Referring to a team no longer with us

753

Let’s be clear, you cannot punish a player on the basis that he has made a comment which is only offensive, offence is subjective, highly so in Scottish football, where thousands await the opportunity.

Nor can you punish a player for a derogatory remark which may offend, especially if the remark does not call into question the probity of the subject.  “Hearts are rotten, we beat them easily twice this season”, is a derogatory remark and will offend some Hearts fans, but it also falls into the category of being a fair opinion.

And without pointing out the obvious, you cannot offend the dead.  John Guidetti and the club are right to contest this ridiculous charge, which by context, clearly refers to a team no longer with us.

I was absolutely astonished to read that newco (and former oldco) director, Paul Murray, explained Dave King’s absence from newco’s recent share as he is waiting until the SFA “have completed their review of Dave’s status before he can fully participate in the future of the Club”.

The SFA have no issue whatsoever in Dave King investing heavily in newco, or in owning all shares.  Indeed, King is already the largest shareholder, which has attracted no attention from the football authorities.

The prospect of King sloping off if the SFA judge him not Fit and Proper (which I think they will), is a fabulous twist in the work of this legendary non-executive director of a dead club.  He sat on the oldco board which paid EBTs for so many years, he stayed while they made no provision for the HMRC tax case, plunging into the transfer market instead.  Now he awaits the whim of the SFA before deciding to invest, having led newco away from their primary source of funding.

What a star.

As we all know the JG song and other stuff is a deliberate tactic to deflect attention AWAY from GOVAN.

We all know that , yes?

We all know they are in King Sized doo doo, Mike has them by the short n curlies, their team is crap, Ibrox is falling apart, and 3 years later, naebudy is even being told who owns their ground, etc.

If only… if only one Scottish journalist would ask the pertinent questions, and there are so many.

If only… our club seizes this opportunity and finally asserts itself as THE power broker.

WE should be calling the shots, not CO & Co.

It is interesting that David Gill was elected, 43-10, by UEFA as FIFA Vice-President as opposed to being appointed by the four ‘Home’ Nations. After Jim Boyce, IFA, the order agreed, and confirmed in 2011, was supposed to be FAW, SFA, FA, and IFA every four years. The Welsh President, Trevor Hughes is upset at the FA in that he was next in line for Buggins Turn. Gill is not the FA President, but of course he was in part responsible, along with Alex Ferguson, for the rise, and the sale of MUFC. His role no doubt will be to try and get England rubber-stamped for the 2026 World Cup, or earlier if things go pearshaped in Qatar. Where that leaves the SFA is anybody’s guess, would have been next in line after Gill, but could face a UEFA vote against say the FA candidate, which could, I think, be Gill again, ie not Gilligan. How many in UEFA would vote for the SFA against the FA? My guess, not many!

  8. I would refer the RST to John Reid’s Statement to the Celtic AGM in 2008 when The Famine Song WAS deemed racist. Just to set the record straight.

John Reid’s Statement at Celtic AGM 2008

Why did you decide to speak out about ‘The Famine Song’ and is it important that the club make sure that our supporters protect the integrity of Celtic’s name?

I spoke out about it because this is a pretty vile song and I don’t think that any reasonable person who has read the words of this song can see it as anything other than a pretty vicious, racist song. It combines racism and sectarianism and goes beyond a lot of other things that we have seen in the past. That’s one of the reasons why I spoke out and I also come from Irish and Scottish descent myself, so that’s the main reason.

But there is a bigger and wider reason as well and that is, the nature of this club. We are proud of the fact that we have Scottish origins and Irish heritage and we are never going to deny that. We will defend that and that is not a cause for shame, it’s a cause for recognition and celebration. Indeed our very name ‘Celtic’ is about the unity of the Scottish and Irish people. It stands against those who would divide, discriminate and oppose those two entities. And because we start from that basis of the unity of peoples then we have always been open and inclusive as a club.

That’s why traditionally we have never discriminated. That’s why our board, our shareholders, our footballers and our footballing heroes come from all sorts of different backgrounds, religions, ethnic groups and do so internationally. That’s why I said last year that whatever differences we have when we come into this club we leave them at the door because we believe truly, in a Scotland that is one bit of many cultures and is way beyond now being Scots and Irish. That is our stance, therefore we have to speak out when we see racism or sectarianism being practised and of course, if we are going to do that we have to practise what we preach.

We have to be careful, from our own point of view and that’s why I am absolutely delighted that our fans in recent years have had accolades from the world football authorities, from the European football authorities and let me say when I point out that there may be a minority who are transgressing our own rules, that they are our own rules. I don’t know any Celtic fans who have been chanting racist slogans or anything of that nature, so I am not comparing like with like here. But I am saying that we have got to be whiter than white and that we have to explain to and educate everybody at this club, including that tiny minority which at away games sometimes leaves us exposed to those who would attempt to say that we are all the same. We aren’t all the same , but we have to make sure that that is evident to everybody. That’s the nature of Celtic Football Club.

Now read what Sir David Murray said in response.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/rangers/3492846/Rangers-chairman-Sir-David-Murray-accuses-Celtic-counterpart-John-Reid-over-Famine-Song-attack-Football.html

From the perspective of history its an absolute hoot. e.g

” and I think there’s a strong argument, especially in the west of Scotland that to have a politician in charge of a football club is verging on the dangerous. ”
