Rhetorical magic from old Lumley-troubler

1149

Old Lumley-troubled used a classic rhetorical technique yesterday. Give your target audience lots of points to consider which you know they will agree with; build empathy, get heads nodding, fists banging on tables, then slip in the line you are trying to sell. As a piece of prose, you have to respect the statement. This guy, or his writer, has not only read the Greeks, he’s understood their importance.

If Sir David is right, Rangers issued no side contracts, all non-discretionary payments to players in connection to football were registered, if the redacted contract which appeared in The Sun in March was a piece of fiction, if the prima facie evidence presented by Duff and Phelps was an error, he and his soon to be liquidated former club have nothing to worry about.

  1. Morning CQN,

1st post of the new season.

As tomorrow is Singapura’s 47th B/day tomorrow is indeed a public holiday! WooHoooo….

Myself and few fellow Singtims will be taking this match in with a few cold ones and a few pork pies at 0100hrs….

I am worries about the artificial pitch in one sense and then excited in another!?!? We have few guys in the squad whom can whack it from a fair distance so gotta feeling we may score a couple of screamers.

My worries are if we play the long ball. IMO long ball = defeat. We need to be smart with possession and our positioning and defending is key!

    Bring on Helsinki!!

    Hail Hail

    SPC

p.s. I promise to attend the next CQN open!

  2. JJ

Agree with that,m but the rest of us know….

    KevJ

Izzy needs a bit of good backing and the CBs need to get used to his return. This is where Brick67 comes in, at the back of a midfield 5, with Chico there to help. Joe & Beram will also lend a wee hand :)) I’d then get Kris and wee JF to fire the through balls to the Enigma.

Defensive and a big threat up front.

PS Lenny knows what he’s doing and won’t be paying any heed to my mince :)

    I don’t do team predictions.

It must be someone else you’re thinking of,as I prefer to make a fool of myself in other ways!

  4. BMCUW

    Me neither.

But it takes a lot of homeawes to admit we’re don’t have the homeawes to predict a an NL first 11 for any game.

And I have noticed that the first ones to recommend a 1st 11 are the last ones to admit when they were wrong, and the first ones to admit when they were right.

What am saying is, the ones with biggest homeawes don’t just talk about homeawes all the time.

Right, have to go. The home awes needs maintenance work done.

You maybe right-kinda hard to tell,tbh-but it’s more to do with my predictions on a Saturday.

They are crap-hence the expression “Doon like a Saturday coupon”-and I’m only trying to get four right, ffs.

I’m defo not daft enough to try for eleven!

  6. BMCUW

:)) I do read back on occasion and understand the “hard to tell” bit. It’s often lost on me too. What I meant was, the balls too big, the balls too small, the wee ones hang on the lads too tall, the big ones hang on the lads too small. Simples. Too many of us suffer from wee man syndrome.

Re the coupons. Simple answer. NEVER put the Tic on a coupon.

Am disappointed if you haven’t realised that by now.

  7. From an article by Brian Marjoribanks in the Mail. The article was surely written to the tune of the Dambusters and is riddled with the stench of imperialism:

“The din that greeted the Rangers team’s pre-match walk into the centre circle only got noisier when Ibrox ambassador Sandy Jardine took to the stadium PA to announce: ‘Welcome back to Ibrox. Home of Rangers then, now and forever. After the most difficult period in the club’s history, Rangers would like to thank their supporters for not walking away. We are the people.’ ”

I wonder if a ‘journalist’ will seek an interview with Mr. Jardine and ask him what is meant by the phrase, “We are the people”.

    Morning all

Things have been a little hectic recently chez canard, but I’m still here and looking forward to tonight’s game. Nervously.

  9. From the Daily Record today:

A sign which ran the length of the Copland Road stand read: “Rangers then. Rangers now. Rangers forever. Established 1872.”

It was the club’s way of re-emphasising what they regard to be an unbroken timeline regardless of those who say Rangers ceased to be in summer and a newco meant re-birth under another guise.

    ==============================================

Good, I hope that means the new club and their followers are prepared to pay back the people their ‘unbroken history’ would suggest they owe money to.

  10. Feel chilled about tonight, guaranteed I won’t be at 5.55pm.

Hope to see 4-2-3-1, sitting 2 keeping their shape and the back line as tight as possible especially first and last 5 mins of each half- when we are vulnerable.

Hilarious that a couple of posters should get lambasted for suggesting that if we’re going to keep McCourt then we should give him more game time yet the suggestion that if we give Ki an armband he’ll go on to emulate Gerrard won’t cause much of a reaction.

I know which is the more outlandish suggestion, and its not giving Paddy 15 minutes to do something instead of the 4 of got against Helsinki at home.

Ki is a good player but too often gets a rush of blood to the head when in a good position. Steven Gerrard?!

    I’d take the money.

2-1 to the bhoys again tonight.

When I stop to think about this it stinks. The tax payer and hundreds of small businesses were shafted by the Old Club. Yet they have the arrogance, cheek and stupidity to claim unbroken history.

Well, it’s like this – pay the debts and take the punishments of the old club or accept that avoidance of same means that you have to be a new club.

I couldn’t give one flying frig about their game last night but the cheats have to be held to account.

And by the way, where was Jardine for the last 20 years? And why is he now ‘The Peepul’??

    Good morning CQN

Like this new layout well done all involved

Good luck to the Bhoys to-night

Will have to search the web sites for game

    Keep the Faith

    Is T.Rogne injured again?

Why can’t our Bhoys get ‘injured’ like that Algerian 1500m runner?

Was at the game last Wednesday thought Helsinki had a few tidy players the two full backs two in midfield and the tiny number seven we will need to be on our game tonight to go thru IMO . My team for tonight would be foster Mathews lustig mulgrew ledley broony kayal wanyama commons sammy hooper I would play 451

  17. Morning,

A big game ahead tonight. We really should be good enough for a draw. Well, as long as we dont concede before I have even got a pint up…

  18. Snake Plissken on

    I’ve said 2-2.

Cannot see us with a clean sheet but can see us score.

This result gets us through and that is all that matters.

No stupid bloody giveaway goals and no chucking it if we lose the first goal. Both of these things have been routine in the last few years.

Time to show we’ve really learned lessons.

  19. Morning, any South Wales bhoys about, going to be in Cardiff tonight and looking for any info on pubs where the game might be on. Checked Celtic bars so have a couple of names but no confirmation from South Wales CSC if it will be on in any of the Cardiff pubs.

    any help suggestions appreciated.

  20. Hope this young team learned from last seasons Europa experience and get through the tie.

I am not overly confident but I never am, we should have enough though.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we scored first?

  21. Monaghan1900

‘And by the way, where was Jardine for the last 20 years? And why is he now ‘The Peepul’?’

Jardine gets paid a £1k a week to pick up new players at the airport and by the sounds of it, also be the occasional PA at SevCo

A £1k a week would get them another player for Div3, but they give it to the ol’ rabble rouser instead

  22. Only going through to the play-offs count tonight, if we go out then prepare yourself for at least two of our big names to go,Vic/Hooper/Kayal/Ki take your pick.

Avoid the stupid tactics we had against Utrecht, every player must turn up and do their best.

    Think Lenny will go 4411.

    No calamities please

    KTF

  23. There can be no excuses tonight for Lenny or the players

Helsinki must be knocked out. The previous 2 Euro campaigns have been about learning. Now is the time to deliver

CL football is a must this season if the squad is to improve

    Don’t let us down guys

  24. Total mega hun reporting in ‘The herald’ today. Unless you have the ‘hard’ copy it is impossible to appreciate the sycophancy.

A less than significant bit on the front page about Chris Hoy. Then a huge white on black headline ‘Sports tycoon Mike Ashley to buy stake in Rangers,’ with a photograph taking up about a third of the length of the page. He’s buying a stake, we read, except in the actual report ‘….it is speculation….’ And Ashley’s company will take over merchandise sales and JJB will be another outfit stuffed.

Continuing to page 7, another photo of Ashley and an almost quarter page report on the ‘fans’ relief’ for them to be playing at Ibrox.

Move to the sports page. Richard Wilson, that impartial reporter, takes about two-thirds of the page with ‘This is Rangers, it doesn’t get any bigger….’, a quote from Kevin Kyle and an article on the three signings and a huge photograph of last night’s crowd. Less than a quarter of the page is devoted to another Scottish club playing a huge game in Europe.

I have resolutely bought ‘The Herald’ for around fifty years. I suffered Darryl Broadfoot and had a temporary ban, which didn’t last long. But that is it. I will never buy another ‘Herald’ for a long time, if ever and my wife will divorce me because she won’t be able to do the crossword and puzzles.

  25. The removal of the timestamp for refreshing purposes is a real pain for iPhone users

Someone earlier was gonna try google chrome app to see if that gave a viable alternative but I don’t think Ive seen any feedback

    Thoughts anyone?

  26. The rules were bent to allow the newco huns into the SFL.

They are not entitled to be there.

    Scottish football is bent.

  27. It is written that tonights game will be difficult………that’s the way it is, but I’m hopeful we’ll do enough…………….
