No one wanted Celtic from Pot 4

1078

Let’s be honest with each other, there’s a bit of a leap between our European performances in recent seasons and the standards of Champions League football. My expectations for this season’s tournament hasn’t seen me check out accommodation options in Cardiff in May.

With that in mind, if we’re going to fall short, let’s do it against genuine quality opposition, some of the best players and tactically organised teams in the business. Barcelona, Manchester City (think Pep, but with more money) and Borussia Monchengladbach will bring this to Glasgow over the next few months.

Over our 15 year Champions League lifespan, Celtic surprise on the upside more often against better teams than against relative minnows. The biggest disappointments came in Scandinavia, not Iberia.

When the group stage finishes in December, we will faced enormous challenges. Players will have stretched themselves to lengths they didn’t know existed. What we know for sure, is that none of the other three teams in our group will have wanted Celtic from Pot 4. This is a hard draw for everyone.

Huge game tomorrow. Anything less than 100% and we’ll drop points. Enjoy it.

I like Sutton but I think the last two years he was pretty scathing, especially it showed him up when Ronny was going through a “purple patch” he actually said “oh well I might have been wrong” he is too slimey for me, not sure about the FA cup but the Lincoln fans wanted rid, if he done no bad why no other job offers ? I think Chris thought him and Henrik would have followed Ronny, every cloud and Brendan is our silver lining, Macjay I was going to ma kip but had to respond to that Clogher fella defo one of the good guys, and for all the expert malt drinkers I have just poured a wee cheeky Smirnoff loads of ice with American cream soda

Apart from the obvious tax cheating clubs i want all Scottish clubs to prosper, if you don’t mind me asking where do you think / hope County finish this season (3rd option is for them to win the league but not allowed that)

    Priority 4 – humiliate Sevco

    Hows that?

    Question to Gerry and Macjay.

Growing up most of mine were Celtic not winning…. It’s all about good grounding, in my opinion I wish more fans of other teams frequented the blog, enjoy your view (without our green glasses)

    Gerry

I’ve been on the move around our wee country since I was a bairn…always maintaining the family croft as a base as to where I belong. ( The family crofthouse in Sutherland I have a copy of the letter my gg grandfather wrote to the duke of sutherland asking permission to build it – in 1867.) So you know where I’m from. I’m afraid l’ll always have a green shaded color of glasses on looking across to how my Celtic cousins dealt with similar circumstances.

  12. Alasdair MacLean on

    But back to the football!

As in most clubs in Scotland we have our divides.

That’s how Scotland is..or was maybe.

Paul who runs this site has stated that we are a “polarised” country….meaning north pole or south pole. Diametrically opposed. One side or the other.

I’m afraid I have to agree with him.

For me, I was brought up well…meaning I was educated by a radical…my father.

Couldn’t be bothered with football, but a man who knew his history. Although a protestant by his Christian denomination, a man who had the utmost respect for the Catholic denomination of his religion.

He taught in a lot of schools in Glasgow….including the one which is a pub in Woodlands now.

Anyway – nice to get that off my chest!!

  13. Alasdair MacLean on

I think what I was trying to say was:

In most clubs in scotland the support is divided into huns and good guys……to varying degrees….

As a Scotsman , I would love to have good relations with all Scottish clubs except the sectarian clubs.

Can`t expect that when we travel Scotland demonstrating our allegiance to a different country.

Wish we would wave the Lion Rampant as well.

    Flegs,eh.

    Cannae get away from them.

    A horribly devisive subject…the flegs…sadly.

Lion Rampart – you know that technically you can be lifted for flying it? It is the ròyal standard. Only the queen has the right to “fly” it. I suspect you know that?

Anyway; The Union Jack? Millions of good people fought under that flag between 1939 and 1946. A symbol of justice and good. Must never be forgotten. Outside these years…..well, nothing is perfect – at this point you could talk till you die.

I like the St Andrews Cross, The Saltire, myself. Simple and true.

  17. Alisdair

Many Irish and Scots fought under the Union Jack for many years. I am proud to be Irish, Scottish and British.

As for the Tricolour of Eire – I think it is a great flag also. When I see the Celtic support at Victoris Park in Dingwall I have to say I think they are a fantastic spectacle – flying the flag of our Celtic cousins.

Could give them advice on the songs right enough…

The “political” ones come across as a bit dirgy…really need to revive, “The Glasgow Celtic Way”……very catchy from a distance and on the telly.

    Support appreciated

I believe in what I say on this blog and I say it not because I am a “hun” but precisely because I’m not.

The tripe that is written about DD, PL and the board and of course the latest flag fiasco are the two subjects that ‘get right up my nose’

However there are those who would wish this site to speak with one voice, one viewpoint – in that case they should lobby for it to become a members only site, with vetting and strict posting rules.

If that happened of course I would not participate, many others would do likewise -it would not be a blog in the true sense any longer.

I doubt that I have ever strongly disagreed with any of the editorial articles on CQN – where I have found/find reason to to tackle subjects is when certain views are posted by certain people and held to be unchallengeable truths – surely to God that is what this kind of forum is for?

There are long-standing contributors who believe that the blog belongs to them and feel their input and presence is more important than anyone else – that happens in all walks of life – change, different ideas and new people are always viewed with suspicion by those who are set in their ways.

The personal attacks are so boring and add no content whatsoever – I actually enjoy other peoples’ considered point of view and sometimes learn something from the exchange – I don’t want to agree with everyone and don’t want everyone to agree with me….what would be the point.

Really looking forward to the game today – the team owe us a performance after ‘putting us through the ringer’ on Tuesday – Cheers HH

    Yep . Bobby.

    Hae ma doots.

  27. Boydchencko looked almost embarrassed when he scored – when was the last time, if evet, he outstrpped any defence?

I reserve judgement on how good, or, how bad Sevco are until they come up against prospective top six opposition – one thing’s for sure, after we beat them at CP, their fixtuers will be much tougher than they have had up till then.

I think they will get a total of around 55 points – where that will place them, who knows – maybe fourth or fifth.

  28. Good morrow ye olde CQN.

Heading to Malones this afternoon pre-match to meet a few old friends in Celtic, and to enjoy the wisdom of TOHG.

Any fellow CQNers attending, give me a shout and we can say hello.

Very much looking forward to seeing our new Dutch goalkeeper make his debut and contribute to a convincing Celtic victory against an Aberdeen side who, in my opinion, flatter to deceive.

Top of the Premiership with a game in hand would be the perfect culmination of a great week for the Celts, leading into the international break and the chance to draw breath before blowing “the big hoose” down.

    Hail Hail

  29. You’ve put a shift in tonight Mats Nilloc. Good to see you still posting and even better talking about Football. I might not agree with you on the SNP but I think your just about right on the sevco points. They will get more than an unfair share of mibbee decisions giving them points but no way they will get above Hearts or Aberdeen. Saints and County will give them a run too. As it ever as Celtic will need to work hard against ten men defences but I am confident that BR will get the right mix of defence for Europe with attack in SPL. Here we go six in a row.

  30. Macjay – the tricolour is a major part of the personal and collective identity of many Celtic supporters. It represents where the clubs founding community came from and the major connections to Ireland many still have.

As I get older I’m less and less nationalist in outlook, more internationalist and left wing but oddly more and more pro independence for all nations. Smaller nations make for more genuine democracy you see – based on inclusion and participation.

I digress- I love the saltire, no issue with the lion rampant and I have certainly seen saltire sat Celtic games but i don’t see what they express about us in domestic competition or any other club for that matter – but I’ve no problem with it flying at football. I’d love the saltire to completely replace the union flag as the only official one flying in Scotland.

Alisdair – I always enjoy your contributions to this blog. And you hit the nail on the head about good guys and them. There are some nice guys who support them, accidents of birth as they say, but their active support is in need of serious re-education.

For the record I don’t like the rebel songs at away games. Best left for the pub and the party. I’ve always been of that view and so have many very active Irish republicans that I know.

And Macjay I’ve always said, like your professor of divinity that if I’d been knocking about at the start of the reformation I’d have joined in such was the level of abuses on the church at the time!!! My mammy would kill me if I told her that!

Big game today. Mon the hoops

  31. Good morning friends and Happy Matchday from a broken clouded sunny and dry East Kilbride.

There are ticket agents in Barcelona who supply tickets. They charge a premium, but aren’t extortionate. It’s a long time since I’ve used one so can’t recommend anyone in particular. I don’t know if you’ve booked a hotel but if you have they may be able to sort you out or put you in touch with an agent.
