Radical change needed to UK football

756

It’s kicking off in all directions today but keep an eye on the English Football Association proposals to introduce a series of changes to lower league football.  One option on the table is for Premier and Championship sides’ “B teams” to compete in a new structure with League Two and Conference teams.

The FA are eyeing an opportunity to allow the best young English talent, often cosseted in the youth squads of top Premier League teams with little chance of first team action, to be exposed to competitive games.  The proposal includes a geographical split of northern and southern teams.

While the FA Premier League is bust by any known measure, the Football League is in an even worse financial state.  Average income in the lower leagues is remarkably high but the steep pyramid-model, which has clubs chasing huge increases in revenue in the Premier League, leads to excessive over-spend.

With these proposed changes on the table the Scottish FA could do worse than discuss their own game’s future with their English counterparts.  Well run Scottish clubs are hamstrung by their better-funded neighbours cherry-picking their best players for a relative pittance.  Scottish Premiership clubs regularly cannot compete financially for players in England’s fourth tier.

It’s surely time to federate the top Scottish league with the English league structure.

Information slipping out of Switzerland this morning that Manchester City and Paris St Germain are each facing a fine of circa £50m for breaching Financial Fair Play rules is encouraging – if Uefa are able to deliver on the deal.

When you consider financially punishing an entity which owns the oil wealth of a sovereign nation the figure needs to be a big one.  £50m just about hits the mark.

Apparently the Great Sevco Shakedown began this morning when the club’s first every goal scorer, Andy Little, was released.  The news is harsh on the player but the club needs to learn the lesson – income needs to match expenditure.

Imran Ahmed’s court hearing today against Rangers International comes exactly three years after liquidation expert, Craig Whyte, was triumphantly welcomed into Ibrox, an ominous anniversary, for some.

  1. At last we have a kick off time for the U20 game today

    Lennoxtown 3:30pm

JOHN Kennedy says Celtic Under-20s will be aiming to repeat their fantastic feats in their last meeting with their Rangers counterparts when both teams go head-to-head this afternoon (Tuesday).

The young Hoops overcame the Ibrox side 2-0 at Murray Park at the end of March thanks to goals from Connor McManus and Joe Thomson.

And the coach has set the Bhoys a target of repeating that performance as the sides clash at Lennoxtown in a league decider.

“We dropped a few points after that, but going into the game, Rangers are on a good run of form and we’ve picked up again as well,” said the coach.

“Obviously having the added value of the previous result against Rangers, especially being away from home, it will give us confidence. We need make sure we try and replicate that performance with the same enthusiasm and the way we kept and moved the ball, and created chances. That is what it will be all about.

“The most important thing is to concentrate on our game-plan, how we want to play and make sure the players are relaxed and confident.

“Regardless of whether it’s Rangers or anyone else in the league, the most important thing is that you earn the right to play.

“We are not expecting to turn up in the game and being allowed to get the ball and do what we like – we need to earn the right by, first and foremost, winning the battles on the pitch and when the game settles down then you can play good football, which you want to do.

“It’s important to get a result but if we play in the right manner we are more confident we can create enough chances, and if we take them then we have a chance to win the game.”

And Kennedy reckons having home advantage can aid the youths in their quest to play their preferred passing style and ultimately collect three points.

“Obviously, being used to the surroundings here at Lennoxtown will probably help us,” added the coach. “We are used to the pitches and the pitch we are playing on is in immaculate condition so it will suit us to get the ball down and pass it. That’s what it’s all about and that’s what we strive to do.

“We want to be a team that tries to control the football and play out from the back if possible, if not then get our midfield and forward players in positions where they can go and express themselves.”

Kick off at Lennoxtown is 3.30pm and there will be live updates of the game on the club’s official Twitter feed: @celticfc

If you think about it the last time round the huns case was that they’d be flush when the season tickets went on sale, so the arrestment wasn’t justified.

Well the season tickets are now on sale, so either the arrestment won’t kill them, because they’ll have lots of dosh, or it will kill them because they’ve no dosh, in which case the arrestment is justified.

So on a balance of convenience the arrestment should be granted.

    Where to start?

UK FA. Why not? Unity is strength it says somewhere. Time to test the theory?

UEFA FFP. Use the fines as solidarity payments to the league’s most harmed by player wage inflation to develop home grown talent. No brainer in any intelligent industry, a claim Scottish football would be hard pressed to justify.

Yes – out of the frying-pan that is today’s crisis and back into the ole AyeBrokes firesale crisis. :-)

  8. So what is the test in the Ahmed case – does he have to show that on balance of probabilities he wouldn’t get his cash without the arrestment?

And can the fact that arresting the money might force the club into financial trouble be considered as a factor one way or the other?

It’s clear wee Imran is a tad concerned that Sevco is going the way of the pear, and with it, his £500K plus counsel fees.

Given Sevco has brought along its entire senior executive team, it’s equally clear that an arrestment scares the bejaisus out of them.

Even poor old S. Easdale has apparently provided a written statement disclaiming his comments regarding ‘fragile finances’ and whatnot.

    Lyrics to High Noon

Do not forsake me, oh my darling

    On this our wedding day

Do not forsake me, oh my darling

    Wait, wait along

I do not know what fate awaits me

I only know I must be brave

For I must face a man who hates me

Or die a coward, a craven coward

Or die a coward in my grave

Oh, to be torn twixt love and duty

Supposin’ I love my fair haired beauty

Look at that big hand movin’ round

    Nearin’ high noon

He made a vow while in state prison

Said it would be my life or hisn’

I’m not afraid to die but oh

What will I do if you leave me?

Do not forsake me, oh my darling

You make that promise as a bride

Do not forsake me, oh my darling

Although you’re grievin’, don’t think of leavin’

Decision from the court at 4pm apparently!

I am curious about the evidence in this case. Last week Wallace could not show where any of the missing money went because those who were responsible for that money were no longer at the club. Now, if that is so, who from the club is now going to stand up and say that Ahmed is not de facto due his payment as presumably anyone who knows if he was due the money or not has in fact left the building!

‘Actor John Wayne disliked the film because he felt it was an allegory for blacklisting, which he actively supported. In his Playboy interview from May 1971, Wayne stated he considered High Noon “the most un-American thing I’ve ever seen in my whole life”Wayne went on to say he would never regret having helped blacklist liberal screenwriter Carl Foreman from Hollywood’

In 1959, Wayne teamed up with director Howard Hawks to make Rio Bravo as a conservative response. Hawks explained: “I made Rio Bravo because I didn’t like High Noon. Neither did Duke. I didn’t think a good town marshal was going to run around town like a chicken with his head cut off asking everyone to help. And who saves him? His Quaker wife. That isn’t my idea of a good Western.”

  24. Have to say I am quite disappointed with the Turnbull Hutton line on TSFM and the easy ride he was given by an admiring interviewer.

    Turnbull’s basic message is:-

    1. We have to move on and not analyse what happened in 2012.

    2. It was more cock-up than conspiracy because Peat, Farry etc; are all good guys.

    3. A stephbhoy like longing for the pre-Bosman, pre-TV money days of the 60s which are not coming back any time soon.

    This all happened in 2012.

We are not talking about the Jacobite Rebellion, the Easter Rising, or even the Suez Crisis. This is still current. If there was no conspiracy, then why the secrecy of a 5 way agreement? Which Sports Administrative Body has ever had to regulate under conditions of secrecy? And if they can do so once, they can repeat the trick.

The play has always been to ride out the storm and hope that the fans forget.

And, I fear that stupid plan is working.

We have fans staying away from CP and, I believe that, for every one that is doing so because of a sense of alienation from the club’s silence on these matters, there are 4 more, who are just missing the thrill of a competitive league or complaining that Celtic are not splashing the cash, even though it would be to no good effect.

There will be further Zombie fatigue. That is the necessary logic of just put it all behind you; it’s in the past.

You don’t need to bother your pretty little head as to why Rangers were granted a license or why the rules that had governed Third Lanark, Airdrieonians and Gretna were not sufficient for this 2012 situation, because we’ll just reverse those decisions too and have them back playing under their old names with their records intact, if you give us more time and the benefit of your amnesia.

You don’t need to know why the SFA thinks it unimportant to clarify, under what rules, TRFC are a continuing club, because Mr. Regan has already said it is just a matter of semantics. You don’t need to know why there was a closing of media ranks around the narrative of club continuity because Daddy knows best. Your job is to shut up and pay up. Just pretend all this never happened; Rangers just went somewhere else for 3 years and now they’re back and we can go on as before. Come on, you know you are going to like it. We know you miss them. And, promise, we won’t let them away with anything again, not that we did, you understand. You can trust us. After all, haven’t we always told you the truth and nothing but the truth?

And anyway, Celtic get all the decisions going too. One’s as bad as each other. That’s your lot.
