Rosenborg a shadow of former self

874

Congratulations to Celtic, who last night became the first Scottish team to win a European tie since, Celtic, last season. While I am sure we would all have preferred to face Dundalk in the next Champions League qualifying round, a trip to Norway to face Rosenborg will be welcome by the club.

Rosenborg are not the same force we faced 16 years ago, and even that team was a shadow of the team who tested Real Madrid a few seasons earlier. The Norwegians succumbed to the inevitable forces of economic plunder, as clubs from richer leagues picked off their talent at increasingly earlier ages.

We should have more than enough in the tank for this one.

  1. The Provo banner was entirely uncalled for. The GB had the opportunity to support the team last Friday in Belfast but took the club’s advice not to travel. Now if they had and had displayed the same banners I would have admired their courage. Since they didn’t and chose instead to do it last night I feel that they can only be described as hypocrites at best and cowards at worst!

We all know that there are enough sick nutters among the loyalist/unionist community that would be only to willing to take action on Brendan’s extended family that actually live in the north, yet the GB feel it’s ok to put Brendan and them at potential risk. To me that’s inexcusable especially when they refused to go there themselves!

If they get their section closed that’s fair enough to me but should they get the ground closed they should be told to GTF once and for all. CFC is far more that them and it’s time the support saw and recognised that fact!

I remember seeing the Celtic View front page and being surprised. Most of the reb songs last night were started in the Jock Stein/ North Stand corner. Where the effigies were dangled last Sept v the Glasgow huns.

People will make what they want of the publicity and the UEFA charge and the implications thereafter. Regardless, attempting to use and align Brendan Rodgers in such a way was a huge miscalculation. It was bang out of order and we wont see it again, I’m sure of that. I cant speak for Brendan but I’m pretty sure will be unimpressed given the progressive way he has spoken in the past.

Honestly, I don’t want to try and be controversial or whatever, but in Ireland there has been a huge fall in those following Celtic. Yes, that has many reasons, not least the packaging of the PL by Sky. Yet, I now find myself constantly having to defend my support of Celtic (not to members of the Unionist / Loyalist community, but to fellow Nationalists / Republicans). The standard view of me is that I could only follow Celtic because of my political / religious views or beliefs. Clearly the standard of Scottish football is no longer what it was and I always admit that, but insist that my love of Celtic was given to me by my father, as his was, and so on. Yet, these self appointed CELTIC SUPPORTERS feel they have the right to dictate what a Celtic supporter should be. It’s 2017 for goodness sake. I lived through the conflict and for the first time in my life have friends from a Unionist / Loyalist background and yes some of them support Sevco. I want to be proud of Celtic as a football club and promote them as a club open to all. I bring my Tricolour to home games and see Celtic as a vital part of my Irish identity, but I recognise how others can see me because of that – enough said – I just feel very peeved today when I should be enjoying one of the best footballing eras in Celtic’s history.

  9. UEFA to sanction Celtic for wearing the wrong training top on one qualifier but a decade of cheating false registrations for UEFA tourneys to go ignored.

Allen condemns IRA displays at Parkhead

Jul 20, 2017 Posted in: General, Sport

The Ulster Unionist Party’s Sports spokesperson, Andy Allen MLA, has condemned the display of banners supporting IRA terrorism at last night’s Champions League Qualifying match between Celtic and Linfield in Glasgow.

    Andy Allen said:

“I was absolutely sickened by some of the banners displayed by Celtic supporters at Parkhead on Wednesday night, at the game between Celtic and Linfield.

“Two in particular were nothing short of glorification of terror. One showed a masked IRA man and the other was a parody of the old ‘sniper at work’ sign which the IRA erected throughout South Armagh.

“These banners were displayed in a section of Parkhead occupied by the so-called ‘Green Brigade’, a Celtic fan group. This is not the first time their displays have been provocative and offensive. Indeed, in 2013 they caused Celtic to be fined by UEFA for a display that included depictions of Bobby Sands and William Wallace.

“The Scottish FA and UEFA must take action and Celtic FC needs to root these people out. Terrorist displays have no place in any football ground and Celtic should not tolerate this type of behaviour. Decent Celtic fans will be absolutely sickened and appalled by these incidents.

“Questions must also be asked of the policing and stewarding arrangements at Wednesday night’s game. Were these huge banners and their content not checked prior to their admission to the stadium? And did the Police not realise the banners were glorifying terrorism?

“Last night brought shame to Celtic FC and Scottish football.”

I see our hand wringers are out in force to have a go at the support as usual while ignoring a far more frequent and dangerous infringement the club refuse to remedy. The blocked passage, when are they going to anti up and get that passage unblocked. Stadium enema anyone.

I wouldn’t be feeling like you have to defend/justify your support of Celtic to anyone. I’ve met people like that too, judging an entire support by the actions of less than 1% of idiots.

Those types of folk tend to have a few skeletons in the closet. You mentioned the rise of the EPL, should we judge all Irish EPL fans by the actions of English hooligans?

Is that what really attracts THEM to the EPL? Because the quality of the football is vastly overrated, as we see at Champions League and International level regularly.

I’d be hitting back at anyone in no uncertain terms if they demanded I justify supporting my club. These holier than thou types need brought down a peg or two.

  16. The “rebel” from the jungle was on again. I have to say that from 1969 onwards I didn’t meet many Celtic chaps. I would have remembered, I assure you. The reference to the Dark would not be caught by many of the loyal persuasion. The black beret with an Easter Lily on it was clever but stupid, but who from EUFA is going to put their connotations on that?

On a night of lovely football from Celtic, we are talking about a banner and the Green Brigade—-wise up! The danger is that the Green Brigade do not become what they despise, a mirror image of the Huns. It’s very easy to think yourself superior to another, but it’s not easy to be a Republican. It’s very hard. Our founders were Tone, Emmett, Henry Joy et al. Hard act to follow.

  22. FOLLOWING Wednesday night’s European tie at Celtic Park against Linfield, Celtic Football Club have issued the following statement.

Any support for a paramilitary or proscribed terrorist organisation has no place at Celtic Park. The Club has been consistent in condemning such conduct on the very few occasions in the past when it has occurred at Celtic Park. It is unfortunate that such a small minority of the crowd at Celtic Park last night behaved in such a way.

We know that the Celtic support will join us in condemning such behaviour. Events last night have resulted in charges from UEFA in relation to the paramilitary banners and unsafe behaviour in a section of the Celtic support. The Club has commenced an inquiry and will take appropriate action.

  23. The Ultras new fine well what would happen, they would get the headlines not CFC , that’s where we are right now they just won’t be told, I said it years ago since the John Reid’s days on the board, in came the Uni Mob, and we have never got rid of them, student activists with an agenda living off my football club on what they use for a political agenda.

I warned everyone on here years ago the enemy is within, so another fine? A closed doors game at Celtic Park? Two closed door games?

What was they’r end game? A distraction from the #stripthetitles push we all have got going and they are not getting any recognition for it as it’s every Celtic fan, and not just them?

To be very honest my opinion only, they’r not to street smart at all, as a matter of fact it was dumb, stupid, arrogant, pompous and Hunnish , any class we boast about our club this mob destroy it at every opportunity the get, look at they’r previous ffs?

As I said earlier I hope they don’t come away with another Con job like the Match the fine lark, or the other old chestnut the Ultra food drive, great cause the food drive but you can see right through it, I do causes myself but never at the behest of The Ultras not a chance.

So where to now? The ….statement from The Ultras? That ones getting a bit played out too very tiresome there are lots of people not in The Ultras, they are the Marmite at C P some like them, some don’t, as far as I’m concerned The Ultra organisers can leave any time they like they won’t be missed, but ffs let the kids alone who go there to sing and support Celtic, they’r days are numbered (the organisers) sooner rather than later would suit me just fine.

But! It’s only my opinion, same as everyone else has.

  24. Linfield did their bit for Sevco and deflection is at full pace where Scottish Football fans are now force fed the tenuous ‘Celtic and the Provos ‘.

Instead of building the case for the only issue in Scotland which remains cheating and title stripping, TGB took another wrong turn when we rose to the neanderthal.

TGB should join modern current causes then see if UEFA cover them with the same microscopic precision.

Time to Bin the Bonfire Song ..

But the only ticket I could get was for the Georgie Rd end,

In the Hearts Family Section ..

It was either that, or watch it on the Telly ..

Celtic won the League, and I got to see it live ..

However, one horrible memory from that day was

when the Celtic Support sang the Bonfire Song ..

I listened to a young Hearts fan asking his dad

why Celtic wanted to burn them ..

The young lad would have been about 10 years old ..

He didn’t differentiate between Celtic Supporters and Celtic ..

He understood it in his own mind that Celtic wanted to Burn them ..

How in Gods name can we go from winning awards in Seville,

to singing about Burning people, as this young boy understood it ..

I have written this message with a heavy heart, as I firmly believe

that what was created in Seville by the Celtic Support was magical,

but sadly I think this legacy is now being destroyed ..

I beg each and every Celtic fan to Bin this song forever ..

    Thank You ..

  26. The Green Brigade knew that the banner would lead to a UEFA charge, they are not stupid, they consistently put their own agenda before the good of Celtic.

The atmosphere they (and the non GB members in the standing section) is terrific but they have to screw the nut or they will get Celtic into serious trouble, if we are not already.

UEFA are indeed useless at policing their own competitions, Financial Fair Play being one excellent example but we are an easy target and the Provo banner was unacceptable.
