  1. If we’re going to estimate prices I suspect ST holders will be in the region of £100, non-ST will be something like £125.

I base this on historical 3-match package prices, the highest being £97 (Rangers were also on the CL that season and charged £110) and the fact the board consider the match against TRFC to be worth £49 to non-ST.

  2. Philbhoy,

Really?? That’s a scandal. How can I afford it on top of the two 50 quid hun tickets!!!??

I blame Peter Bankier and his heated guttering so I do.

Many thanks for your answer. It is the best explanation yet for the term troll in many years on CQN.

IMO many people use the term in a lazy fashion, when they cannot be bothered to argue and debate the points rationally. It is the easy, indeed lazy option in many cases.

I still think this blog is the best Celtic blog by a country mile. One of its finest traits is its diversity. Imo, terms like calling Fellow Celtic fans a Cancer, parasites, cowards, fascists even loonies etc, etc have no place . Dissapointing to put it mildly.

I totally agree today’s blog should all be about Celtic, and how we are heading back to where we belong.

Again, many thanks for your excellent detailed reply.. Appreciated.

    Hail, Hail.

  4. Ok Ernie be like that I was just asking.

Not the first time I have posted crap and probably won’t be the last. I just felt the abuse of Tony Donnelly was going OTT no other agenda.

This explains the changes to the CL format. Disgraceful that 4 countries have 4 guaranteed entrants.

Beneath that, some positives for us:

The Champions qualifying route will remain (some papers are crediting Peter Lawwell for being one of the people to defend this) and the Country co-efficient will be changed so that a club stands on its own merits rather then inheriting a high co-efficient just because other clubs from that country did well/badly in the past.

Also a mention of this “Historical success in the competition will also be acknowledged in coefficient calculation (points for previous European titles with a weighted system for UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League titles)” Hope this goes back 50 years at least.

  8. No changes to the Champions format is good news – I’m guessing that means seem number of places set aside for the champions.

We’re also free from the consequences of other Scottish clubs not being able to win a game in Europe. We rely on ourselves alone and that’s just the way I like it.

  9. Owen –

    No problem.

It’s just that if you start off by declaring that a load of crap has been talked on a certain subject, then proceed to give your opinion on said subject, well . . . You know the rest.

  10. Really tough draw but what can we reasonably expect when we are in the last pot.The entire system is so driven by money that the sporting element is almost gone. We are past Champions, weshould be in the top pot , not treated like a Mickey Mouse outfit.

Now the EUFA powers that be have deemed to put the top 4 of the EPL straight in to the top tier. Rubbish.

If all the teams were not seeded a straight draw made , that would be fair.

    A pissed off KingLubo

  11. When last place in the EPL gets more money (£97m) than the CL winners (£83m) you know football is fecked.

Soon it’ll be franchise football in the style of NFL and other US sports

If the other 16 were champions only, the likes of Portugal,Russia,Turkey, might get mighty miffed. As someone pointed out earlier.

UEFA might have been better rethinking the international fortnights and scheduling on Tues/Wed and Fri/Sat. That would free up additional midweeks which could have been used for an expanded competition.

While I remember,I hope that a certain race tonight is won by Dalgleish, and not by Jardine or M Johnston.

I assume qualification for Celtic will be harder in the CL as there will be less teams coming through the qualifiers.

32 teams 16 from the top 4. Automatic qualification from France, Holland, Russia, Portugal, Ukraine and maybe a couple of others doesn’t leave much leeway for the rest of the leagues.

The reality is that Borussia Monchengladbach, Villareal and Man City all qualified; Roma had a mare and went out, so it didn’t make any real difference to our qualification chances as none were in the Champions route. However, taking Borussia, Villareal man City and Roma (sic) out of the no-champions route *may* make it a bit easier for the better teams to qualify. Time will tell.

I don’t think the other 16 will all be champions. I’m pretty sure the champions of France, Turkey, Russia and Holland etc already qualify automatically.

The champions from the smaller countries still play eachother through a champions route then not a lot has changed for Celtic. We won’t be up against a Lyon or Ajax to qualify for instance, these teams will go through the league play offs.

Today’s news doesn’t change a lot for Celtic imo. I could have been far worse had the wild cards been approved.

Damn right about the “wild cards”

Destroys any last notion of sporting integrity.

You are right; it adds another team each for England, Germany and Spain; and 2 for Italy. So 5 other champions (Turkey, Belgium etc.) will drop off the bottom and we most likely avoid them early on as seeds.

Until the full access list comes out in a few months, we are speculating.

  18. The top nations getting four places more or less happens now e.g. Man City through via play off 6-0 scoreline.

With the Champions’ route still open and with individual co -efficents etc, I do not see any great difference – we may even benefit slightly.

I am sure Peter would have been ‘batting’ hard for us – perhaps some reports might filter out.

The CL is where we must be, at least every other year – that is why getting a reputation as serial rule-breakers is not a clever thing to aspire to.

I will not be ‘standing up’ tomorrow – but with my season ticket, which I have upgraded throughout the last seventeen years, and my not unregular use of other facilities at CP – I ALWAYS stand up for Celtic FC and will ALWAYS call out those who use our name to further their own ends.

We are a football “club like no other” – not a political platform to be hi-jacked by minority sub-groups. HAIL HAIL.

May I be the first of many hundreds in here on CQN to congratulate PL on this great achievement, outstanding work, and I’v no doubt in my mind that it’s true, Peter Lawwell a great leader and doesent need flags to be waved on his actions, like a true Tim he just gets on with it, I’m humble to have meat the man, one of the biggest Celtic supporters I’v ever meat, take a bow Peter you are a leader of men, and we as Celtic supporters are proud and honered to have you, all hail P L.

    HAIL HAIL.

  20. Greenpinta,

No probs mate, actually it made me consider what it was I was objecting to.

Agree with you about this blog, best there is, thanks to the diversity of opinion.

I’m paranoid enough to be convinced that that is why we are ‘trolled’ by the dark forces – can’t have Timmy having something light years ahead of Facist Facist, Sons of Spew, etc.

“Ourselves alone” has a nice ring to it… :-)

  22. Re CL changes.

The 4 top teams in top 4 nations going straight into CL does not affect us because the Champions route remains in place and as only the champions of Scotland go into CL qualifiers, it makes no difference. It does mean that there will be only 1 place available to clubs in the non-champions route, so it will only hamper us where 2nd place in the SPL gains access to qualifiers.

The fact that the country co-efficient aspect of club co-efficient is being removed is a huge plus for us.

So I can only see good news in this, as far as Celtic is concerned, unless I am missing something, which won’t be a first.

    Well done Peter Lawwell.

  23. For nothing other than we’re back in conversation with the so called ‘big teams’. Well as we know, they will know they’re playing a ‘big team when they arrive at parkhead.

This year is a start, we’re back mixing it with the U.S/ Chinese/ Arab franchise clubs.

If the board pick up on this momentum and push us forward then we’ll improve year on year Ive know doubt… but its he board that worry me most – 1 step forward – 10 steps back.
