No one wanted Celtic from Pot 4

1078

Let’s be honest with each other, there’s a bit of a leap between our European performances in recent seasons and the standards of Champions League football. My expectations for this season’s tournament hasn’t seen me check out accommodation options in Cardiff in May.

With that in mind, if we’re going to fall short, let’s do it against genuine quality opposition, some of the best players and tactically organised teams in the business. Barcelona, Manchester City (think Pep, but with more money) and Borussia Monchengladbach will bring this to Glasgow over the next few months.

Over our 15 year Champions League lifespan, Celtic surprise on the upside more often against better teams than against relative minnows. The biggest disappointments came in Scandinavia, not Iberia.

When the group stage finishes in December, we will faced enormous challenges. Players will have stretched themselves to lengths they didn’t know existed. What we know for sure, is that none of the other three teams in our group will have wanted Celtic from Pot 4. This is a hard draw for everyone.

Huge game tomorrow. Anything less than 100% and we’ll drop points. Enjoy it.

Macjay – the tricolour is a major part of the personal and collective identity of many Celtic supporters. It represents where the clubs founding community came from and the major connections to Ireland many still have.

Essentially, Celtic are an Irish club playing in Scotland but:

    Morning,all.

Big game for us today. A victory puts down a marker as we go into the first-yawn-international break of the season. A fair bit ahead of the pack after a difficult clutch of fixtures.

    Oh,and £30m better off anaw!

Anyway,I’ve mailed one or two fellow posters to ask them along for a few beers on 1st October in Glasgow. It’s usually a good chance to meet and greet fellow CQNers and have a laugh in a few locations.

I’ve never looked at any of their sites before – not interested – but, on the spur of the moment, I just had a look.

Jeezo – a cesspit of a place – don’t let your children near it!!! Language is truly shocking.

Here is the mildest one I could see, really backing his new club (and edited for the young and easily offended):

  5. An unusually frank comment by Tom English in his report of the Killie /New Rangers game:

” their supporters periodically screamed what is euphemistically called their ‘songbook’ – ‘The Billy Boys’ and more were trotted out “.

It would have been good to see a `When will the Authorities actually do something about this`accompaniment but I suppose Tom made has made a start.

Agreed about the Eire flag . No problem. Then there`s the Irish national Anthem.

If you`re a Jock , as I am , it`s reasonable to assume that the loyalty of Celtic supporters lies with Eire rather than Scotland. I don`t think many Jocks like that

I wish we could appeal to more of them than we do , thereby further isolating the huns with their sectarian songbook which was much in evidence in Killie last night.

Incidentally , he name of the Professor was Barclay.

    1. Who got barred from CQN last night?

    2. Have the new Huns boycotted BT Sport yet? Tough questions for warburton and scathing comments from Sutton will not sit well.

    3. Is Roberts fit today and does he take the right wing role from Forrest if he is?

  15. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

My apologies for my duff info about Kenny McLean not playing for the Dons today. Their captain, Ryan Jack , has a cartledge injury and is a doubt for them.

Our players ‘ confidence will be high after Tuesday’s game, it would be good if that confidence shows in our performance and result today with the added incentive of going top of the league if we win.

Scott Sinclair, James Forrest/Patrick Roberts , running at pace against Ash Taylor could be succesful for us.

Regards the flag, anthem, perceptions etc my view is that personal identity is very nuanced. Other people’s perceptions of that likewise. Diaspora communities contribute greatly to this. Even in the same families siblings will identify origin, place emphasis on different parts of their identity and so on differently.

Anyway enjoyed the pace of Boyd as he swept past the Hun defence :0) so far against the bottom clubs they have struggled big style. The BBC note that they have extended their led in the league, oh how the mob will lap that all up.

Does anyone have a spare ticket? I will pay full value just looking as if I will be tight for time to get to the ticket office pre match.

On this post, I agree with you 100%.

To debate our differences of opinion civilly,is the fundamental essence of a healthy blog.

Judge and evaluate the post , not the poster. IMO all posters are equal, their views ( providing they are within the accepted parameters that Paul 67 asks for ) should be treated accordingly.

Since last night we have been told about the despicable language and terminology on various Hun sites. No surprise there. Put simply this blog is head and shoulders above that. It is our collective responsibility to keep it that way.

As a side issue , I’m afraid the Saltire has been hijacked by a political party. They must be shown the error of their ways, the Saltire belongs to all sections of society.

Finally before pre game lubrication, we had an extremely civil and informative debate about Trolls yesterday. To follow that : Tune in for Trolls, coming to a cinema near you this November.
