Rodgers, revisionism and reticence

214

Brendan Rodgers did not last as long at Celtic as he now has at Leicester but the wheels came off the bogey far sooner in Glasgow.  His third season in the Midlands will not reach the heights or performance levels achieved earlier, but yesterday’s win over his former club, Liverpool, underlines his abilities.

The money on offer in Glasgow broke new records here but was a fraction of what was available across the EPL, or in China, where wages on offer in the summer of 2018 were lifechanging for someone already on a multimillion pound contract.

Revisionism is now a popular pastime when recounting Brendan’s era in Glasgow.  Having won the seven domestic trophies open to him, while qualifying for both Champions League group stages before that summer of 2018 pivot, he owed Celtic little, although honesty and frankness with the support is a prerequisite.  Creating crisis when you don’t get what you want is unworthy.

The biggest surprise for many is that he remains in Leicester after two and a bit successful seasons there and the same in Glasgow.  That’s five years throwing aces like an Aussie bowler.  In the last two years, Manchester United, Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea have all changed manager, Brendan was overlooked on each occasion.  Why?

‘It’s all about Brendan’ explains it.  He played the media and fans at both Liverpool and Celtic to his own ends, to the detriment of his employers.  Big clubs with choices will be reticenct to throw the dice with him.  If he is in the market again, he’ll be looking for the desperate, not the aspirational.

  1. GENE on 29TH DECEMBER 2021 4:20 PM

It is with the deepest sadness that I post the passing of my younger brother James – only 57. It became apparent that the stroke he suffered on Christmas Eve was going to be fatal.

Your prayers for the repose of his soul would be appreciated.

    —————————————————————————————

My heart goes out to you Gene. I lost my own brother earlier this year, to cancer. Only 54 years of age.

May God welcome James into his loving embrace.

  2. Gene,

Sincere condolences. So sorry 57 is no age at all.

Wee prayer said for all the family.

    RIP James.

  3. Rodgers and Lennon..

BR first. I was about 14 when Jock Stein was being mentioned for the Old Trafford job and I remembered dreading the thought of us losing the great man. Rodgers sneaking away during the night was bad enough for me, now in my 60s, but my immediate thoughts were for the young fans who idolised this guy. Not a thought for anyone but himself.

Neil Lennon endured far more phyical and mental abuse in good old Bonnie Scotland than anyone in the history of British sport. To work under such conditions, and be successful, is testament to the man’s resolve. Months before the end of his time at CP, practically every player’s form went backwards, some of whom now transformed by Ange. Lennon was well rewarded for this abysmal failure (and yes I know its in his contact), hence the six month hang-on.

Both Lennon and Rodgers left under a cloud, both in my opinion, tainting their Parkhead records forever.

Peter lawwell had his mitts in both situations.

  4. BR`s manner of leaving sullied his reputation with us but overall he did a superb job . I remember him positively.

Don`t quite get all the certainty that Paul is in the pocket of Peter Lawwell. Is it not just possible that Paul thinks PL did a really good job at Celtic? His wages would certainly suggest that he did.Unless, of course, DD is in the habit of throwing money away. Unlikely.

    Gene.

Sorry to hear your sad news.

  5. Condolences to Gene on the loss of his brother.

Condolences also to others who have been bereaved this year.

  6. Gene, so sorry to read of this devastating news

Thoughts and Prayers are with both James and all the family

    🙏🙏🙏

May perpetual Light Shine Upon you James

    And

    May you Rest in Peace

    🙏🙏🙏

Jings the DR are really scrapping the barrel with this hun story, about a 21 year old no one has heard.

‘And it seems midfield is an area of concern with reports now linking New York City youngster Sands with a move to Glasgow.’

  8. Acht Gene – so sorry to hear your wee brother has passed away – such an unfathomable shock for you and your whole family.

Our thoughts are with you and yours.

  9. Perhaps Celtic require a musical director to and not a director of football to get our hamstring quintet playing sweet music again. Any word on our big Greek lump coming back from the land of the lame and lazy to start playing football again, long time no see.

Just wondered if our Japanese superstar has to be running all over the place like a blue arsed fly during a match putting his suspect hamstrings …..there’s the dreaded word again………..under pressure.

We notice all the media attention is on Ange while Van Bronchorst goes along nicely under the radar getting results.

  10. 12 trophies in a row – quadruple treble – of which BR won 7, Does that mean that the much maligned Neil Lennon won the other 5? I’m guessing it does, the barrage of flak he got on here (of which I contributed) during the failed 10 in a row season, seems to have affected my memory! It would appear though that he’s been written off as a dud as no one seems prepared to take a chance on him as their manager,

Heartbreaking . It’s going to make Christmas feel quite different for you and your family for the foreseeable future . God bless .

  12. condolences Gene.

losing a sibling , no matter their age, is a terrible burden, be strong.

‘he (Rodgers) owed Celtic little, although honesty and frankness with the support is a prerequisite’

That’s a fair point, so why did you continually back Lawwell, who lied to shareholders for many years?

He was even involved in the SWA which actually gave our rivals advantages which weren’t in the rule book.

You eulogised Lawwell when he left in a ‘were not worthy blog’ that I still cringe at.

Nothing in it, before or since about Lawwell lying.

How do you expect anyone to take you seriously?

  14. GENE

I am so sorry to read about your brother. Words seem so inadequate at this time, but sincere condolences to you and your family on a tragic, unanticipated loss.

  15. Gene……Our Loved ones can be taken away from us…..but nothing can take away our memories of our Loved ones….

‘ Creating crisis when you don’t get what you want is unworthy’

Sure Paul, the nerve to complain when the accountant decided to signed players for him that he didn’t want, and didn’t sign the players he did want due to his ineptitude then letting the cat out of the bag due to Rodgers being the first manager at Celtic since O’Neill who wasn’t a yes man and who wasn’t going to stand for Lawwell’s crap.

  17. Gene.

Really sorry to hear your tragic news.

Thinking of you and your loved ones, at this sad and difficult time.
