Olympiakos, Anderlecht or Besiktas, please

New Uefa seeding rules this year mean that teams in Champions League Pot 2 have a higher aggregate coefficient value than teams in Pot 1. So Barcelona (we’re bound to avoid them now they look a little lost), Atletico, PSG, Borussia Dortmund and the Manchester twins. Only Sevilla and Porto would provide some comfort, the latter, in particular.

From Pot 1 we could do worse than our old friends Spartak Moscow (18 coefficient points), although Shakhtar Donetsk, Benfica and Monaco would be decent draws.

As our primary objective is to remain in Europe after Christmas, the real battleground for Celtic is in Pot 3. I’d proverbially bite your hand off for Olympiakos, Anderlecht or Besiktas, even Basel would be acceptable. Prefer to avoid the Italians of Napoli and Roma, as well as Liverpool.

Remember, don’t go booking flights before the final confirmation of dates is concluded.

Hospitality for four on Saturday: meals, bar, Directors’ Box tickets, the lot!!

Celtic sponsor, Intelligent Car Leasing, have offered four full hospitality tickets for Saturday’s game against St Johnstone. You and three friends could benefit from a stunning pre-match meal in the Walfrid, halftime refreshments, as well as a complimentary bar before and after the game.

Yer bets are doing well these days.

    Good lad!

How much are you putting on us winning the group?

    …………………………..

I dunno mate…I’ll check the odds today.

I will also do my usual bet on The Celts gubbing the huns in all 4 SPL games, as I do most seasons, although I could only find one bookie last August who took my bet.

Funny enough, about 3 days later I went into the very same bookies ( Coral)…and the wee burd wasnt allowed to take the very same bet again, despite me telling her that her shop had taken the bet a few days earlier.

last season, I was denied winning that bet in 1-1 game at Celtic Park in March….cheatin feckin Refs.

  3. BMCUWP,

The reference that that hun made to ” Arnold” has me puzzled ?

If he means Arnold Clark….what the feck authority would he have to judge someone else’s billboard ?

Tony Blackburns dug…probably has more authority ?

I am confused. com by those hurtin huns, they speak with forked tongue.

    ’88….and .89…..’1990 ?

    i think I love her ?

I was trying to educate her about John Travolta and Saturday Night Fever and JT’s dancing etc, and how it inspired a lot of Glesga Bhoys to dance better.

  9. imo…Any team coming to Celtic Park for the opening Group match will be delighted to go away with a point.

imo, PSG will be no different, and will settle for a draw right now ?

Me…I predict that Celtic will get off to a flyer and collect ALL 3 points v PSG.

    its good to be Celtic.

I am also looking forward to match v St Johnstone, with an excellent Celtic display and yet another 3 points.

Could we have brought out the piece from the ND RM meeting at a more inconvenient time ,where it is buried under all the CL focus ,it’s hard to see how .

Although I should have known better ,I must admit to being shocked at what was said by ND and RM .

For them to have the audacity to sit across from Celtic supporters reps and expect them to swallow that total crock of s**t has me spitting nails .

I knew the game here was corrupt but to concoct a fairy tale of such magnitude is beyond the pale .

It seems to me that the more these corrupt clowns try to make up ways of excusing their corruption the more they open the fans eyes to how DEEP it runs .

Surely Paddy and Coetze aren’t our only additions?

A right back would have been one of my priorities but for the development of Tony Ralston. I still think we need cover at centre half and left full back.

On top of that a centre forward that can cover or develop behind Griffiths and Dembele. Paying for a short loan there would make sense or bringing in a player for buttons and developing them. Is it worth £1m quid to cover Griff and Dembele?

I suppose if/ when VVD goes to Liverpool Peter Lawwell will be happy with a net spend close to 0 on transfer fees.

  14. I suppose if/ when VVD goes to Liverpool Peter Lawwell will be happy with a net spend close to 0 on transfer fees.

Well then that would be him doing his job properly, you’d rather the club be running at a loss? Am just asking?

  15. Because I’m a bit of a geek and also because Bert Kassies is secretly my hero, for the last couple of seasons I have kept a spreadsheet with projections and little made up scenarios regarding our UEFA coefficient – particularly with the UCL coefficient change that will come into effect for the 2018/19 season.

Through this I have come to the following conclusion:

Celtic should write to UEFA and SFA to ask that they stop sending any other Scottish teams than Celtic to play in UEFA competitions as their bottle-merchantry is dragging down our coefficient in the Country Rankings.

Celtic have amassed 8.5 points thus far in 2017/18 but because every other Scottish entrant is chuffing useless, our Country Coefficient for this season is dragged down to an average of 3. To move this average up and actually make a material difference to the rankings Celtic would need to pretty much win all of their group games.

If we have any hope of even playing one less qualifier in future seasons then other Scottish clubs need to learn how to pass a ball, or just not take part…

I’m sure everyone in Scottish football will agree with my assessment.

    Thanks…

Doncaster and McKenzie should be made aware, as if they weren’t already, of the FTT decision narrative on Mr Red. This is very relevant to the – it was just a disagreement on tax due argument-

Certainly, we considered that Mr Red was defensive in his evidence to us. He 25 accepted that there had been delays in his providing certain information to HMRC. His position, perhaps, was somewhat invidious inasmuch as he was charged with the day-to-day management of a scheme devised and directed by another party, Messrs Baxendale Walker (none of whose representatives gave evidence.) One aspect of his evidence which disturbed us was his meeting with Mrs Crimson on the eve of 30 her giving evidence. Having collected her at Edinburgh Airport it seems that there was some discussion about Trust matters and he passed to her for her consideration that evening certain extra documents including company minutes. (These were produced as late extra documents by the Taxpayers’ Counsel and Advisors for

    scrutiny by the Tribunal.)

Inspector 1 became involved in investigating the tax affairs of the Murray Group, having taken over the enquiry from a colleague. In particular the administration of the Group’s Remuneration Trust came under scrutiny. On his instructions the determinations of liability under PAYE and the decisions in respect of

15 NIC liability were issued in respect of certain “benefits” considered to have arisen via the Trust structure. It had been observed that the amounts contributed to the Trust substantially exceeded the amounts paid and taxed as bonuses. The Murray Group had not been forthcoming in providing documentation about payment of bonuses, and the Trustee (not unnaturally in our view) refused to divulge confidential information.

20 The response of the Murray Group to HMRC about the Trust was essentially that it was independently managed. Inspector 1 explained, however, that he viewed the Trust’s management as a “sham”. There had been a change of Trustee in circumstances which aroused HMRC’s suspicions.

    89. Further documentation had been obtained by HMRC via an enquiry conducted 25 by the City of London Police. This related to a number of football clubs, and was not restricted to Rangers FC. Inspector 1 had noted also information obtained about the development at Bel Azur. Inspector 1 referred also to his notes of the interview with Mr Grey, the solicitor and football agent. This note had been prepared by him from contemporaneous notes and his recollections. His colleague, a Mr Luton, had 30 approved its terms. (We note the contrasting evidence on this point by Mr Grey at para 34). Inspector 1 noted also that documentary information had been obtained

from the SFA. ( Yes the SFA!- HMRC obtained information from the SFA- did the SFA alert Rangers or enquire with Rangers why the SFA asked for this ?)

Mr Red was an incredible witness. It would appear that he was obstructive in his conduct during the HMRC’s enquiry, and obscurantist in the way he gave evidence on what could be called a ‘virtual reality’, one that conformed to his own understanding of how the trust scheme should have functioned to stay within the bounds of legitimacy as a tax-saving scheme. It would also appear that he tried to influence Mrs Crimson (and possibly Mr Scarlet) in their giving of evidence.

The auditors of Rangers did not express an opinion on the efficacy of the trust scheme and relied on the information given to them by the management; there appeared to be a lack of candour from the management towards the auditors over the remuneration trust payments, for example, in respect of the nature of Mr Purple’s loan advanced on the occasion of his employment being terminated.

It would appear that the side-letters were actively concealed in the course of HMRC’s investigation because they answered the central question raised by the enquiry regarding the basis of determining the amounts to be contributed to the main Trust and the sub-trusts. The side-letters also evidence the existence of some form of contractual agreement between the employer and the employees

    84. Mr Scarlet was the taxpayers’ final witness. We think it appropriate to comment at this stage on their witnesses’ credibility and reliability. While we make specific comment on the evidence of Mr Red and Mrs Crimson, we found the other witnesses generally credible and reliable. The football players, their agents and the

5 various professional advisors all gave frank accounts and were straightforward in their manner. In his submissions Mr Thomson made detailed criticisms of the evidence given by the Appellants’ executives. Their Witness Statements had been drafted by Counsel and this (quite innocently) might have tended to suggest a degree of rehearsal. However, HMRC’s enquiry has been conducted over an extended period.

10 Further, it is a matter of public knowledge that HMRC and also certain UK Police Authorities have been investigating the affairs of other football clubs. This background may well have contributed to the culture of defensiveness which to varying degrees seemed to affect the Appellants’ officers’ testimony before the Tribunal and, perhaps, earlier dealings with HMRC. Mr Black gave a frank account

15 of his entrepreneurial role within the Group. He said – and we accept – that by and large he made only decisions in principle and delegated the detailed implementation to others. He gave a straightforward factual account of the development at Bel Azur. Mr Thomson made particular criticisms of also Mr Scarlet’s and Mr Magenta’s evidence about the last-minute settlement of the negotiation of the players’ bonus for the UEFA competition in 2005/06. We are hesitant to draw any sinister conclusion from this section of the evidence. We can accept that the club captain, who was elected by the players as their representative, had negotiated strenuously on their behalf until the proverbial “last minute”.

  24. Interesting point about the Anderlecht bribery case.

Originally the Belgian FA were given the evidence in 1992 by a criminal who had got hold of the info but they said it had no powers to investigate corruption (say this really does sound familiar) and so they referred it to UEFA.

UEFA were given the evidence, but sat on it for 4 years. When it all came to public attention 1997 via a criminal court case, UEFA claimed they couldn’t do anything to punish Anderlecht – it happened too long ago (hmm, sounds vaguely familiar too). However, they eventually took the decision to ban Anderlecht from Europe for one year (seems like a pretty light punishment to me).

  25. Anderlecht’s stadium still bears the name of the dude that bribed the Spanish referee.

The example I gave was of a guy who could take no pleasure from a massive Celtic victory. He was a guy who was only happy when complaining, the type of guy who sucks all the positivity out of wherever he was.

Now, how can you highlight such behaviour and be counter-accused of whining? I am bemused more than upset by such displays.

There is always a time and place for constructive criticism of the team and club. That is the hallmark of the “restless improver” type of person. On the other hand, destructive criticism, designed to impress those around you as to how perceptive you are, is the behaviour of a “Stones in the Road” kind of guy i.e. he makes your walk harder.

Let me repeat again, his defining action:- He left the game with 20 minutes to go because we were heading for a huge win and there was no market for what he was selling. Unfortunatelu, he will return regularly this season and will be no wiser or insightful but, when we do eventually slip up, even a draw, he will take some satisfaction that he was right about Celtic.

  31. Seems like it’s not just Paddy Roberts who doesn’t want to go to Girona, Jason Denayer isn’t keen either. After spending last season battling relegation at Sunderland he doesn’t fancy the same backs to the wall script with La Ligas newly promoted Girona. Both seem to want to play for a team challenging for honours, a team in the CL in a large friendly city with a large noisy support. Makes sense to me Celtic. HH

  32. Marrakesh Express on

Bayern have dished out many serious hammerings in the CL over the last few years. That’s my main worry going into this group. They can smell blood early and overrun teams playing a very wide system with Robben and Ribbery well supported by overlapping full backs. They can just as easily go through the middle with lethal strikers Muller and Lewandowski. BR has his work cut out here and I don’t envy him. He could do worse than study one or two Bundesliga teams’ matches v Bayern in the Alliance last season, like Hoffenheim and Mainz who earned draws
