New club/same club. What if the boot was on the other foot?

754

I’ve dipped in and out of the online debate on Scottish football this week. Can’t believe how much has been written on the new club/same club debate. To what end?

If the boot was on the other foot, and Celtic were liquidated in 2012, my relationship with post-liquidation Celtic would be my business only. I’d have no interest in anyone else’s view on the status of Celtic. I am emotionally invested in Celtic, so would be happy to accept any ‘same club’ theory as fact, and would have no motivation in listening to any contrary view on the matter.

Similarly, under the same scenario, there’s not a ‘Rangers’ fan alive who would consider a scenario, with an insolvency practitioner considering whether to let newly formed Cevco 5088 use the name Celtic for their football team, and conclude: “Yip, that’s the same Celtic that started back in 1888, whether they get permission to call themselves Celtic or not”.

It’s lunacy and an insult to all our intelligence to suggest otherwise. I’ve yet to meet a ‘Rangers’ fan who could tell me with a straight face that they would be calling Celtic the same club under if the situation was reversed.  In fact, they have openly admitted they would be filling their boots on the subject.

The critical moment in Craig Whyte’s plan was achieved when Duff and Phelps were appointed as administrators, who would subsequently be in a position not to object to a newco calling itself Rangers, as Airdrieonians administrators and liquidators stopped Airdrie United using the name from 2002 until 2013.  Declining to object at Companies House to the use of name was a arbitrary act by an administrator, but it was critical to Whyte’s plan to sell tens of thousands of season tickets.

‘Rangers’ fans, however, can believe what they like, no matter what Uefa wrote. All other football fans will point to this huge liquidation event and hear no more on the matter.

You’re not going to convince one ‘Rangers’ fan, who believes they support the same club that was liquidated, that they are wrong. Why should they deny themselves the history and traditions of their club (OK, I’m at it here, but you know what I mean). Don’t waste your time, you’ll convince no one who doesn’t want to be convinced.

Similarly, if Newco Rangers win 51 of the next 100 titles, and Aberdeen win the other 49, when they recall their remarkable achievements, some Motherwell fan will pop up and say, “Aye, but you let our club die”.

For a century or more, if they survive that long, ‘Rangers’ will pitch up to games and hear “Glasgow Rangers, you let your club die”, up and down the country. Just as you’re wasting your time trying to convince a ‘Rangers’ fan who doesn’t want to be convinced otherwise, the liquidation of Rangers in 2012 will forever be marked when a club with that name takes the field. Forever. It’s not going to stop. Anywhere.

All efforts to expunge this notion from the nation’s consciousness have only raised awareness of the detail of the liquidation.

You and I have been talking about Cognitive Dissonance for a decade. It’s the phenomenon when an individual is caused discomfort by an apparent fact which runs contrary to a cherished belief. It’s what you’re seeing and reading in the sameco coverage, and could have been written for these great times to be a Celtic supporter.

Enjoy the game; serve moderate helpings of Cognitive Dissonance.

It looks like Doris Dumfries has won the battle for the No.1shirt for tomorrows game.H.H.

Joe, myself and a few others have posted this week that their was no battle.

  2. I don’t get all hyped up now when we meet this new team. Before 2012 each game would be on my mind for weeks in advance and it would get worse closer to each match. The Hun in work never even mentioned tomorrow’s game – I reckon he knows they could be pumped.

When we played Sevco in the cup semi-final they had a game plan and we didn’t. I am confident Brendan will have that sorted tomorrow.

I’ll be lucky if I see the last thirty minutes of the game live so to all of those going: enjoy the game and stay safe.

So according to your logic, I as a season ticket holder, should only be attending games against our nearest rivals for the league title. So that’s 2 games a season v Aberdeen if they are 2nd. Presumably if Aberdeen are then overtaken by Hearts, I get to see THEM now. Maybe I’ll get really lucky and 2nd place will change hands several times.

Seriously, all you people who keep telling us that you have chosen not to go to tomorrow’s game, fine. I get it. We get it rammed down our throats every day. But please don’t tell me I am validating Sevco or accepting cheating or whatever, by attending. I go to all home games and a handful of away games. I go to see Celtic, not the opposition.

Maybe that makes you a better person than the 50,000+ Celtic supporters who will be there tomorrow. I for one will just have to live with that.

PS. I just had a thought. Sevco ARE our closest challengers, for the time being anyway. How do I square that circle?

    Mammy Daddy.

    Auld Tam,

Please be kind enough to not apply your interpretation of what I meant and pass it off as my logic or thoughts.

Your understanding of my logic is limited by your thought processes; nothing at all to do with me.

I did not write that we should only attend matches v the second placed club. Indeed I did not mention we. I merely offered what I am doing in the present situation.

I did not write anything about you validating Sevco or cheating.

I certainly never mentioned anyone being better than anyone else regarding their support of Celtic. Certainly not me.

(The concept of the uber Celt, show us your creds, totally appals me).

As for Rangers being our closest challengers, well good luck with getting backers among the Celtic support for that one.

Now as I understand it, you have quite recently returned from Australia. Forgive me if I have the wrong person, ( one can get mixed up with differing monikers).

Were I in your shoes, having not had the pleasure of supporting Celtic live, for quite a long time I imagine, maybe my viewpoint may have differed.

I do not have view on your attendance tomorrow, or any other time.

Your journey is not my journey.

Please, with respect, do not assume that which you do not know regarding myself.

I hope you enjoy the spectacle in Paradise tomorrow.

    Summa,

Standing over the eagle putt, I will assume the roar is Sevconians, delighted that Collum has brought proceedings to an end and they are only 5-0 down.

    Hope you are well.

  5. Just posted a short while ago on the Green Brigade Forum:

For tomorrow’s derby the Green Brigade have prepared an ambitious display, different to any we have done before, and require the full participation of the Safe Standing section to make it a success.

There will be instructions attached to all spaces within Safe Standing and we ask that you read these and follow the instructions given, as well as following any other direction from the Green Brigade and capos.

So far the Safe Standing section has surpassed all expectation and is proving to be a real asset in encouraging more fans to sing and ultimately pushing on the team. We trust that tomorrow will be no different – making it clear how far ahead we are of our opponents both on and off the park.

    Agree with you there

IMO the board, if they allow the BIG LIE to pass without comment ,will be setting up a whole heap of trouble down the line .If sevco ever get their act together and win the spfl ,they will be crowing about 55 .

How will the board deal with that if they stay silent now and allow a COMPLETE FABRICATION to go unchallenged .

How long have we had to listen to the most successful team in the world boast from govan way .Do the board not want to achieve the same (although we would not be claiming world domination ) .

What about the most successful team in Scotland ,will we be able to boast such whilst saying nothing now .

Sadly I think they will bow to the need for the blue pound ,IMO the bean counters will have calculated that the loss of a few thousand of their own supporters is a more acceptable senario than the new club losing 75%of their support ,thus leaving no TV interest .

Believe me if we blow them out the water and the gullibles are told the truth about the dead club they will be like snaw aff a dyke .

I hope I am proved wrong tommorow and the club stand up for truth and justice

won’t be long till we find out

Nonsense. Can you actually see Brendan going for that?
