Not the end of the world if Rangers don’t survive! Too true

1216

I caught an online synopsis of Rangers’ owner Craig Whyte’s recent meeting with a group of the club’s fans last night.  The group report that Whyte hopes, “’Rangers Football Club Plc’ could survive any administration event but feels it would not be the end of the world if it didn’t.”

We can all agree, it sure wouldn’t be the end of the world if that particular entity didn’t survive, although I suspect Mr Whyte is alluding to the possibility of a new club emerging.  Celtic Quick News first raised the liquidation scenario back in October and explained a prepack route for Rangers Newco FC.  If a football company goes into liquidation a secured creditor, in Rangers case this would be Craig Whyte, can retain control of key assets, such as the stadium, but would not own a football club which was part of any league structure.

In Scotland any Newco FC would have to apply for membership of the Scottish Premier League or Scottish Football League.  A simple majority of the SPL board (three votes required) would be enough to vote a club into the SPL.  The board currently has representatives from Celtic, Dundee United, Motherwell and St Johnstone, as well as SPL chief exec, Neil Doncaster.  It is chaired by Ralph Topping, who only votes in the event of a stalemate.

If Rangers lose their tribunal against Her Majesty’s tax authorities (think of her underequipped soldiers), Celtic will not be the only club who will consider the commercial and competitive disadvantage they suffered while paying their taxes for the last 12 years, but they may be one of the few clubs that would survive without the sponsorship and TV income dependent on a club with the Rangers brand participating in the league.  Celtic would vote against allowing Rangers into the league but I can see zero chance of Dundee United, St Johnstone, Motherwell or Neil Doncaster doing the same.  If the board voted Newco FC into the league, the liquidation of Rangers would not be the end of the world; a football club would die but another could quickly emerge at the same location, selling tickets to the same people.

Opening positions on what sporting cost Newco FC should face for league entry were taken months ago when it was reported that Rangers would fight “tooth and nail” against a 25 point penalty on a Newco.  A 25 point penalty on the phoenix of a failed club after 12 seasons of financial benefit would be an insufferable insult.  This amounts to little more than a the loss of a single league title.  12 seasons of benefit should result in a 12 seasons of penury at the insolvency-event rate of 10 points per season.  Small cost for the enormous gift of a league place and a huge football franchise.  The SPL must also strike from the record any financially doped titles won by clubs still in existence or not.

Can you imagine if Peter Lawwell said, “It wouldn’t be the end of the world if Celtic PLC didn’t survive”!  There would be an impromptu media village outside Celtic Park that would rival the Obama inauguration in size.  Huge story sitting on a plate just waiting to be written up.  Or not.

I am not convinced the SPL board can make a decision. The rules indicate that league expansion or any club joining other than by promotion is a reserved matter.

Reserved matters have to be voted on by all members. Given that Rangers would no longer be a member then , depending on the timing of the insolvency event, there may only be 11 members.

The requirement is for an 83% majority. This is where it gets messy. 83% of 11 is 9.13. That means that 9 yes votes is not enough. 10 out of 11 will be needed.

We know Celtic will vote against automatic entry for the Newco, or at least will use the threat of a No vote for severe multi year penalties as the cost of joining. I would not be confident that every other club will vote yes. I think there have to be serious questions over whether Hibs, Aberdeen, and Hearts would vote yes. Self interest may persuade Dunfermline that it is there best chance of avoiding relegation.

the Key to this is to clarify that Newco applying to join the SPL is a reserved matter, and not a board vote. Celtic should make the position clear in a public statement. They don’t even need to refer to Rangers as there are doubts over more than one SPL clubs survival.

A clear statement from Celtic stating that they believe any new applicant to jin the SPL is a reserved after and would require the voting participation of all SPL member clubs, would be an important and politically sensible move

The El Allagui fella gave the G.A. a torrid time when Falkirk humped them in the League Cup.

However,John Sutton scored twelve goals for the Mothers last season, and is more of a known quantity of similar age.

I’m sure that he would jump at the chance to gain some trophies before his career comes to a close.

I don’t like all this talk of Commons,Paddy,Bangura all being linked with a move away, before we bring in any new ‘first choice’ striker. We are certainly missing the 20+ goal Paddy and Kris contributed last season.

We cannot simply rely on Stokes and Hooper to remain fit and ever-present for the duration of the campaign.

Our Manager should recall the situation last Winter, when injuries left us short of cover in central defence ,after O’Dea was allowed to depart early in the Transfer Window.

We might end up having to field Tony Watt and Victor up front,as a striking partnership.

I think your headline says it all “Not the end of the world if Rangers don’t survive! Too true”.

My perspective on this is that RFC realised that there was no hope of competing with us on a level playing field in 2001. Even at that time they had an enormous debt, but could rely on SDM and his friends at HBoS to find interesting ways of swapping debt for equity. They realised very early that model too was unsustainable because HBoS was answerable to shareholders, so they participated in the EBT scam.

I believe that they will never run their new business on the same good corporate governance as us and many others, not because they can’t, but because we do and they won’t want to do what we do. The world will be a much better place without their rotten festering culture. If the case goes against them, let them rot. If they get back in to the SPL with the minimal of fuss, let’s get out.

  7. Paul67,

    Excellent article,

“Opening positions on what sporting cost Newco FC should face for league entry were taken months ago when it was reported that Rangers would fight “tooth and nail” against a 25 point penalty on a Newco. If they are let back in, why would any of the clubs/chairmen not want exactly the above, everyone knows these SPL clubs are motivated by self interest so for them to suddenly bend over backwards and pander to hun/laptop loyal agendas would be one more prime example of just how utterly corrupt this League really is.

Keep the pressure on them Paul67. ;)

As to Ed Miliband’s now notorious twitter gaffe …

If we want serious politics in this country, serious political discourse as opposed to the ranting, raving crap we get now, we need to get away from fluff like this and focus on the bigger picture.

I will condemn Miliband for not supporting the strikes. I will condemn him for not following through on his early promise, becoming nothing more than a windsock for the opinions of forty strands of opinion. I utterly condemn him today for not slapping down rent-a-gub Murphy, who has undermined his position yet again, in a vainist hope this country has yet to see the last of the sleazy political upstart climbing his way to the top of the greasy pole by virtue of some X Factor quality … and quite what that is with Murphy no-one has ever adequately explained to me … at times it seems to border on the kind of things you hear in Messianic Cult’s …

What I will not do is climb upon the bandwagon that says because he looks odd, has an odd voice and comes across as bookish that he is unworthy of listening to our taking seriously. That is not politics. That is celebrity gone mad, and it’s how we’ve ended up with a PR man with no discernible skill as PM and the talking glove puppet who will say anything depending on who’s hand is up his rear end as Deputy.

Miliband may be a lousy politician and a lousy leader. Time will tell. But that so many have made up their minds already based on fluff – fluff like today – is the reason we’re deep in the mire right now. Because that’s what political discourse has become. Fluff. Disconnected from reality.

Celebrity Big Brother captures the mood very well. We have elevated, to the status of “celebrity”, a slapper … let’s not put too fine a point on it. We have given pubic license to a woman who’s only discernible achievement in life is destroying her own marriage and someone else’s. That’s the example our present culture is setting your daughters and grand-daughters, that they too can become famous merely for what crawls in and slinks out of their beds.

It stinks to high heaven, and of all the worst things that has happened in this country in the last 15 years, its steady creep into political life has easily, easily, been the worst and most destructive.

Miliband is not the leader I hoped he’d be, and wanted him to be. The fact I feel sorry for the poor sod, getting in the neck over crap like this, is reason enough; he does not look strong, indeed his weakness is evident to everyone in the arena, and I don’t see how he comes out of it.

For the country to be treating this as news, for them to be pretending it’s important or significant shows how far from the sane path our society has strayed.

    * I’ve mentioned this before on here a while back so here goes again.

I came over for New Year 1993 and paid a visit to CP for a tour at the time. We were dire then and scrambling to get Frank McAvennie back as we faced the mighty Clyde in a SC tie to be played at Hamilton.

Part of the tour, which was very good actually, was a visit to the boardroom with all the trophies including the “Big Cup”.

Unfortunately an emergency meeting had been called so we didnae get in, I jokingly asked if Liam Brady was getting the sugar lump.

When I got home that night it was on the news that Celtic had rejected the opportunity to join a “new” League which murray was going to run.

He had already requisitioned a new logo which if my memory serves me well was blue and an orangey shade of red.

With us rejecting this, the idea was dead in the water, I recall saying tae my da that we would pay for this.

Fast forward 14 months later and we are almost put out of the game by steptoe’s close friend.

So there is no rush to sell him, unless we get a realistic offer over £10M,reflecting his enhanced commercial value to the suitors.

However,I would only sell him this window if the transfer fee was used to bring in a quality striker now….no last minute sneaky deals by PL,just as the transfer window closes.Wouldn’t be surprised if Liverpool or Spurs come up with a suitable bid .

I’ve not been keeping up… Are MWD and Cultsbhoy ‘on’ for Peterhead ?

Could be the biggest thing since “Harry Met Sally” ?

PS. Kojo, have you perused the celticrumours site ? Worth a gander.

I do get what your saying. However, if the Huns were to go bust, then so will the rest of the SPL apart from us, then there will be no SPL so we can go join another league :)

Tbh, I couldn’t care less about anyother team in Scotland, like you say, join the Blue Square Premier now!

    Hail Hail!
