Pure, athletic, Thatcherism

935

It’s all politics.  Not actual politics, in the strict definition of the word, but clubs’ dealings with the SPFL and SFA is mostly about politically manoeuvring in the direction to win your argument.

Experienced political operators will tell you not to fight the same people on too many points; pick the important areas to win and take a few defeats on the chin.  Box the SPFL into a corner by not charging season ticket holders for entry into play-off matches, and you’re onto a sure win.  But all SPFL clubs are members of the SFA.

They all like being given their place.  If I wanted something important from the SFA, like exemption from the rule prohibiting directors of a liquidated club from subsequently becoming a club director, I’d concentrate on that and ask politely for permission to let season ticket holders into games.

But I realise there are different types of political animal.  The consensus political animal is effective in certain times, then there are those who have a self-righteous tone to rules.  It’s their way or the highway.  To paraphrase Bob Shankly, pure, athletic, Thatcherism.  Britain wasn’t ready for Thatcherism 30 years ago.  She won in 1979 and lost lots of votes second time around in ’83, but the Labour vote split.  The 80s were lean.  For some.

Scottish football is in for a period where a self-righteous entity will muster its forces.  The media coverage will reflect what we saw in politics in the 80s.  The consensus operators must stand firm and unite.

I think Milliband sounded the death knell for his Party tonight with his ridiculous statement about him rather not being in power than coming to an agreement with another party, notably the SNP.

Well if the Tories get re-elected it will be payback time for Scotland, for our perceived treachery in “trying to break up the union.” A union that only matters when it is to Westminster’s benefit.

So all you No voters can look forward to harder times in Scotland with the remaining 45% of us. I’ve been a socialist all of my life, which is more than I can say for the Labour Party, a Party who was always guaranteed my vote but not anymore.

I’ve lost all the English speaking channels on my TV in Spain. Don’t know what’s happened. Anyway, I’m watching a Spanish programme that includes lots of great looking young Spanish speaking lassies and lads on what looks like a tropical island. They seem to be arguing with each other about who gets the wood and who does the cooking…………………..

My Spanish isn’t great. If anyone’s seen this one before, please text or email me and let me know I’m wasting my time hoping this is going to develop into some great porno.

So how did the SFA decide this was offensive, what was their criteria?

    …………………………………….

    Starr’

In many ways we have ourselves and the victim culture to blame for that.

Racial motivated crime is a subjective offence – entirely in the opinion of the victim. If he/she considers the attack/crime was racially motivated then that element engages.

The same applies to sectarian motivated crime as far as I can determine, hence the RST today complaining that the term “hun” is a derogatory term for a protestant, even though they, we, the police and the SFA know that this is not the case. Never was and never will be, never could be.

We had our own moment when the Famine song was quite correctly determined to be racist, and the term “fenian” was also determined to be sectarian, again quite correctly in my opinion.

The precedent was set though, and even though the term has never, ever been used to describe all protestants, and many protestants would never be so described, IF the intended target assesses it as sectarian then, as I understand it, the offence is complete.

The SFA charge is more loosely based on what some plonker (copyright David Jason) decides has caused offence. I imagine that one such complaint was enough to trigger the SFA Enforcement investigation.

It is the other side of the double edged sword that we think only has one edge.

Maybe some legal brains on the blog can correct all my musings on this.

Hun, as someone on the blog, apologies for my failure to recall, was first coined n 1961 after the hordes did to Wolverhampton what they did to Manchester in 2008. The term was coined by a local newspaper journalist the morning after the horrible night before, after THEM had drawn with Wolves. He refered to them as Atilla’s huns, apparently.

We simply adopted it as a suitable sobriquet for their supporters, protestant, muslim, hindu Sikh or catholic – who chose to behave as such.

  26. Spanish teams losing the right to negotiate their own TV rights

Spain approves new law on the sale of TV rights

Real Madrid and Barcelona are being stopped from negotiating their own lucrative television rights deals under a new Spanish law.

New rules, coming into force in 2016, will see rights to show La Liga pooled and sold collectively, bringing it more in line with the Premier League.

The deal, which could see a sharp price increase for broadcasters, will benefit the big clubs but to a lesser extent.

A ministry spokesman said the changes allow Spain to “adapt to modern times”.

The ruling will regulate the rights to transmit games in the Spanish first and second divisions as well as the Copa del Rey and Super Cup competitions.

Of total revenues from the sale of the rights, 90% will got to all of the clubs in La Liga – half of that money will be shared equally between the 20 clubs, with the other half divided up according to criteria including recent performance and size.

The other 10% will go to second division clubs, with 70% of that money being divided equally.

Sport ministry spokesman Miguel Cardenal added: “You just have to see that last year the club that came last in the Premier League earned more than [current Spanish champions] Atletico Madrid,” Cardenal said.

In February, the Premier League sold television rights to its games for three seasons from 2016-17 for a record £5.136bn.

Good morning CQN, I think tonight is a wee taster for summer football, Celtic Park under the floodlights is magical but on a nice sunny evening could be just as good, if this was near the start of the season and not near the end come July qualifiers we would be flying, probably just a dream with the dinosaurs that run our game, anyway for all going tonight hope you enjoy a pleasant evening and another 3pts towards Ronny’s 1st title and 2nd honour, enjoy & Hail Hail
