One man’s trauma and vulnerabilities

219

We don’t owe our modern greats anything, all of them were suitably compensated for services rendered, but one suffered more than most for wearing green and white hoops.  For what he endured to play for and manage Celtic, Neil Lennon will always receive my respect and gratitude.

He became the most racially abused person in Scotland’s history.  Even his treatment by his peers at court is a stain on a nation that lies to itself about its collective moral code with great conviction.

Oh, you didn’t know about the vulnerabilities?  Well, he has only written about and discussed them for the best part of a decade.  There can be no doubt these wounds were exposed during 2020.  When he needed support, he found levels of hostility without precedent, from some, because of his race, from others, because of football results.

The man at the centre of the storm will not care where you to fit these two groups into an ethical hierarchy, but I suspect I know the actions of which caused the most emotional trauma.  Still, football results, and all that.  Just because we can find a neighbour below us on the ethical scale, does not make us ethical.

    No, I meant comparing.

Then your point makes no sense whatsoever.

  2. Part of the reason for this was practical: the Nazis were fighting the British. Another factor was desperation: by 1940 de Valera’s government was clamping down further on the IRA, interning and even executing its members. With little chance of overthrowing de Valera and even less of driving the British out of Northern Ireland, the Nazis offered the IRA its only hope of success. But there were also elements within the IRA attracted by Nazi ideology and by 1940 some IRA publications were parroting anti-Semitic propaganda. One, War News, even claimed that de Valera’s government was dominated by ‘Jews and Freemasons’ who were becoming the ‘new owners of Ireland.’ IRA members now cooperated with former members of the fascist Blueshirts in a variety of small pro-German organizations in Dublin and elsewhere. During 1940 the IRA even approached the former Blueshirt leader Eoin O’Duffy (once a sworn enemy of their organisation) and offered him a leadership position. But German espionage in Ireland came to naught and by 1941 the likelihood of German forces landing in Ireland receded. News of Russell’s fate took a long-time to reach the IRA and amid leadership turmoil the organisation turned further in on itself and was effectively crushed by 1944. In the internment camps and prisons both pro-Nazi and anti-Fascist factions emerged, while many activists dropped out, disillusioned.

Fortunately, how the IRA would have behaved had German forces actually landed in Ireland remains a hypotethical, if contentious, question. Across Europe nationalist organisations cooperated with the Nazis for a variety of reasons. Whether such cooperation was inspired by apolitical pragmatism or by sympathy for Nazism in the end would have mattered little: the results were always tragic. There is little evidence that our experience would have been any different.

Answer my points, you coward. Blair and Starmer? Otherwise stop boring people. You also turn people off with your arrogance and condescension.

  4. “His treatment by his peers at court is a stain on a nation that lies to itself about its collective moral code with great conviction”.

    ———

There is no collective moral code in Scotland. There has always been a piece of Ulster poisoning daily life and livelihoods of the minority for over one hundred years.

This was seized upon by Salmond & the SNP as they recognised their chance of a pathway to power after devolution. Their strategy was to ‘turn’ enough Labour voters. The Catholic/Irish/Celtic (CIC) vote was targeted. The Ulster terminology of Unionist & Nationalist was deliberately corrupted and used by the Nats to split the Labour vote. It worked, and c350k were conned into voting SNP – a party who in all its eighty plus years in existence has never espoused, or, enacted, any significant policies to help the “working class’. Indeed most of these ‘converts’ could not live without Labour’s Tax Credits, nor, other well known benefits. I could fill two A4 sheets on both sides with the rights and benefits won by a Labour Party although only infrequently in power. That 350k underpins the SNPcult at Holyrood, Westminster and in local councils.

There is talk of Donaldson and the SNP’s past support for the Nazis – we don’t need to look that far back. Salmond has sought links to Russia via his broadcasting and regularly uses his platform to undermine the UK. Sturgeon boasted of Scotland’s separate ‘billions of pounds deal’ with China, which turned out to be more SNP claptrap. The EU flag is still flown at Holyrood although we are now non-members. In truth the SNP will throw its lot in with anyone that they perceive can harm the UK and England in particular. Nationalism has no moral code and needs only ‘hate figures’ to flourish.

For so many years of being a Celtic supporter, I thought our “kind’ could do no wrong and the Ibrox lot and their hangers-on were the embodiment of evil.

That is no longer the case. A certain section, albeit smaller in number, of our side have ‘caught up’. We have factions inside the body of our fan base every bit as objectionable as those on the ‘other side’. In fact both sides mimic one another in their actions. Perhaps it’s social media – perhaps it’s the CyberNat influence – in all probability it is grotesque mixture of both.

  6. So it’s Cheatin’ who is the ref for The Game?

    Sadly predictable…………..

  7. The criticism Neil took online over the football was too much. I hope my own calls for him to walk away were reasonable and my recollection is they were couched in ‘thanks for the memories’ but the emotions of the October through January period got the better of many of us so I stand open to correction in my own contributions. I’m not sure if the club did enough to protect him either Paul. I hope he wasn’t kept in place after October to take the public rap – and to be fair to the guy he never hid while some of his bosses perhaps did.

Also I saw the video. My primary thought beyond concern for Neil was that I don’t know many drinking people, myself included, that haven’t been in that state. He or she who is without sin and all that…..

I thank the stars I wasn’t in my drinking pomp during the days of mobile phone cameras. And more recently when I thought my days of serious excess were behind me and I’d learned y lessons, I have woken up hoping no one had captured images of me trying to walk in straight lines. People in glass houses…..

The most pathetic person here is the guy that filmed it and posted it. The culture we have now of people reaching for phones when they see fights, accidents, drunks, drug addicts I the street etc is as depressing as it is disgusting. If a persons first reaction on seeing a human in a state of danger or potential harm is to film it then they really need to re assess their values. They, more than the guy who had too much drink, should be dealing with the feelings of shame and regret that no doubt fill our Neil’s mind today (if he is anything like me after a swall!)

Neill must not be allowed to leave the warm embrace of the Celtic family. Things weren’t great this season. But he gave us some great days as manager and player. And he never ran even in the midst of bullets and bombs. Ronnie Simpson stood for the tories and he is still a celtic legend for God sakes! Where are our values? 😁

  13. Bike owners, looking for some help. I’m looking to buy a 2 bike carrier for a 2009 mini Cooper, not as easy as I’d hoped! Any thoughts on roof versus rear carrier? Any experience with that model of car? I keep seeing negative reviews of rear carriers, even the expensive ones. And some suggestions that fitting roof bars to my model of mini is tricky, needs drilling etc.

    Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

They invaded the soccer world, the art market and even Silicon Valley. Their names appear on the early investments of big tech companies and the walls of public museums. Like Rupert Murdoch, too, they invested heavily in media, buying TV stations, websites, PR companies and digital electioneering operations. They also invested heavily both in Britain leaving the EU and the presidency of Donald Trump.

I had a similar problem with a Z4, unfortunately the solution was horrifically expensive so I gave up on it. I did get a tow bar fitted to my other car and use that for a bike rack, it works really well and dead simple to put on and take off but depending on the car the tow bar itself can be expensive.

I have seen mini’s with tow bar fitted.

“We don’t owe our modern greats anything, all of them were suitably compensated for services rendered”

    I’d disagree.

We owe them the right not to think we OWN them just because

    a) they earn a fortune. AND

    b) Football has become a 24/7 industry

  18. I stand behind Glen Kamara in that I (in common with the rest of us) abhor racism in all its forms. However, the Sevs as a club being the self-proclaimed embodiment of moral good is a notion which quickly drowns in it’s own absurdity. Let’s hope the Celtic travelling party are not met with vile racist/sectarian abuse when they alight the bus on Sunday. The Polis should aim to up their game too.

The last time they stood right next to those perpetrating such nauseating abuse but, despite that, were still unable to bring those responsible to justice. They should watch some old Columbo episodes and familiarize themselves with basic investigative techniques.

  19. ROOFES BAN IS FOR THE ASSAULT ON THE KEEPER. UEFA ARE STILL INVESTIGATING THE RACISM & THE TUNNEL FRACAS, POR CIERTO.

The assault was in the tunnel – Kamara will be worried about the police investigation now

Roofe getting 4 games seems light to me

Interestingly, Kudela ban is all UEFA games so he would miss games at Euro 2020(sic) . Initially, that looks a bad thing but he will eat up his 9 games faster is they are included

  26. TIMMY7_NOTED, thanks for the reply, appreciate it. Agree that tow bar looks best but sadly don’t have one on my car. More expense!

Ondřej Kúdela admitted making an unsporting comment, EUFA clearly believed the statements from Glen Kamara and team-mate Bongani Zungu that the comment was more than unsporting it had racist undertones, you have to give Sevco credit here the hiring of a publicity-hungry lawyer turning it into a major racist incident across the UK media was a masterstroke, it also deflected from the serious charge of Kamara assault

Slavia Prague alleged that Glen Kamara in front of Gerrard, UEFA observer, and Prague officials that Kamara assaulted Ondřej Kúdela by punching him, at a meeting to resolve the issue of the comment, Kamara also tried to carry on the assault but ran into the dressing room with Gerrard, for that UEFA gave Kamara a 3 match ban for assault, clearly EUFA believed he did assault the Slavia Prague player will Police Scotland take action ? I’ve known players get a ban for a year for that kind of nonsense, he got away lightly

Roofe was given a 4 match ban after EUFA revisited one of the most dangerous tackles I have seen anywhere, that was horrific, again he got off away with it, the severity of the potential to severe injury merited a ban in months

Connor Goldson admitted to in the national media

Connor Goldson insists he “despises” Slavia Prague’s players after the alleged racial abuse of Glen Kamara.

And the Rangers defender admitted he and his teammates waited in the tunnel to confront their opponents after the game, but they didn’t appear.

Rangers have also been fined 9,000 euros for ‘the improper conduct of the team’ during the defeat at Ibrox which must be paid within 90 days.

A paltry fine for intimidation, bullying, and threatening violence after a match akin to a pub team

Sevco have new PR people who have upped the off-field ante considerably, their statecraft in dealing with SFA and EUFA are streets ahead of us, we can only hope that Dominic McKay will reinvigorate the club across all levels
