Rosenborg a shadow of former self

874

Congratulations to Celtic, who last night became the first Scottish team to win a European tie since, Celtic, last season. While I am sure we would all have preferred to face Dundalk in the next Champions League qualifying round, a trip to Norway to face Rosenborg will be welcome by the club.

Rosenborg are not the same force we faced 16 years ago, and even that team was a shadow of the team who tested Real Madrid a few seasons earlier. The Norwegians succumbed to the inevitable forces of economic plunder, as clubs from richer leagues picked off their talent at increasingly earlier ages.

We should have more than enough in the tank for this one.

  1. No matter what anyone or here thinks Celtic have went along with UEFA and said there were banners in support of para militaries, not may be but are, so the investigation will no doubt proceed with those responsible held to account, I think Leigh Griffiths is a cracking player, now he finds himself suspended and unavailable not through injury, I hope he finds other ways to enjoy victories that do not lead to this sanction, as someone posted earlier we only have Moussa and Leigh as strikers, so would it be better he misses the home or away game against Rosenborg, I think we will need him more in the away tie.

    The GB are every bit as much Celtic Supporters as those who came on the supporters buses and stood in the Jungle singing about Argentina, Gadaffi, Mad Dog McGlinchey, Souness’ wife, Princess Di and others.

    And some of them went to uni too.

    Not an opinion.

  3. The UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) has announced the following decision:

    • To order the partial closure of the Linfield FC Stadium during the next (1) UEFA competition match in which Linfield FC would play as the host club, and, in particular Linfield FC shall closed South stand lower sector I of the stadium.

    The charges against Linfield FC related to the throwing of objects (Art. 16 (2) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations (DR) and a field invasion by supporters – (Art. 16 (2) DR).

    ‘The Wreckers are chanting about things that have nothing to do with football’

    I don’t like criticising Celtic fans. But I have to take odds with at least a section of them. What I did on Saturday was something I’ve felt like doing for quite a while.

    It’s my sincere wish that it will have a lasting effect, as I’m sure that the vast majority of our fans do. Celtic supporters have enjoyed a lot of good times during the past few years and all of it was due to hard work – by the players, the backroom boys and the directors.

    The fans too have played a major role and we don’t want to see it all ruined now by the bad element who have recently emerged. Nor do we want to see the fans of long standing who followed us through the lean years discouraged from watching us play.

     This bad element – or the wreckers as the View called them last week – are singing and chanting about things which have nothing to do with football.

    Surely there are enough Celtic songs without introducing religion or politics or anything else.

    The thoughts of our greatest manager but then again I suppose the minority who sing these songs think they know better.

    I admire the atmosphere the GB bring to matches at CP and name of their banner and displays have been bold and clever, but they have again crossed a line on acceptable conduct. May I just remind all that STHs are subject to the following :

    Standards of conduct

    Holders of Season Tickets are regarded by the Club as ambassadors for the Club and its supporters world- wide. Holders are required to conduct themselves in a manner being this status when travelling to and a ending any Club match during the Season. Drunkenness, foul, insulting, offensive or abusive language or behaviour; racist, discriminatory or sectarian behaviour, remarks, songs, chants, banners or displays; and the promotion or endorsement of any political organisation are not permitted within the Stadium or on the Club’s property, or at any matches involving the Club.

    Breaches of conduct.

    If the Holder breaches these Terms, the Ground Regulations, the Unacceptable Conduct rules or if the Holder commits any criminal offence at any match involving the Club, the Club may take any or all of the following steps:

    (a) issue a warning;

    (b) refuse entry to the Stadium;

    (c) eject the Holder from the Stadium;

    (d) con scate and/ or deac vate the Season Ticket;

    (e) exclude the Holder from future entry to the Stadium and/or withdraw the ability to buy additional tickets for such period as the Club considers appropriate, in all of the circumstances;

    (f) terminate this agreement; and

    (g) take separate legal action on against the Holder.

    As a shareholder I am again unhappy that club finances are used to pay fines for the actions of a few who feel they can act with impunity, so …

    … why don’t Celtic divide any fine by the number of occupants of the standing area and add it to their next season ticket price. If you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime as they say.

    Perhaps then if they realised the cost of their actions they might think twice before knowingly cause the club further fines through unacceptable behaviour.

    And how long before UEFA say – enough fines, we will close part (guess which area would be first to be closed) or all of the ground for the next CL fixture (closed doors) ?

    And how do you think the rest of the fans would feel about that ?

    Another solution might be for Celtic’s own ground security team to vet each banner for its suitability, then if there are any issues they are equally culpable.

    This ongoing scenario simply cannot continue ad infinitum …

    BSR,

    Agreed if offence is the order of the day then a banner about the corrupt hypocracy at UEFA and SFA would have confused a few. No doubt such a banner would also attract a fine but it would be a wee bit more difficult for our own hand wringers to condemn.

    I expected Celtic to make representation and challenges the charge, which I believe was Leigh was provocative.

    It was done at the end of the game in front of our support, a good Q.C would be asking where is the provocation.

    BMCUW.

    I’m aware about not appealing a yellow, however the charge was for five yellows, again whilst the Q.C was defending L.G. He could have mentioned that the ref was a fanny and at it, well maybe more eloquently put than that, but I’m not uni educated. :-))

    The statement from Celtic has thrown the Green Brigade under the bus. I suspect the Club are furious that the GB chose to use Brendan Rodgers. We cannot have our Manager used in such a way, it’s an insult and an embarrassment to him, his family and his friends as well as many other Celtic supporters. The GB have gone too far this time. Today we may well have seen the end of the GB as we know it.

  18. AuroraBorealis79 on

    Yea, I am sure a partial stadium closure would do a word of good against a club that cant even fill a third of their ground.

    So it’s ok to commemorate war crimes and criminals with a minutes silence imposed annually while associating victorious freedom fighters with religious fanatics like IsIS.

    Then Topup it off by listening to these clowns lecture us about what is relevant at a football game, aye right.

    As I said,it’s a stupid rule when there is the possibility of such a severe penalty.

  28. I am inclined to agree with the TimReaper, I reckon it was the use of Brendan on the banner which really spooked the Board..

    It is a pity, when things are going so well on the pitch, that we are constantly involved in non football spats.

    I expect another fine, there is a big difference between displaying what EUFA call an illicit banner & throwing a bottle at an opposition player.

    As I said earlier I would have preferred if neither banner was displayed but there is no point in worrying about it now.

    My thoughts going forward are purely related to game next Wednesday.

    As things stand we could use the same banners against Hearts on 5th Aug without fear or favour never mind sanction.

    But to break UEFA rules even only on an annual basis is a ludicrous situation for Celtic and TGB to find ourselves in.

    Whilst ‘hand wringers’ must accept that TGB is merely a section of the Celtic support the brilliant communicative conception of superior graphic art and message on this occasion again, requires redirection to suit all of the Celtic support including our hand wringers.

    We can’t seem to take on the SFA never mind UEFA and its myriad of bent rules underpinned by bent politics.
