Olympiakos, Anderlecht or Besiktas, please

New Uefa seeding rules this year mean that teams in Champions League Pot 2 have a higher aggregate coefficient value than teams in Pot 1. So Barcelona (we’re bound to avoid them now they look a little lost), Atletico, PSG, Borussia Dortmund and the Manchester twins. Only Sevilla and Porto would provide some comfort, the latter, in particular.

From Pot 1 we could do worse than our old friends Spartak Moscow (18 coefficient points), although Shakhtar Donetsk, Benfica and Monaco would be decent draws.

As our primary objective is to remain in Europe after Christmas, the real battleground for Celtic is in Pot 3. I’d proverbially bite your hand off for Olympiakos, Anderlecht or Besiktas, even Basel would be acceptable. Prefer to avoid the Italians of Napoli and Roma, as well as Liverpool.

Remember, don’t go booking flights before the final confirmation of dates is concluded.

Hospitality for four on Saturday: meals, bar, Directors’ Box tickets, the lot!!

Celtic sponsor, Intelligent Car Leasing, have offered four full hospitality tickets for Saturday’s game against St Johnstone. You and three friends could benefit from a stunning pre-match meal in the Walfrid, halftime refreshments, as well as a complimentary bar before and after the game.

You will also watch the game from the Directors’ Box. In collaboration with this raffle, we are raising money for Mary’s Meals. Over 3,000 children in Malawi and Liberia eat each school day in a kitchen supported by Celtic Quick News readers. You can donate a minimum of £5 here.

To win, email your MyDonate confirmation to me, celticquicknews@gmail.com with the answer to this question IN THE SUBJECT LINE:

How many Champions League qualifying games have Celtic played in the Astana Arena before Tuesday?

Other emails with the correct answer will also be considered. Competition closes at 14:00 THIS AFTERNOON (i.e. minutes away from publication time of this article). You need to be able to collect your tickets in Glasgow on Friday. Please ensure you leave reliable contact information on your email. Good luck!

Remember telling my old man that they were technically much better but being surprised how much fitter, stronger and faster they were than us. 3-0 flattered us.

We have improved immensely since then but so have they.

Confident we can beat any team on our day at paradise with the ground shaking from the noise of the faithful.

We can beat anybody at Celtic Park, and i mean anybody.

Over the years we have cuffed most of the big names.

Although i do think it would be wise to buy some players. We cannot go into CL with Bitton and Ajer as our CH pairing, no way.

Good Morning Bhoys it seems there will be no incoming transfers today it seems Paddy Roberts talks continue we are as usual for Celtic going to bring in any new players at the end of the window. So our next big game is tomorrow against the league leaders and I think it will be a good game with a narrow hoops win. H.H.

Hmmmm – Bayern, Anderlecht and a French team. A distinctly 2003-04 feel about this group…..

Realistically a shoot-out with Anderlecht for third, but I think we can pick up a point or two against the big two.

Saw Bayern in a pre-season tourney and they were awful, although they were missing some of their big guns.

Would have liked Lahm to have still been playing to see how KT would have done against him. Could have been a good education for him.

Anyway – this is where we want to be so let’s enjoy it!

Thats right, we lost 1-0 away.

About 10 of us sat the whole day in a bar on the Champs Elysee. It was Paris fashion week, and the place was swarming with models and the whole entourage.Great fun.Getting our pics with the models, and ogling like hell.6 quid a pint back then. The Gendarmes picked us all up at the Eiffel Tower, and took us straight to the Stadium. The PSG fans were fighting with each other.Strange fans.Divided straight down the middle.Politics ,I think. One half occupy one side, and vice versa. The fans were magnificent that night, the PSG fans loved it,and would not leave the Stadium, swapping scarves, singing “Roll with it”with us.Great trip.

Wee funny one to go with that. The hotel we were in had a full bus of Irish fans over,so we asked them for a lift to the game.No problem, pile on.They wanted to visit the Eiffel Tower to see it.By the time we had got through the Paris traffic,it was around 6,so me and my mates were in a panic. The Irish, not a bit.away they all went sightseeing.about 6,45 the Gendarmes stopped and loaded us into the van.At half time right across from were all the Celtic fans were,we saw a load being brought in,and moved into seats. It was the Irish mob.Missed the first half,sightseeing.Nutters.

PSG went down to 10 men for the last 20 minutes of the Toulouse game, with the score at 2-1. That’s Neymar just settling in, 2 goals, 2 assists, won a penalty, some outrageous skills.

Few Irish bhoys that I drink with are good ones for ordering another pint in the Gallowgate 15mins before kick off and expecting to be there for the start of the game! Learned my lesson and leave them to their own devices. Planting carry outs in strategic spots outside the ground was another one – under traffic cones and the like. Inventive!

Thought this would be of interest according to UEFA website (Last updated: Monday 13 February 2017 seemingly)

    Club coefficient system

A new system for the club coefficients: clubs are judged on their own records (deletion of the country share for individual club coefficient unless that coefficient is lower than 20% of the association’s coefficient).

Be more interesting when this is all confirmed for next year’s competition ..

  20. glendalystonsils on

I for one am quite happy to wait for Paddy, and think the board are playing it sensibly. My feeling (based on nothing concrete) is that , if we were happy with a one season loan, Paddy would already be in tomorrows lineup.

If we can sign him on a 3/4 year deal, it will have been worth the wait.

  21. Certainly outraged the BT pundit, Chris Perry, co -commentating, who complained, in all seriousness, that there was no need for Neymar to embarrass his fellow-professionals, as he left one guy heading in the opposite direction as he flicked the ball from between both feet over his opponent’s head.

I remember thinking the same when Jinky was giving defenders ‘twisted blood’, Chris.

” Haw, stoap bein’ so good at fitba’, wee man, yer embarrassin’ big Davy!”

  22. 4 points could easily see us in 3rd place which has to be the realistic goal, but we cannot underestimate Anderlecht. They have some top players and are on a similar level, in a better league.

  23. Forget Paddy buy another striker no brainer, Hayes and Miller, can play on the wing ,and at the back, which Paddy wasn’t up to at times,

  24. Saw PSG play against Monaco in Monaco last season. Monaco of course were ‘in their pomp’ as Big Ron used to say. However I’m not sure that there will be such a great comparison between the way PSG laid themselves out last year vrs this year. PSG have Neymar (and may just have Mbappe), so they will have pace to burn, mostly coming from the left, I guess, and as ZZ Top said, they have legs and they know how to use them. I worry that Lustig – fine player though he is – will be exposed. But PSG has always been less than the sum of its parts, other than the first game against Barca last year. I’m hopeful that the atmosphere at Celtic Park will scare them if we get an early goal, we’ll see.

I think that it’s a great draw. We’re not going to win the CL, and while we want to take it as far as we can, I’d rather go out having seen Celtic go toe-to-toe with Bayern and PSG than against a lesser team.
