Penalty box possession and shots from outside the area

543

You thought St Mirren were a hard watch?  Livingston won three and drew three of their last six games but did not manage the majority of possession in any of those outings.  Incredibly, they beat Dundee (by four goals), Dundee United and Aberdeen with an average of 39% possession.

If they dug in against the team at the bottom of the league, they will only leave their defensive third to have a shot on goal against the league leaders on Sunday (expect them to shoot on sight).

There will be no surprises.  High crosses into the box will be successfully defended.  There will be no space in front of goal, marking will be skintight, the defensive line will be straight.  The pitch will be terrible, passing and control will be difficult – if you have a ticket, please be forgiving.

If you needed a reason to be concerned more than Celtic’s historical results against Livi, their recent form is impressive.  Livingston have collected the joint second highest points total from their last five games, just two behind Celtic.

The first objective will be to get possession inside their box.  We have the players to make any defender nervous at making a rash challenge with a penalty on the line.  Shots from the edge of the area will be important.  A ricochet did us no harm against St Mirren, against a packed defence, another is very possible.

Teams who win leagues win games like this.  Three points for Celtic here will go a long way to achieving that objective.

Sevco must be desperate. Foul count went from 4-12 to 8-12 in last 5 minutes. 4 Sevco fouls in a row! Almost unheard of.

Your fault then…..I was just about to take the blame for predicting 0-0.

  3. Difficult to tell from one look but my gut was it was offside. Bottom line is if we continue to take care of business it won’t matter a jot and they’ve hardly put a dent in the goal difference.

  4. 5 extra minutes at the hundome.

Hoping Aberdeen see 2-0 as no different to 1-0 and go for it….

  5. When you consider the type of ball played at the time…..a lace up leather bound bladder, these corner “goals” must have been exceptional. Bending the ball before Brazilians had ever thought about it….Cheeky Charlie Tully.

But then about 7 minutes into the second half, Celtic won a corner kick. Across trotted Tully to take it. In these days, linesmen were a little more officious than now (no-one bothers all that much if the ball is ever so slightly outside the arc nowadays) and Mr Tully and the linesman exchanged a few words. Tully took the corner kick, the ball drifted high in the air and floated gently into the net. He had scored directly from a corner kick – a rare phenomenon, so rare that some members of the crowd wondered whether it was legal. It was indeed legal – or in this case it would have been, if he had not been “flagged” by the linesman who was still not happy about where the ball had been placed. So it had to be a retake!

The Celtic fans were furious at being denied a foothold in the tie, especially with such a piece of brilliance. But Tully stayed calm, muttered a few words to members of the crowd behind him, then gave the ball to the linesman and asked him to place it for him! He then, very politely, asked a policeman to stand back a little and took the corner for the second time. The ball followed an identical course and drifted once again gently into the net. This time the linesman’s flag stayed down and he ran up the park giving a goal, Tully performed a peculiar little dance, the crowd went berserk with joy and a crush barrier collapsed under the strain.

  6. Win by two goals tomorrow and we stretch the lead. That should be the absolute minimum we’re accepting.

  7. I hope we go to Livingston tomorrow with a game plan of intent. I fear we show Livingston to much respect. Sure it’s a shit pitch and sure we’re up against a stifling, play on the break team, but I’d rather we just “went for it”

5-4 victory will suit me fine

  8. I think we’re sometimes guilty of playing to negate the oppositions style rather than playing to our own style. Let’s go batter them

  9. Start of the season we played fast flowing 1-2 touch football. We didn’t care how the opposition played. Let’s get back to that style of play. Let’s utilise Maedas style of play…through balls from our own half and early crosses for Gia.

    Job’s a good ‘un

Toney takes almost no run up at penalties – but looks at the goalkeeper rather than the ball before he hits it.

Takes a lot of nerve – but never misses.

  11. Our fast flowing football at the start of the season had many an opposition defender say we were hard to cope with. More recently our passing across the pitch has seriously slowed us down. We need our players to take a few more gambles. Lately we’ve played it to safe

  12. Souness doing his bit for Ukraine…..by wearing blue and yellow ribbons on his lapel…that’ll definitely help

    Ernies back!

I hear the new Labour flag has artillery on it.

With a butcher’s apron of course.

I’m hearing orangism is the new socialism.

  14. Ernie. You never actually answered anything there.

If any of the pro union parties put up a candidate from the orange order would you vote for them ?

I am getting mixed messages from your posts.

Is it ok to vote an orangeman in because they preserve the union but be afraid if there is independence because the orange people will have more influence and there would have to be a plan to manage them ?

I forget asking you things is propoganda .

  15. God just looked at the league table there , top of the pile The Glasgow Celtic game less played and still top on 70 points . Livingstone on 37 points take that in Celtic .

I see this candidature more as a reflection of the reality of life in Scotland than of the state of the Labour Party.

It is Scotland’s problem. It would be worse in an independent Scotland.

You don’t seem to be able to grasp that.

Any word on when the referendum’s going to be?

  17. I had no real expectations going into this Season with what we were left with, to be in this current situation, is quite unbelievable.

Won a very large amount today from a 6-team accumulator.

Going into 90 minutes I had 5 out of 6.

Edinburgh City scored at Albion Rovers in the 94th minute to win the bet.

Felt like a Celtic stoppage time winner.

A topic on which I am happy to defer to your greater experience and expertise.

Are you suggesting there isn’t going to be a referendum?

  21. Ernie you right I can’t grasp anything you put forward as an argument. So labour party selection of an orngeman is a Scottish problem.

You didn’t tell if you would vote for someone like that.

Ernie loves the orange 🍊 order.

Can’t imagine what mental gymnastics you are capable of to avoid criticising the Labour Party about this decision.

    Absolutely shameless.
