Pot 4, decline of the Spanish empire

1020

A cursory look at our fellow pot 4 Champions League teams shows the extent of the challenge.  Six of the eight teams lost: Steaua Bucharest (3-0), Austrian Vienna (0-1), Celtic (2-0), Real Sociedad (0-2), Plzen (0-3), Anderlecht (2-0).

Copenhagen got one of the better results of the night, a 1-1 draw at home to Italian champions, Juventus, while Napoli, who split Juve and Milan in the Italian league last season, but are still a pot 4 team, recorded the only bottom tier win, a 2-1 victory over last season’s finalists, Borussia Dortmund.

Napoli are in a different category than the rest but Celtic are in with a decent chance of out-performing others from pot 4.

Sociedad’s home reversal to Shakhter Donetsk, who are going through a rebuilding process was a shock, but Valencia’s 0-3 Europa League defeat to Swansea indicates a worrying scenario for Spanish football below the uber-indebted Barca and Real Madrid.  As a general rule, anything which undermines one of the economically powerful football nations should be welcomed by those disenfranchised by the size of their TV market (that’s us).

Shakhtar Karagandy put in a credible performance before going down 2-1 in Greece, a far better showing than Elfsborg’s 4-0 collapse in Salzburg.  Best of luck to the Kazaks.

I’ve been going to the football long enough to remember black players being booed whenever they touched the ball.  The phenomenon seemed to arrive here in the late 70s and faded around a decade later, although such is human nature I don’t think complacency is appropriate.  Homophobia is a different matter.

‘Out’ gay footballers are so rare I don’t know what the reaction would be at a match but the crowd-bullying phenomenon which can exist in the game makes any minority vulnerable.  The first step is to explain to the hard-of-thinking what they are doing, and the error of their ways.

Can rainbow coloured laces change the world?  Stonewall have distributed rainbow coloured laces to every player in the UK, asking them to wear them this weekend.  We’ll not see the WAGs acronym become WAGSABAH overnight but it feels like an appropriate, colourful, first step.

Keep reaching for that rainbow, Celtic.

I have to say I agree with your viewpoint on the way the Scottish Football Association have handled this scandal.

And that’s what it is – it’s a scandal. But I would take it a bit further.

Not only have the Scottish Football Association responsible for proving without a shadow of a doubt, that they are not willing or not fit to govern the game in an impartial manner, without fear or favour – but by their own actions, they have allowed the mob to rule Scottish Football.

They have allowed lies like “holding companies” to be accepted as truth – they have allowed innuendo and confusion to take the place of truth and clarity.

And in doing so they have created a blue monster that bites at anyone who dares speak the truth about Rangers.

Now we are witnessing a situation where journalists are being attacked because they dared to say the truth about Rangers. It could all be sorted so easily if the Scottish Football Association stated, unequivocally – that in football terms,

    • The club was the company and vice versa.

    • Transferring a membership does not mean transferring a club.

    • There was no holding company involved in the liquidation.

    • Charles Green did not buy the “club”

When Charles Green said the SPL kicked them out, no-one in Scottish Football hit back to state the obvious – they weren’t kicked out. They went bust. Gone. Kaput.

They had a ridiculous situation at Tannadice in the Scottish Cup when Charles Green played the victim card by saying Dundee UTD treated his club badly “last time”. Er excuse me Charles, there was no last time for you – you just formed a new club, remember?

We have gone from a situation where everyone in Scottish football knew what was in store when a CVA was rejected – it meant the end of Rangers FC.

Now fast forward a year, we’ve had no explanation of the justification of how a club that began as Sevco could pretend to be a club that just went bust. And there will be none either.

Every football fan is simply being told by the Scottish Football Association:

“Forget truth, forget integrity, forget liquidation – this is what we’re doing – we watched a club overspend to the extent it went bust but we’re doing everything we can to pretend it never really happened.

We’re not telling you why we can justify this, we’re not telling you how many rules this goes against, it’s really none of your business anyway. We’re in charge and if we want to pretend Rangers never went bust then that’s what we’ll do.”

Except this would never have happened to Dunfermline or Hearts. It didn’t happen to Airdrie. There isn’t a hope in hell it would’ve happened to Celtic in 94.

Now why is this allowed to happen?

    • Is it because the Scottish Football Association does not want to lose one of the biggest clubs in Scotland? So they’ll simply blag this for a few years until no-one is talking about it anymore?

    • Is it because the Scottish Football Association are actually physically scared of the repercussions of telling the truth about Rangers? (they did go bust you know)

    • Is it because there are too many “Rangers” men involved in or with the Scottish Football Association who are doing all they can to “protect the institution” even though it goes against every rule in the book?

Whatever the reason, like iceman, I could not justify giving one more penny to the corruption that is Scottish Football. And never will again as long as we are forced to accept lies just to keep the mob happy as well as the people in suits happy (and I include those in the Celtic boardroom)

The next time you hear a cry of “We are the people” from The Rangers fans – think about it for a minute – they might actually be right. Has the mob mentality won?

Because threats and intimidation from the mob and a complete disregard for rules, integrity and transparency (one of Stewart Regan’s favourite words) have combined to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt – Scottish football is rotten to the core.

Fans had the chance to change it – but the momentum has gone and Regan & Ogilvie are still in nice cushy jobs. Not to mention Doncaster – the man who said “same club, different owners”. Oh really Neil? Can we all do that trick – spend £100m and just let it disappear through liquidation but pretend it was the company, not the club?

And to think the SFA actually tried to bribe everyone into putting the new Rangers right into the SPL.

The next time there is a “Dougie Dougie” moment – where you have paid your money into the game and you watch the referee blatantly cheat – don’t complain. No really, don’t complain.

By paying into Scottish football now, you are accepting cheating on a much higher scale.

    Rules are for mugs.

Threats, intimidation, lies & a total disregard for the actual rules are what Scottish Football is all about.

  2. fstb

He has been playing in central defence (I think). I saw him being at fault for one goal but being good in other games where I saw only the highlights.

The season is too young to make any kind of reasoned judgement, even though some of us have written off some Celts already.

Jackson is being tested in a team that will give him plenty of practice in defence. Lewis Toshney got the same with Dundee last year and, though it is hard to look really good in a struggling team, it is valuable experience and will test if you have the right stuff.

The loanee who has impressed me most is young McGregor down at Notts County. He is showing high energy levels and is not letting his head go down in a struggling team.

  3. FSTB

Jackson has had 3 or 4 starts at Killie, mainly at Centre Back and not Centre Mid. Not setting the heather on fire, I hear, but gaining first team experience

  4. Hmm… the link from Charlotte to the 5 way agreement has had the document removed “at the request of Field Fisher Waterhouse LLP”. A legal development?

  5. A stor mo chroi

I think it would be a mistake to see the 5 way agreement as anything other than a grave error of judgement by all the parties involved, but that does not mean all the parties agreed to it individually but expressed their concerns, a vote was taken and fear won the day.

The argument and counter argument was commercial consequences v sporting integrity and I think the former played a major part in the thinking leading up to that document.

However that does not mean that Celtic dismissed or did not argue for the latter in the lead up. As Rangers crumbled I put on my PLC hat and with the knowledge that football as an industry is interdependent my thinking was what would be acceptable to Celtic supporters to keep Rangers in the top tier. Some form of penalty was an absolute must but would it be sufficient to satisfy the demands of our support?

There was debate on CQN and I think I might even have floated ideas of what might be acceptable. Testing the water from a purely personal exercise in listening and learning.

I remember being surprised at the strength of feeling against any top tier settlement but it was not just because it was Rangers who would have stayed up but more how strong the integrity argument was owned by the support.

I realised then that no way would a top tier settlement be accepted on integrity grounds, but I think it took a while for the strength of feeling to get back to the SPL clubs, ALL of them through their supporters. So whilst the SPL might have agreed in isolation from their support base on a commercial led argument, supporters changed their minds.

Now perhaps Celtic with only one vote on the SPL pushed the integrity line but saw the futility of disagreeing or perhaps they voted against the 5 way , but one thing I am sure of is that once the strength of feeling for integrity was known Celtic pushed it at every opportunity.

I was an integrity advocate and on one of my cyberspace wanderings found Platini’s Christmas message for 2011.

I sent it to Celtic and that afternoon it turned up on CQN where the UEFA message on integrity got out there and by being on CQN many Celtic supporters saw it as indicative of Celtic’s position. I most certainly did.

Does that mean all is hunky dory in terms of Board motivations? Not necessarily as the UEFA licence and some other stuff on LNS have still to play out. However I think we can be guided by PL’s statement that Celtic will do what is best for Celtic and we have little alternative to trust that the guys doing a pretty decent job in that regard and knowing stuff we do not know, will keep to that promise.

    Time will tell.

Thanks bhoys for the feedback on Jackson ,I am surprised to hear he is being deployed at CB as to me the bhoy had a cool head and great composure and vision in the midfield role .

Can’t say I noticed his tackling ability though so maybe the coaches at killie have a better handle on it .

I must say though I think he has a lot more to offer a team if given the midfield berth

The most important thing this season is to win the treble and qualify for the CL.

CL qualification and the financial benefits have been achieved which has been the primary objective. I would take third place and a Europa League victory — the final in Turin at Juventus stadium has some fate about it.
