Rare wisdom about making mistakes

189

In many years of writing here I’ve never before used a piece of Charlie Nicholas wisdom; there is not too much to choose from.  One of his comments stuck in my head, though.  A year after Celtic won at Arsenal in the Pierce O’Leary Testimonial, but went on to lose the league, Arsenal thumped Celtic 1-5 in Glasgow.

In a rare generous mood towards his former club, after the game Nicholas said, “These matches are all about making mistakes”.  What the returning Celtic manager Billy McNeill needed more than anything was information.  Arsenal provided plenty that afternoon.  The lesson was clear, Billy and his players had a lot of work to do.

What happened that season is now part of our folklore.  Billy pursued, and within two months signed, Frank McAvennie, Celtic steamrollered their way to the league title and completed the double against Dundee Untied at Hampden.  Heavy preseason defeats to Arsenal (and Stromstad) were grist to the mill, a part of an eventual successful outcome, just as the doing West Ham’s doled out last year was.

Celtic would benefit from flushing out their mistakes in their three remaining preseason games.  Thus far, the build-up has been useful in putting energy into the legs, but we need better tests.

  1. Loving the hotel chat — not for the likes of us …

The effort put into running the idea down is incredible and just so predictable.

The Scottish cringe wrapped up in green and white.

Glesga has too many hotels — seriously?

Might be news to these folks:

    https://www.urbanrealm.com/news/10074/174-room_hotel_planned_for_a_crumbling_Glasgow_warehouse_.html

    Or even their near neighbours:

    https://www.urbanrealm.com/news/9312/Longstanding_Broomielaw_gap-site_to_host_apart-hotel_.html

Scary that such negativity comes as easily as it does.

    I blame the weather.

Hotel @ P/head — market maker vs market taker — discuss?

Limited East End provision — then we make the market with little or no competition.

Glesga and it 12K hotel rooms — then we take some of the market using our football history to get people involved.

The hotel is not a “fire and forget” project — it would have to be part of a more complete plan.

Expanded main stand — the issue now is not if / it is now a when?

Museum / image gallery — again it is now down to timing and scale.

Matchday facilities — improvements as above.

More football — B Team / Ladies matches in the East End.

Then comes the engagement with the rest of the city.

GCC Avenues project — lobby the council to include the Gallowgate in this project.

All the current spend is either the city centre or in leafy middle class areas.

Big lever to get the street upgraded to link the stadium to the Merchant City.

Avenues project has a budget of well over £100mill — ridiculous really but we need to shout our case.

Next up would be a dedicated link / bus between P/head and the city centre.

It would support the hotel and the tourist facilities — awkward but very doable.

Happy to discuss the — many I’m sure — issues.

Blanket condemnations — not so much.

  2. No teams willing to spend money will be taking their cues from the Record,or any other branch of the SMSM.We can see the lengths Ange goes to before signing a player, other clubs, like Ajax with more of an infrastructure built up over the years, will be more thorough.Yes,I think k Bassey might go on to be a very good player, but that’s what he is,a punt. For half of last season the Hun blogs were giving him and Goldson, pelters.I read them,I know. There could be a last minute punt by someone, willing to take the chance, but what we are reading in the Rencord and such,is just unadulterated drivel.

Has any rag mentioned Juranovic,a seasoned Croatian International at anywhere near £ 25 million?Tells you all.

BSR – yep, the local media effectively ‘do’ information management for the Huns.

They talk up stories that make them look like Billy BigBaws.

They minimise or ignore stories that make them look like Penny Ante.

An ethical press shouldn’t do that; it’s press relations without the retainer fees.

I’m not too fussed if it’s the hope that kills them – as long as something does I’d be content enuff.

  4. Correction…in the race for ” LISBOA” SIX of the runners, including LISBOA, have never ran before while Five of the other runners have ran once before.

They are all TWO year olds.

About 65,000 at the MCG to see Man U take on Melb Victory on a chilly, dry Melb night.

Nani has just signed for Victory btw.

Big TV coverage – if we get the same treatment for the Ange homecoming, it will be massive for our brand rep!!

  6. With inflation on the rise for the foreseeable future,Covid on the rise again, which looks like a long term problem, uncertainty about Public spending,a war raging in Europe, affecting us all,in many ways financially, said inflation cutting money from everyone’s spending power,Mad Mitch is proposing we invest hundreds of millions on a Minty Moonbeams project.

    That would end well.

Plays for the Slovakian NT and has experience at CDM.

Looks to me like very good value.

I wonder who his agent is?

Would he improve our team / squad?

Would we have been competitive for his signature vs 12th in Serie A?

  10. How much of Glasgow’s hotel business relied on the business conference market?

How is that market doing now post covid in the WFH age?

  11. It appears that TORY Candidate PENNY MORDAUNT has been telling LIES about her so called ” Royal Navy Career”…according to Navy Officials.

She became an ” HONOURARY MEMBER” of the Reservist Crew..whatever that means ?

    A TORY telling LIES….Surely NOT ?

I watched her on TV a few days ago speaking in her campaign, and she was banging on about NOT having a WILLY ?

    HH.

  12. EL — not a huge amount.

Glesga has slipped of the conference circuit at the moment.

In years gone by they gave it a go but it seems to have scaled back.

The easy money at the SECC is filling the Hydro with ladies of a certain vintage and their hinger-oans as they guzzle the cheeky wa’ter.

Hotels — Glesga is a low cost environment.

Holiday angle is growing as the Highlands crew spend sometime in the city.

    Cheaper than Auld Reekie.

Plus the Hydro sell outs bring in people from all over.

    ###

Thatcher of course used to say that everyone should have a Willie.

But life was less complicated then, and she was referring to Willie Whitelaw.

Mordant was probably referring to the transgender question, on which she is said to be on the ‘progressive’ side of the argument.

I believe she has four cats, so that might endear her to you. Personally I’m more on the Tobias Ellwood side on that issue.

  15. EL — WFH vs conferences?

WFH means that more people will want to go to more conferences.

Just to get out the house.

Currently suffering from the blowback at the moment.

WFH = stir crazy / want’s to be out every weekend going places.

The rest of us just want a quiet life.

    We suffer in silence.

    Smile as we visit.

  16. Mad Mitch,

Let’s start with a deep clean and a lick of paint first.

The hotel concept is a non starter now. To reiterate there has been 11 additional hotels built in Glasgow in the last decade. Many of them budget accommodation within walking distance of Glasgow Buchanan St bus station. ( Lack of a train link from Glasgow Airport is unbelievable )

Supporters would rather stay in the City Centre for a weekend than commute to the city centre.

Maybe Celtic should look at a link up with one of the hotel chains and concentrate on viable temporary and permanent ventures to improve and optimise the match day experience.

Hope I’ve got the spelling right this time, given that you are one of our more er sensitive posters.

I should have known better than to question someone who took a Celtic victory over Lille and somehow imagined what if would have been like to draw the game instead. Need to remember that approach to supporting Celtic in the future. Was only a few days back when you were on here bleating, and threatening to do a flounce. Some well time interventions from others managed to pull you back from the brink. If you had been paying attention you would have noted that I wasn’t one of them. I got that bit right. Spellin an aw.

  18. MM,

Glasgow is not a low cost environment. It is in the top 10 most expensive UK destinations for a night out.

    HH.

  19. Its almost as if he doesnt go to celtic park or know the ever changing environment, any number of gentification investments has been made, st lukes and the former bairds as examples, however why would a tourist base themselves in springfield road at an out of centre hotel when there are thousands were the real action is.

the other hobby horse, b team and ladies games in the east end, seriously who would turn up to see that ?

the open training day, it will be atteneded by some thousands as were previous ones, but its on glasgow fair monday, so I expect those who champion all the development needed will already have their excuses of why they didnt go.

meanwhile the new edminston is taking shape, 9 months late already.

  20. GP @ 11.20

Well at least we know have Conrad Hilton’s log in details.

You appear very certain — not sure I share it.

Hotels vs Stadiums — so Glesga is different / special?

That dog don’t hunt I’m afraid.

You would be surprised where tourists will base themselves.

We have the land / we would have secure parking / he have the history.

We need to make the most of what we have got rather than living in the past.

    …………..

i couldnt give a Toss about her having Cats…nor do I care about whether she has a Willy/Willie or not.

    A Boaby is a Boaby

I know about the Thatcher comment.

it appears however that she has greatly ENHANCED her so called Royal Navy ” career” in her campaign speeches.

Maybe she will be questioned LIVE on TV about it tonight ?

Imagine a TORY telling FIBS….who would have thought it ?

  25. Regards Celtic in the Europa League last season, the goals against stats are skewed by the 8 goals we conceded in the first two games.

Our results up to the end of September, domestically and in Europe was no indicator to our performance in the rest of the season – by the time we had played been humped by Leverkusen and lost by a single goal in Seville against Betis we sat 6th in the SPL. Our worst start domestically for decades, three losses and a draw in 7 games, gloomy predictions for the rest of the season, who can forget we’d struggle to get make the top six prediction from one of our very own on here.

Our central defensive partnership had played once together before betis, I think the home game against Leverkusen was their third game together. Who knew they’d defend without any discomfort against a team who had to win the game and went on to a Europa league final. Amazing progress.

We went in to win the league with relative ease, and won three out of our last 4 Europa league games. Bodo Glint was a shock, but hopefully a blip in the development of the team. Facing a team of less talented individuals who had been under the same excellent coach playing a similar system for years was a lesson in itself.

It would be more helpful, less stressful, even, were we to look at what the results over the entire season and take into consideration the stage the team was at when we played a lot of the Europa League games.

  26. Judge our team now on where we are now.

Bodo/Glimt have had the same coach for 3 or 4 years. They wouldn’t have beaten us 6 months after he’d been in charge, I’d wager they won’t beat us next season if we play them

  27. CELTICMAC

I also noted that in among your childish personal attacks, over several emails, you never once addressed our appalling European defensive record over recent seasons.

  28. What’s the relevance of Celtics defensive record in previous seasons under different managers?

  29. CELTICMAC

CELTIC40ME just showed you how to respond on a blog. Added to the debate with a different, and rational perspective.

I distrust politicians who feel it necessary to lie and mislead the public by presenting a false persona because they consider it would be to their electoral advantage.
