Rennes a yardstick against undefeated Lille

119

Lille are the only undefeated team in Ligue 1, sitting joint top with PSG, by any measure, this is their high watermark.  By contrast, Celtic go into tonight’s game without a win in three outings, having lost their place at the top of the domestic table.  With an important Scottish Cup tie ahead, this is a game some tired legs could well do without.

The final Champions League qualification spot in France last season was taken by Rennes, who had one of their most memorable seasons in decades, but managed only one point from two Europa games against Celtic.  Rennes continue to shadow Lille this season, this time from one place below.  Our achievements in France last season will be a good yardstick for the manager going into tonight’s game.

I don’t know anyone who expects a result tonight, a point would feel like a victory, but most of all, I want the players home fit and healthy tomorrow morning.  They have a big weekend ahead.

I would like to see a good defensive performance…

I’m with you on this one. Lille are joint top and should not be underestimated especially since we are away from home.

Put in a good defensive shift and be patient and look for goal opportunities.

  2. Is this Neil lennon lack of tactics a new thing?…. Funnily when celtic played hibs when lennon was manager of hibs… I saw absolutely no evidence of tactical naivety…. On the contrary I saw hibs giving celtic their hardest games under Rodgers in the Spl

  3. VTD…can u then explain Lewis Morgan or Christie playing as a lone striker? That’s taking tactical bamboozlement to another level…as for 2nite…Rogic has got to start surely?

    H.H.

  4. Make ourselves hard to beat, play 4 5 1 Taylor left back not frimpong at right back, Laxalt wide left of 5, Christie i would play Turnbull give him a full game see what he has got Mcgregor and Rogic for an hour , Eddie if fit for a half or Griff, have a game plan make ourselves hard to play against.

  6. Good afternoon all! Long time lurker ( I really don’t like that description) and extremely infrequent poster who has been stirred into action by Bankiebhoy. Wonderful post, hopefully we will all take it to heart. God bless Neil Francis Lennon!

  7. TLT… He’s already said rogic won’t play!… Rogic not long back from persistent injury 3 games in a week might just be a tad too much…. But I’m guessing you know that?!….. My question wasn’t if he had tactical naivety it was if it was a new thing as it didn’t seem too prevalent when at hibs when he gave as good as he got against the guru…..

  8. VINNIETHEDOG @ 4:29 PM,

    Great to see you posting…

Don’t want to get too deep into the argument but it doesn’t take a tactical genius to pitch a young, John McGinn against an aging Scott Brown.

    Aff ooot…

    Hail Hail

  9. VTD…I think the problem is that Lenny is uncertain about who our strongest 11 are…taking covid/injuries into account

Ntcham came on as a sub against Lazio on 77mins? I don’t get the logic? He played 13mins.

  11. I don’t think the Scottish Cup is a big deal or Quadruple Treble.

The record will come to an end some time and as long as it’s not Sevco, I don’t really care.

The League followed by Europe are my priorities.

  12. Also this theory about his passing is a heap I’m afraid.

He gives the ball away constantly. Even against Adeen he kept giving it away, it was his poor pass that lead to the first pen on Sunday.

We’ll have to agree to disagree I think he’s a bombscare in Europe, gives the ball away and does not cover back, from the opposition managers point of view seeing him playing is good news. You’ll get chances from his poor passing or from him not covering runs.

  13. Today’s official starting line up v Lille ……

Bain; Frimpong, Duffy, Ajer, Laxalt, Brown, McGregor, Ntcham, Christie, Elyounoussi, Ajeti

Subs: Barkas, Taylor, Bitton, Welsh, Soro, Turnbull, Klimala, Dembele, Rogic, Henderson, Griffith, Edouard

  14. I see us sitting in and hoping to catch them on the break with that team….let’s do this ;-))

  15. Chairbhoy. That’s not saying much for BR if he couldn’t counteract that move..?!……mmm

  16. Good to see some new posters and some of the old names popping back up. Almost all come in with support for the Celtic and for Neil Lennon which fills me with joy. We’re slowly coming out of a bit of a form and/or confidence slump. Tonight might be a tough test but regardless of the result I will wake up a Celtic supporter in the morning. Going for a tight 1 goal game tonight.

For all USA Bhoys, CBS All Access is showing all Champions League and Europa League games live. I think there’s a $5/month premium channel charge on top of your regular package subscription, but surely well worth it.
