managed to be disliked equally by both sides as NI Minister in the days leading up to the Good Friday agreement . (Great Hatred Little Room, a book by Jonathon Powell the civil servant working on the process gives a bit of insight into John Reid)

John Reid’s Statement at Celtic AGM 2008 when asked:

Why did you decide to speak out about ‘The Famine Song’ and is it important that the club make sure that our supporters protect the integrity of Celtic’s name?

I spoke out about it because this is a pretty vile song and I don’t think that any reasonable person who has read the words of this song can see it as anything other than a pretty vicious, racist song. It combines racism and sectarianism and goes beyond a lot of other things that we have seen in the past. That’s one of the reasons why I spoke out and I also come from Irish and Scottish descent myself, so that’s the main reason.

But there is a bigger and wider reason as well and that is, the nature of this club. We are proud of the fact that we have Scottish origins and Irish heritage and we are never going to deny that. We will defend that and that is not a cause for shame, it’s a cause for recognition and celebration. Indeed our very name ‘Celtic’ is about the unity of the Scottish and Irish people. It stands against those who would divide, discriminate and oppose those two entities. And because we start from that basis of the unity of peoples then we have always been open and inclusive as a club.

That’s why traditionally we have never discriminated. That’s why our board, our shareholders, our footballers and our footballing heroes come from all sorts of different backgrounds, religions, ethnic groups and do so internationally. That’s why I said last year that whatever differences we have when we come into this club we leave them at the door because we believe truly, in a Scotland that is one bit of many cultures and is way beyond now being Scots and Irish. That is our stance, therefore we have to speak out when we see racism or sectarianism being practised and of course, if we are going to do that we have to practise what we preach.

We have to be careful, from our own point of view and that’s why I am absolutely delighted that our fans in recent years have had accolades from the world football authorities, from the European football authorities and let me say when I point out that there may be a minority who are transgressing our own rules, that they are our own rules. I don’t know any Celtic fans who have been chanting racist slogans or anything of that nature, so I am not comparing like with like here. But I am saying that we have got to be whiter than white and that we have to explain to and educate everybody at this club, including that tiny minority which at away games sometimes leaves us exposed to those who would attempt to say that we are all the same. We aren’t all the same, but we have to make sure that that is evident to everybody. That’s the nature of Celtic Football Club.

  4. Traditionalist88,

You are correct, I have not been to an away game since Seville. However we were talking “safe standing” at Celtic Park.

It is only my opinion but it would be a retrograde step on what is generally acknowledged as one if not the most atmospheric stadiums in Europe when the competition and opposition are of a standard that encourages our support to make the effort.

I reitterate our focus should be on encouraging our big game support to make the effort for all games.

Again in my opinion Germany is not a valid comparison due to historical reasoning and pricing.

    HH to you.

  5. traditionalist88 on

    Greenpinata

The demand is there for standing at CP so the pricing comparison with Germany is irrelevant imo.

It would be cheaper to stand anyway and the stadium capacity would increase.

I dont see the problem with increasing choice for people? Its not a retrgograde step unless we allow overcrowding and allow everyone in with a carry out.

How often is CP one of the most atmospheric stadiums anyway? Its a bit of a myth now. Certainly when its full for big Euro games or even last Sunday vs Aberdeen…it was very good.

But on both occasions this was driven by a section, the Green Brigade, who stand and sing for 90mins.

Particularly vs Inter Milan at 0-2, when CP would have fell silent pre-Green Brigade.

    Morning All.

Once upon a time news outlets informed and educated.

Now they are 100% about generating attention and using that attention to then generate cash.

Looks like someone achieved their desired outcome yesterday.

I “quite” like Peter Lawwell. He does some things I don’t agree with but in the main I think he is competent. He is a Celtic fan too.

I don’t know Peter Smith. I don’t know his background, where he lives, what he looks like and I don’t care.

He works for an organisation that stopped being a serious news outlet decades ago.

Anyone old enough to remember the original ITV franchise auctions (instigated by our beloved Maggie) may recall that the STV franchise was not subject to any other challenging bid and the incumbents picked up the rights for a song.

Other English based franchises required HUGE bids just to win the contract. That money had to be recouped and several made the conscious decision to go down the “tabloid route” – quantity over quality.

    Whats my point?

Simple – STV, unencumbered by huge debt, had a once in a generation opportunity to build a quality independent broadcasting medium and blew it !

Other than CL games (now all produced in England) I haven’t watched a single programme on STV in 20 years.

My respectful advice to fellow Celts …

Turn off STV, Radio Clyde, Radio Shortbread. Walk away from the DR.

Paul B, Phil Mc, Gordon J and a whole host of others can fill your Celtic News bag.

The internet and C4 news can tell you what’s going in the world.

Sky & BT can provide you with live football.

C5, E4, More4, Universal etc etc can show all the US dramas and old movies anyone could ever want.

The mainstream is dying. Don’t give it any water.

Hi pal – no, nothing directly.

I just came on and had a rant at the foul-mouthed so-called Celtic supporters who roll up at Celtic park and do nothing other that look for opportunities to hurl foul-mouthed obscenities at Celtic players.

There are many in the vicinity around our seats – and I’m sure elsewhere.

You hardly hear a peep from them when Celtic are doing well, never encourage the team with a song or two – just sit and wait for any excuse to tell the players they are “useless c**ts”, “f**k of and die ya p***k, Stokes”, etc.

My point is the futility of that approach – it does nothing to help Celtic, it only hinders us and aids the opposition. Logically, they would be more comfortable, and better placed, in with Hearts and Sevco fans with whom they share many sentiments.

They clearly have and no respect for the efforts of our players, no desire to support the team and there is no evidence of any love for Celtic. Huns, but for an accident of birth.

Other than that – me and Wee BGFC are fine, and really looking forward to Sunday!

Oh and by the way – before I head off into the day and go and do something useful.

Dave King sat on a board of Directors who presided over something like £145 million of losses over the best part of a decade.

I would be scared shitless if he was the financial and compliance brains behind my club.

    Paul Murray did likewise.

The Judge who described him as a glib and shameless liar said many more things about him — the glib and shameless bit was the most complimentary!

He also branded him as arrogant, an ego maniac, obsessed with making money, delusional and someone who would say almost anything to get his way.

Whether or not he gets the keys to Ibrox is immaterial in my opinion.

What is material is where he or his colleagues manage to position the club they desire within the ranks of Scottish football ” in the medium to short term” of course as we all know that in the long term they believe that being at the top of the tree in Scottish football is their “rightful” place.

However, while we are on the topic of public statements PR and so on let me just paraphrase what Dave King actually said as a matter of fact last night:

“Anne Budge, Leeann Dempster, Stephen Thompson, Stewart Milne and Duncan Fraser, Steve Brown, Bill Colvin and everyone else involved in all the other football teams in Scotland — you are all a shower of tossers and it won’t take me long to ensure that The Rangers can whip your asses at every opportunity as they rightly should – and that is just how it is. Tough shit.

It might take a bit longer to catch Celtic – but eventually they will be in the same boat as you lot.

And yes I sat on the board that issued unlawful contracts to players, withheld them from the SFA and SPFL, ran up millions of pounds worth of debt and never paid it, avoided tax and all that just so that my team could whip your team for years and as I have been telling you all for years — We’ll be back!”

Never mind the message to Rangers fans that is the message to the rest of us.
