Roll up, roll up, crap club

821

The Rangers International share prospectus contained references about league reconstruction possibly expediting the club’s ascent to the Scottish Premier League for the first time.  This was never on anyone else’s agenda and was merely the latest manifestation of the train of thought that Scottish football could not, and would not, consider life without ‘Rangers’ in the top flight, or perhaps one division below.  We can only hope that the company’s budgeting was not dependent on this aspiration.

Even the most ardent advocates of the belief structure that a ‘Rangers’ branded company is wanted and needed by the rest of the game must now accept ample evidence exists that their flat earth claims are folly.  For the record, Scottish football no more needs Celtic than it did Rangers, we are a lumbering albatross around their necks.

The Rangers chief executive, Charles Green, makes a valid point about the remainder of his club’s season, “If this [12-12-18 reconstruction] does happen, what is the point of us finishing the season?

“We might as well have a winter break from now until August. I can’t see any point in carrying on with meaningless matches.”

Crap club

As many have pointed out, his is the same purpose as the teams in each division who are free of relegation threats and already out of title/promotion contention – it’s called sport, but all teams in the SFL Third Division are effectively now playing for the joy of the game itself, which is pretty much what most of the do anyway.  Let’s hope Mr Green’s comments are not widely reported to those he is trying to sell tickets to.  It was astutely reported that Green has the makings of a PT Barnum about him, but rubbishing your own product is more Gerald Ratner than Barnum.

Roll up, roll up

By contrast, PT Lawwell’s comments on the proposed reorganisation, “To be fair, it is one of the very infrequent times when the greater good of the game has been taken into account”, could be taken straight from the consensus-builder’s manual.  It remains to be seen how best to serve the greater good, but any solution has to work for every club, not just one or two.

Delighted Terry Butcher is staying in the Highlands.  Great news for Inverness and the SPL.  I’m enjoying this season; more please.

    So in their desperation the sevconians are now trotting out the oldest pub argument about them being the biggest club.

    Fair enough, lets use some criteria and see if we can be objective enough to come up with an answer.

    I heard a similar debate a few months ago on Talksport, think it was started between Man U and Liverpool but went on to Spurs V arsenal and Newcastle v Sunderland.

    The criteria they used were…. History and achievement, Fan base, club’s current status and stadium.

    History…..if any hun was totally honest they would swap their extra 11 leagues for one European Cup in a heartbeat. Celtic have appeared in 4 European cup semis to Rangers 1,including a second final.. In fact Rangers have an embarrassing record in Europe’s premier tournament, which is where any major club’s achievements should be gauged. If domestic success was all that mattered (as they speak of world record titles) then that makes Rangers a more successful club than Real Madrid, as it does Linfield.

    When it comes to history, even leaving aside the non football stuff, like Uefa awards and Uefa bans, there is only one winner.

    Fan base….I would agree that with Scotland being a protestant country, The Rangers have a bigger potential support, but only in Scotland. When it come to worldwide fan base, Celtic have the bigger support and I dont think anyone would argue with that. On the domestic front it can also be said that Celtic have a more loyal home following as figures for the last 15 years or so will back up. Sevco are enjoying a reactionary 40k plus in div 3 but this same support dont show up for Champions league games like Malmo (27k) compared to Celtic’s 53k v Helsinki…..

    Current status….no need to comment

    Stadium…..!0k bigger capacity at CP, opening venue for Commonwealth games, further developement planned, atmospherically acclaimed the best in Europe on CL nights and endorsed by Villanova, Xavi, Iniesta, Maldini, Seedorf and others.

    How much more proof do they need?

    How can the FA not want us?

    ——————————————————————————–

    Given the talk of Rangers wanting away from Scotland surely joining the English leagues is the easiest option?

    So why are the FA not keen on us joining? We have, on a consistent basis, been in the top 5 for attendances in the country and our fan base is nationwide which means a full crowd is basically a stick-on.

    I’m not suggesting we go into the Premier League because the team we have just now is nowhere near competitive enough to stay in the league but surely the FA could make room for us in League 2? We’d be better for business than all the clubs in the lower divisions.

    IMO the FA are daft to not even entertain the thought of having us in England.

    We’re a great club, have a fan base that is incredible and would be a great addition to the leagues. How can the FA not want us?

    I think Rangers in the English leagues and getting the money they get would win the EPL.

    We would be an attraction to a sheikh or something if we were in that league.

    Re: How can the FA not want us?

    ‘Quintessentially British’…we’ve more national identity than half of the clubs and people down in England. I care not a jot what anyone says; ten years in that Premiership and we’d be the biggest club in Britain.

    I can only see some kind of Euro Super League proposal getting us out of this hall of knives. Sad thing is, would we even get considered in our current state ?

    =============================================

    Re: How can the FA not want us?

    Fifa and UEFA could always say that we are a special case, that they are allowing us to leave our league because everyone in the Scottish leagues hate us

    =====================================================

    Re: How can the FA not want us?

    ——————————————————————————–

    I think there could be a possibility of us proving that we are a ‘special case’ if we can prove, in a court of law, corruption against us by the SFA/SPL.

    ====================================================

    Re: How can the FA not want us?

    We have as much rights to be in the English leagues as some of the teams that are there. In 1886–87 we reached the semi-final of the FA Cup “before the Mhanks were even founded by brother Wally and the bigots”. So we must have been a member of the FA then. If we looked in to it it may be our divine right to play in England or at least in the FA Cup.

    Yes, that’s happening -and more to follow. Real Radio taken over by new masters from London who wanted shot of the phone in nonsense. Rumours of Herald and Scotsman merging to survive and with Capital now controlling more listeners than Clyde in Glasgow – Capital, Smooth and Real Radio – all football free, pressure on them too from their foreign masters. Poor old MSM!

    ………………………………….

    He’ll mend them all. It started with ‘Thugs and Thieves’ but the lies, obfuscation and denial that we have witnessed in recent years – honest mistakes, demonisation of Neil Lennon v. sanctification of ‘Walter’ and ‘Ally’, denial of Sevco as new entity (140 year history) and refusal to properly investigate EBTs and dual contracts when the story of the year was there to be told taken together with influence of Media House has led to the MSM almost destroying the game in Scotland. they have been and remain a malign influence. Traynor has been flushed out of his supposed ‘neutral’ pressman position, Darryl King has taken refuge in the USA and the rest will fall too.

    I don’t think we should estimate the influence of the Celtic support (along with fair minded supporters of other teams) have played in challenging, exposing and reducing their influence eg by the boycott of the Daily Record.

    TET, I’ve not been offshore since about 2004 and that was in Tunisia where we went off in french choppers wearing shorts and flip flops, that was an interesting gig.

    I never liked the north sea myself, I was on the Brent D when the chopper went in the water off the spar in 91 and that made me think about what I was doing. Stuck it for a while and then came back to the beach an went down the Borneo, Kazakhstan, Norway blah blah office jockey route. But for a young single guy it’s a great way to build a bank balance and for a young guy with family and commitments it’s a great way to fulfil them.
