Rogic’s next contract

929

Tom Rogic is well within his rights to take time to consider his next contract.  He is thriving at Celtic, but with a year left on his current deal, the future is open.  Front and centre of his mind, of all players’ minds, will be the dirty little subject.  The money paid to lesser talents than Tom in England is incredible, Tom is well within his rights to ponder his position in the food chain.

Then there is his place in the Celtic squad.  Brendan Rodgers is continually looking to improve the team.  It doesn’t matter who you are, you cannot be sure of a place well into the future.

There are also reasons to consider why Celtic might be a good fit for him.  He is not the archetypal English Premier League player, all physique and running.  Tom is a throwback to not so long ago when craft on the ball got you into the team, not the ability to burst a lung for 90 minutes.  All too often, he’s a 60 minute star.

Evidence is everywhere that he is a big game player and proven match winner, but he is not going to temp a title chasing team from England, instead it would be the bottom half battlers who are most likely to be interested in him.  He’s not a natural fit.  Better to stay with the champions.

That was me ole Maw’s description of Celtic supporters,

” Aye away an see the Celtic yer a Saturday Kafflik ” usually followed with the

obligatory ” fit ye better ye went tae Mass ”

No idea what she was referring to.

For some years ALDI didn’t open on Sunday here in the UK – but they gave in to commercial pressures.

Two of my uncles were on the Exeter which was badly damage by the Graf Spee in the Battle of the River Plate. It was out of commission for about a year and upon returning to service it was sent to the far east (two uncles back on board) to escort allied craft in and out of Singapore. Sadly she got into a bit of a stramash with the Japanese Navy and was very badly damaged again….trying to make her escape, she was sunk and most of the crew (including two uncles) were captured and put in a Japanese Concentration camp where one of my uncles fell in love with a beautiful Japanese girl who delivered the rations.

Sadly it turned out that she was in fact already in a relationship with the camp commander and taking it very personally he had my Uncle Alec flogged.

However they did manage to escape as did about half the crew, the other half either having died or unable to travel.

My uncles Alec and Willie always said that they never really had a lot of luck in their life.

I often pointed out that having me as a nephew probably made up for it. :)

When the priest visited our house it was the only time my father never swore or shouted at me, so funny watching him nearly explode and trying to be polite because the priest was in…. he kicked my bahookie when the priest had left but it was worth it every time

I was about 9 or 10 and hiding in my cubby hole in the loft in our house in Old Monkland when there was a knock at the door.

I knew it would be for me and I made ready to skeedaddle via the skylight, a half house leap onto next door neigbour’s shed and over the fence to the piggery. I had just got half out onto the roof when ma sister Jean called up the stairs ‘It’s the priest for you Matt’.

Immediately every event that could have involved the priest went through my mind and having no specific guilt I worked out it would probably be about taking an extra Altar boy session. So I scampered back in, dropped through the hatch and belted down the stairs to meet the padre.

    Sadly it wasn’t ‘Priest’.

Whenever we had visitors, our Jean always put on her posh voice. I had heard ‘it’s the Priest‘ when what she had shouted was ‘it’s the Police‘.

I’ll save the gory details for another time, but I’m sure that’s why we call them the ‘Polis’….so as we don’t mix them up wae the ‘Priest’.

Gerry, sorry I never replied to your post last night about Irvine Bhoy’s you tube footage of our goals in the Eighties. I was at a 50th in Ayr last night.

A lot of great memories came back when I watched the footage. Frank McGarvey , Tommy Burns and Paul McStay were the stand outs with honourable mentions to Murdo McLeod , Davie Provan and Brian McClair.

I’m glad you enjoyed watching them .
