Partick Thistle 0-2 Celtic

172

Kris Commons’ goal was outrageous. It wasn’t so much a chance as a hopeful ball into the box. Kris jumped to cushion the ball on his chest, from them, Thistle had no chance. He let the ball drop before scooping it over the onrushing goalkeeper into the net.

No one else at Celtic could have scored this goal. Kris possesses the rarest of talents: the ability to create a chance out of nothing, and he’s better than anyone else we’ve got at converting chances too.

After playing 88 minutes yesterday Kris will be feeling it this morning as he’s a few weeks behind his team-mates as a result of his broken toe injury. It’s a big ask for him to be ready for the Champions League play-off round but I’d make an exception for him.

Loved Tom Rogic’s goal.

Add VVD to Victor, Fraser, Hooper, Ki, Wison, & Matthews – is that not the best part of £50 million ‘up the drain’?

Liverpool, Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea, all with zillions to spend have had so many multi-million players who did not fit in – Balotelli (twice) – De Maria – De Bruyne etc etc etc, and yet you ‘put the boot in’ to Celtic who have to survive in a ‘pub’ league on a fraction of their money AND with no Sugar Daddy to pick-up the debt.

I’m not so certain about that TCR. Cliftonville got a lot of money these past few years, and don’t seem to be reinventing any of it back into the team.

Scottish football takes a slagging due to us winning every year but back in the 80s we stuck 5 past St Mirren, Thistle etc all the time. The league is way better these days

    ————————————————————————————————————————————

If you think playing against players who cannot get a game in English non- league teams is ‘better these days’, then obviously you must be still at school.

Hamilton, ICT, St Johnstone, Partick, Kilmarnock , Ross County and Dundee, would all be fighting relegation in the Conference Vanarama Vanaroo – none of them can muster four thousands fans and are on a par with the likes of Dover Athletic, Braintree Town, Guiseley, Southport and Gateshead.

This is a pub league we play in and, if we don’t get out in the next ten years, we will also be a pub team.

    How the mighty have fallen…………………………

The Australian cricket team has applied for political asylum this afternoon, claiming they face severe mental and physical abuse if they return to their home country.

Lawyers representing the team have claimed that the abuse they will face if returned home cannot be expressed in the English Language, largely because that’s not what Australians actually speak.

The Home Office is reported to be taking the application extremely seriously after spending about five minutes reading their fellow countrymen’s comments on Twitter.

“My God, the abuse,” a clearly shaken Home Office spokesman told us. “Some of it is frankly indescribable.”

“To be honest some of it is incomprehensible, as well. What the heck is ‘a pack of drongoes worse than a wombat’s arse and a dead dingoes donger of runs?’” He asked.

“Whatever it is, it sounds pretty serious to us.”

Members of the team fear serious reprisals from fellow Australians, and are reported to be hiding out in the dressing room under armed guard.

Meanwhile migrants at Sangatte are reported to have formed a cricket team and are currently challenging all comers in the hope it’ll boost their chances

    macjay,

Do you seriously think that the players are good enough?

Here are a couple of my thoughts, I watched last night shortly after our AGM here in the West, Partick Thistle were pretty awful and we failed consistently to make any decent chances against them. We dominated the midfield for thirty minutes but we don’t have the guile to open up even a duff team with a killer pass. The defence had as close to a day off as I can remember.

The club is 20-25k short in the stands, some of it down to lack of competition and in my opinion, most of it down to lack of entertainment. Unfortunately the fare on display is too often not good to watch. For years we have always had entertainers in the Hoops but they are few and far between these days. It’s those types that bring crowds in.

Going back to last year, I agree to some extent that Ronnie got it wrong in the home tie against Maribor but the complete mess that the custodians made of Neil Lennon leaving and Ronnie arriving with blunt tools in his toolbox, should have left more than Ronnie under pressure. The lack of any thought out transition from Lennon to Deila should have been subject to a stern internal review. It might have happened but as with all things Celtic, we the fans and shareholders will never know.

That situation in my opinion, is unacceptable.

  17. MacJay and Antipodean

a great many relevant points between the pair of yees!

if/when sevco get back into the top division they will be hungry (as we were under fergus) we should not be complacent just because we can win a hunless league.

If our strategy is to sell our best players on an ongoing basis to bring in cash then obviously bringing in cash is vital, and if bringing in cash is vital CL qualification is vital.

    Question.

When Henrik was at Celic park we paid him a good salary (i would say it was damn near the “going rate”. and we enjoyed the pleasure and privilege of his company for quite a few years. (in my opinion those were the years that bankrupted the huns, the years when we took the CL cash for a while instead of them)

Now as i mentioned we enjoyed the Henrik years…. Nowadays do you think we would

    a) pay him the going rate and hope to fill the stadium to pay his wages

    b) sell him to the first EPL bidder

Deep down we all know the answer……….

  18. Macjay

José Mário dos Santos Mourinho Félix was a rookie in 2003.

Experience is entirely relative and of no real value in ascertaining who will be a good fit for Celtic.

Our own experience with managers should have shown us that.

We are shopping for managers in the same place we are shopping for players so we have to recruit smart and not with a fat cheque book and copious cvs.

We have recruited smartly with RD and if he ever leaves us it will be to manage one of the top European sides.

If you have a successful template for managing players and other resources successfully, you will continue to work to the template and tweek it as required for each new club.

Problems for RD last year began with the abrupt departure of NFL when we had no plan for any transition.

That transition issue just shouldn’t happen at a club like Celtic. IMHO

Squad rotation? Is that what Ronny is doing?

What`s wrong with a ” settled team ” ? It used to be what we aspired to. Changes forced usually by injury.

Has the game changed so much that squad rotation is now seen to be necessary.

Fads and trends come and go.Do you remember when “work rate ” was the god? Rather than individual skills and entertainment.

  28. The Green Man

I’d take the 1-0 result now if offered it, mainly because of the prevention of the away goal.

A poster last week did some analysis on being drawn at home in the first leg and emphasised how important it was to keep a clean sheet in that tie as it made a significant difference to the chances of qualifying.

If we can nick one over there, they’d need 3, and the fact that they would be aware of this would inhibit them to some extent when attacking. Even if we were 2 down, we’d still have plenty of hope of qualifying, if there was still time left in the match at that stage.

I acknowledge however that scoring over there will be no easy matter the way things are in the striking department at that level especially.

  30. BEATBHOY

I don’t think we are at a level, where we can play on such slim margins….We need to score a few at home, because we don’t have the striking talent to score many away…..and not forgetting, we don’t have a good record of keeping clean sheets away from home.

Our best chance imo….is if we blow them away 3-0 at home……don’t forget Malmo’s last result…..getting beat 2-0 in first leg, but winning 3-0 in the second.

We are not good enough to rely solely on our defence.

I see mention in the nightshift of Ronny being a ‘rookie’ when he joined Celtic . This chimes with the STV preview of the season ahead referring to Ronny Deila as being a ‘fledging’ in terms of his career as a manager.

While it’s true that, at 39 years old, Ronny is relatively young, I thought (and think) this was rather dismissive of Norwegian football, Ronny having been manager of Stromsgodset for 6 years, and assistant for 2 years prior to that. Despite being a similar age, his experience is significantly greater than Ferguson’s when he joined Aberdeen (aged 37, 4 years experience), and Mourinho’s at Porto (aged 39, 2 years).

Please note: I’m not suggesting that Ronny is ‘the new Jose’, merely that getting a job at a top club aged 38 with 6 years experience behind you is by no means unusual.

Moreover, 6 years as a football manager in a top league anywhere is substantially more long-lived than the average managerial career.

A recent analysis of the relative strengths of Scottish and Norwegian football looked at the results of each nation’s clubs in Europe over the past 5 years, excluding the strongest team in each league – in this case Celtic and Rosenborg.

During that time, and excluding the 2 strongest teams, Scottish clubs have earned 4 UEFA coefficient points. In the same period, Norwegian clubs have earned 10.

It’s merely a fact, and reflects a number of variables, but it does evidence the view that the standard of football n Norway is significantly better than the prevailing parochial opinion, and that winning the Norwegian league with Stromsgodset may be considerably more challenging for a football manager than winning the Scottish title with Celtic.

I don’t subscribe to the ‘rookie’ tag. I find it disrespectful and dismissive of football in Norway, and based on little more than ill-informed prejudice. The chap’s manager of Celtic. He should be judged on his results, not age, his experience, or his nationality. He was considered highly enough to be appointed. Over to Ronny to show that he has the wherewithal to perform.
