Relentless pillage of transfer stories wearisome

802

News (confirmed by his club) that our next Champions League opponents Juventus have opened negotiations with Athletic Blibao striker Fernando Llorente, ahead of a possible free-transfer move in the summer, appears to put recent fantasy stories about Gary Hooper supposedly moving to Turin in the correct context.  Liverpool, who several newspapers also ‘reported’ were interested in Hooper, signed a different striker this week.

The relentless pillage of Celtic player’s names used to sell newspapers is wearisome, probably more so to those at the club hoping to convince Hooper, and Victor Wanyama, to sign new contracts.  Chances of re-signing Hooper if he thinks Juventus and Liverpool are about to bid for him: 0%. Chances if it’s relegation battlers from England: considerably higher. I see a new front has been opened today on Beram. We have to ensure another 28 days of this nonsense.

Llorente is a current Spanish international and played a huge part in Atheltic’s march to the Europa League final last season, but I would not be too concerned if Juventus tried to secure him this month.  Moving to Turin is notoriously challenging for strikers and Llorente has never been based outside of the Basque country.

  1. Hi Paul67 if you are still around.

Sorry to keep goin on about it but has the problem with the WONGA ads on CQN been sorted out?

    Cheers!

  2. £5m for Kayal. yes please btw. Went to ground twice yesterday with no need for it. Not sure that can be coached out of him as he has been doing it since he arrived. I’m sure Chris Hughton spotted it and thought maybe not 5 for him.

Commons was good yesterday as usual but very few players on the same wavelength. Also very few players who looked up for it yesterday in the sense that they thought they had to be at the top of their game. Players taking their eye of the ball when they had to control it (Hooper) Players going to ground with nor reason (Kayal). Players not attacking the ball with any conviction in the box (Samaras).

The psychological malaise which impacts our home game will continue until someone gives players a verbal doing for this complacency.

What you need to do is get one of those huge, great big tins of Quality Street and unwrap all the coloured cellophane wrappers from the sweeties then stick them on to your screen with a transparent glue.

    Problem solved!

  4. Surprised that Athletic Bilbao haven’t sniffed around Celtic for Emilio Izaguirre, or if they have, it has never been leaked out. Athletic will pay top dollar for anyone with a Basque heritage and Izzy suits their style of play more than any other player in Scottish Football.

From a footballing and a cantera policy perspective, he would be more than a decent acquisition.

Celtic should be on the lookouts.

  5. Neil Francis Lennon needs help his job is managing the team ,

  9. It’s good we have this break , then a spate of games before the 2 big games against Juve.

As long as we can keep the full squad we have a chance. Our first XI are a big tall strong team, probably the biggest left in the champions league. It will take a right good team to beat us over 2 legs. If only we had a Lubo for a little bit of artistry in last 20 mins , particularly for CL.

On Kelvin Wilson no surprise really ; wonder if Campbell Ogilvie wanted to sit in on the judgement like his pal George Peat did for Lennys trial or was it that much of a foregone conclusion it was not necessary.

Anyway 9 points clear and fully expect 3 out of 4 trophies in the cabinet this summer……there is one which I am not to bothered about whether we win it or not!

  10. I see that Zombie FC’s shares are now trading at 92p.

Wise men told us here that the price would plummet from the 70p floatation.

Looks very much like the SFA are hurting big time at the moment due to our progress in all competitions

There is no doubt in my mind Lunny has been told to obey orders from above or receive his P45 pronto

Is time fast approaching of a fans boycott of the National Stadium?

I for one will not set foot in the place ever again until there is a root and branch clear out at the SFA

Lets go to Hampden, lets see our heroes lift the last our our quad of trophies!

We have already won, and will continue to do so!

You witnessed a Sevconian display of refereeing yesterday – thus showing how much pain they are experiencing!

The Internet has and will continue to deliver justice to the Celtic family.

We can now build up a vast amount of facts and record them for our grandchildren to see!

leftclicktic – correct! It’s not NFL who should be challenging the SFA behind the scenes, although in his role as football manager I would expect him to question the amount of bookings we are receiving.

The Motherwell game was one of a number this season where the referee behaved disgracefully. We can’t question every decision that goes against us, but blatant examples of bias or incompetence must be challenged by the club.

I disagree with your assessment of Llorente’s capabilities. I’ve watched a lot of Athletic over the last few years and been to the San Mames many times and the big guy is a hugely impressive player, who, in my opinion, is well capable of plying his trade anywhere. From a Celtic point of view, I’d be happier if he did not move to Juve in this window. Its a pity that himself and Athletic are at loggerheads as it is always a pleasure to watch him play. I just hope he does not head to Juve.

  15. If, and it is more than likely a huge if given the laptop loyal’s hit rate, we were offered £5m for Kayal then it should be a no brainer. An injury prone squad player who will never be first choice as long as Brown is at CP, and plays in a position we are more than well covered in, could be replaced by more attack minded player or players. Dorrans at WBA for example is available at half the price of Kayal. A more creative/attacking player who would offer something different to the more defensive minded midfielders we currently have.

Share ramping (also known as ‘pump and dump’ and ‘book ramping’) is where criminals influence the share price of a company and then take advantage of it.

It is commonly done by bringing a company to the market with false expectations of its profitability.

  20. Well if anyone wants to know what trial by television looks like, we’ve just seen it.

An innocuous incident, missed by the referee, and by the majority of the crowd, and even dismissed by the alleged “victim”, has resulted in a two-game ban for one of our best defenders.

The only people who saw this foul as worthy of a red card (which is effectively what it has been judged as), were the ESPN commentary team, Steven Craigin and Craig Burley.

Meanwhile, Ian Black is allowed to commit some truly 1970s-esque fouls with the same sanction as was applied to our keeper for calmly pointing out that the ball was not on the penalty spot…

    But then, we’re just paranoid aren’t we…?

  23. I have in the past avoided the Daily Record online and in print, however I must admit that I had a look at it today on my mobile phone.

Today’s edition is proof positive that it is nothing more than a Sevco Fanzine.

Could you imagine the Daily Mirror in England leading with stories about a new club in the English 4th Tier over the top placed English side in the country? No. It wouldn’t happen.

Follow this with a story trying to punt Fraser Forster to England.

Nowhere on the front page of the mobile version of the Daily Sevco is there a link to a match report from two of the in form sides in Scotlands top flight.

We’ve known it for years. They cater for their largest audience. Their largest audience is still the Follow Followers of Old Rangers and now New Rangers.

I am going to do myself a favour and just not bother with it again. Gordon_J backing Neil Lennon – Yup.

The government may be run by posh boys, but they have put their fellow posh boy Ed Miliband in the awkward position of promising to freeze the wages of nurses, teachers, firemen, and the like, while increasing dole money for Jeremy Kyle’s guests. Let’s see how that one goes down with the unions and working Labour voters at the next election. Miliband has a knack for making Cameron look plausible.

Problem is, we have too many people who see benefits not as the temporary safety net they were intended to be, but as an alternate lifestyle living off the backs of working people.

We need to thin out their ranks a bit, before this country ends up looking like Airdrie writ large.

Unfortunately the government is tinkering around the edges of welfare. The real fun begins when the markets refuse to lend UK plc any more money. As you may know, the government is still borrowing billions of pounds it doesn’t have to pay for our welfare bill. The national debt is growing like a monstrous tumour while politicians caper and clown about the deficit. The day of reckoning – Moneygeddon – will come.

You make far too many tendentious and question-begging assertions for me to address individually (am too busy paying taxes for benefits claimants to live off), but this one was a brammer:

But the jobs are simply not there because of the economic slump made worse by this government’s failed economic policies

Nope. Immigrants are still flocking to this country and finding jobs, even in “poor” areas like central belt Scotland, Wales, and the north of England. Most of them are not particularly skilled or experienced, and many don’t even speak English. They’re just willing to graft.

The reason we have long-term unemployment is because we pay people to sit on their increasingly obese backsides, drink super lager and smoke Benson and Hedges while they laugh up their Kappa track suit sleeves at the chumps who work for a living. Remove the incentives to be permanently on the dole and you will find, as if by magic, that these people can work after all.

They are not – as you seem to believe – helpless victims who need perpetual handouts. They are human beings with the ability to take control of their own lives, if only we will stop infantilising them through the benefits system.

I have a great belief in Britain, you know. We are not a nation of social workers, or clients of social workers. We are not, please God, a nation of deserving cases. We are a fierce, proud nation, and we are still, God willing, a nation to be reckoned with!

  27. PeteTheBeat – 13:07 on 3 January, 2013

I suspect that the brokers (whose name escapes me right now) that did the floatation for them are still acting as market makers. I decided to take a break away from watching them after the first couple of days but in those first couple of days less than 1% of RFC shares traded were buys and yet the price rose. That can only be done by market makers imo. In a normal market selling of that magnitude would cause a crash in the price.
