New club/same club. What if the boot was on the other foot?

754

I’ve dipped in and out of the online debate on Scottish football this week. Can’t believe how much has been written on the new club/same club debate. To what end?

If the boot was on the other foot, and Celtic were liquidated in 2012, my relationship with post-liquidation Celtic would be my business only. I’d have no interest in anyone else’s view on the status of Celtic. I am emotionally invested in Celtic, so would be happy to accept any ‘same club’ theory as fact, and would have no motivation in listening to any contrary view on the matter.

Similarly, under the same scenario, there’s not a ‘Rangers’ fan alive who would consider a scenario, with an insolvency practitioner considering whether to let newly formed Cevco 5088 use the name Celtic for their football team, and conclude: “Yip, that’s the same Celtic that started back in 1888, whether they get permission to call themselves Celtic or not”.

It’s lunacy and an insult to all our intelligence to suggest otherwise. I’ve yet to meet a ‘Rangers’ fan who could tell me with a straight face that they would be calling Celtic the same club under if the situation was reversed.  In fact, they have openly admitted they would be filling their boots on the subject.

The critical moment in Craig Whyte’s plan was achieved when Duff and Phelps were appointed as administrators, who would subsequently be in a position not to object to a newco calling itself Rangers, as Airdrieonians administrators and liquidators stopped Airdrie United using the name from 2002 until 2013.  Declining to object at Companies House to the use of name was a arbitrary act by an administrator, but it was critical to Whyte’s plan to sell tens of thousands of season tickets.

‘Rangers’ fans, however, can believe what they like, no matter what Uefa wrote. All other football fans will point to this huge liquidation event and hear no more on the matter.

You’re not going to convince one ‘Rangers’ fan, who believes they support the same club that was liquidated, that they are wrong. Why should they deny themselves the history and traditions of their club (OK, I’m at it here, but you know what I mean). Don’t waste your time, you’ll convince no one who doesn’t want to be convinced.

Similarly, if Newco Rangers win 51 of the next 100 titles, and Aberdeen win the other 49, when they recall their remarkable achievements, some Motherwell fan will pop up and say, “Aye, but you let our club die”.

For a century or more, if they survive that long, ‘Rangers’ will pitch up to games and hear “Glasgow Rangers, you let your club die”, up and down the country. Just as you’re wasting your time trying to convince a ‘Rangers’ fan who doesn’t want to be convinced otherwise, the liquidation of Rangers in 2012 will forever be marked when a club with that name takes the field. Forever. It’s not going to stop. Anywhere.

All efforts to expunge this notion from the nation’s consciousness have only raised awareness of the detail of the liquidation.

You and I have been talking about Cognitive Dissonance for a decade. It’s the phenomenon when an individual is caused discomfort by an apparent fact which runs contrary to a cherished belief. It’s what you’re seeing and reading in the sameco coverage, and could have been written for these great times to be a Celtic supporter.

Enjoy the game; serve moderate helpings of Cognitive Dissonance.

Tomorrow’s stage suits Quintana more than it suits Froome.- but time difference is 81 seconds !.Interesting wee clip on Italian TV re Quintana seeing Froome’s time today -He winced !.We’ll see !

I’m no expert, but I know Nairo is a king of the mountains type dude? and tomorrow is a mountain stage, but Froome doesn’t do as well in the big climbs. Is that about right?

Sipsini – enchante and thank you! :-)

We’re playing the equivalent of Killie or the Mothers tomorrow. A 3-0 win for the Bhoys will do me just fine.

As for Tuesday, I fear a drubbing, but will also plump for a [just about acceptable] 3-0 home win. :-(

Celtic PLC couldn’t care less what they are called they are only interested in the Old Firm bigot buck.

The only example of Cognitive Dissonance in this circus belongs to those in dim timmery who believe the Old firm is dead.

Opinion, I suppose but there is very little difference between Froome and Quintana in the mountains. In Sky, Froome has the better team but as individuals, there is not much in it. Both superb climbers.

I only care about the team.

The PLC are going along with BIG HUN LIE and the Hun agenda……They dont seem like Celtic supporters to me.

How many Celtic fans would lie, to uphold the Hun agenda.

    Cant be many.

But, the board have sold their souls to the Huns.

If PL cant tell the truth, imo he deserves nothing but contempt.

  9. Frankly? Who cares. Celtic have a game on Saturday. We want to win it.

No interest in the history or heritage of the opposition. Same every week actually.

Move on from this tiresome interest in the opposition….. whether south of the river or south of the border or south of the channel. It’s about Celtic…. That’s all

Cheers! Didn’t realise Froome was a a superb climber. I thought I’d seen him struggle a couple of times in the Tour de France, but my memory is crap! :)

  11. In terms of songs it’s hard to beat the last (ever) game against rangers at Celtic Park. As the teams left the pitch what played over the PA? The Three Degrees “When will I see you again?”

  12. Cognitive dissonance from supporters of Sevco is one thing. Cognitive dissonance, and downright lying by the SPFL, it’s chief exec and the FTSFA is another thing entirely, and that needs to be addressed, and no-one but the clubs can do that.

54 titles in 4 years, awarded by the authorities, not on sporting merit, plus cups etc, is just not acceptable.

Supporters can argue all day and night, but those who govern should govern, without fear or favour.

The shower in charge of our game are afraid and show great favour.

  17. Few wee articles for you all today.

I read earlier on here some debate as to whether they “got away with it.” In many ways, yes they did, but that couldn’t matter less, nor could the Survival Lie. The fact is, when Rangers was liquidated it died a basket case club, on its arse, from decades of living beyond its means.

Decades guys, okay? The club their fans followed and think they still do … it was an illusion, and whether the history continues or the continuity exists, the clock has been reset to zero.

They will never again be able to afford Laudrups or Flo’s.

Because they never could in the first place.

Whatever happens tomorrow, and I expect a big win, there’s a new reality they’re going to have to live with, and that’s that we’re the last remaining superpower in the Scottish game.

    http://thecelticblog.com/2016/09/blogs/for-90-minutes-tomorrow-celtic-will-force-sevco-to-confront-reality/?

And of course … that impacts on Warbo’s career prospects too … receding faster than my hairline.

If all that’s too heavy … tonight their fans have skirted sanity and sailed off into the wide blue.

We’re going to remember this as the “Newco Jesus” theory.

    Enjoy brothers and sisters :)

Be confident, be cool, and be careful.

  18. I hope that all our supporters going to and from the game tomorrow will do so in safety. It would be too much to think the Police Scotland will be interested in certain sectarian songs They will be more interested in what happens in the green corner.

I made up my mind when that new team were promoted to the Premier League that I would not be going to watch any game that they were playing because I believe those who have taken to support this new team have carried on the behaviour of those who followed another team that was liquidated.

Months ago I told PL this and added that I would nevertheless be interested in what statement re. tomorrow’s opposition would be printed in the Celtic program.

I have no problems with all of you who will attend tomorrow, but would just suggest that you all watch out for one another.

Personally, I dont care what the animals say …. and I care only slightly more what the SPFL say … but I do care what Celtic say …. and Celtic should be standing up for Celtic, its fans, and the truth.

If Aberdeen and bloody Paddy Power can speak the truth, why cant/dont Celtic?

I think it was Edmund Burke who said that ‘All it takes for the zombies to triumph is for good men to do nothing.’

No need for your wife to be worried about you; many a viewer tunes in for the scenery during the Tour.

Anyway, we had better leave the cycling alone for a while as I believe we have a rather important game tomorrow 0:-)

    Doc

I quite agree. We accept that fans are desperate for their team to remain alive so will believe anything that feeds that need. For the Authorities to promote it is a different matter altogether and needs to be challenged by the Clubs.

Not been on the blog during the week, but if anybody thinks this is just another game tomorrow is fair enough, just like the people who think they are the same club, all about opinions, but away from the Internet this week talking to family, friends, done the school run this morning ,taking to many going to the game, some worried about being over confident ??? am talking about armchair fans, season ticket holders and guys who follow Celtic everywhere…… I can assure the Celtic fans I know, and have known for many moons don’t talk about oldco/newco or what game is bigger tomorrow or Tuesday, again, not dissing anybody who feels the need to go on about the “fix” with the team we play tomorrow, I admire the Res 12 guys and in years to come the truth will out the cheats who broke every registration law going but not recognising the game tomorrow and Res12 are mainly on these pages, always read the article each day but not every post (or even read back most days) but P67 this week has actually acknowledged tomorrow more because if it was “just another game” he would be writing about our next game, my great niece is going to her first game of this type tomorrow, like many others going to any game, any football fan should be able to go to any game and get home back safely should be a given and not a worry…….

Aberdeen made a good start the other week, no history of playing them.
