Running out of road against the Rotters

74

It has no relevance for tonight, but the best news from Brendan Rodgers media appearance yesterday was that Cameron Carter-Vickers and Daizen Maeda will return to action for Saturday’s game against Hearts.  Both are huge players, especially so on Champions League nights, but the urgency of that matter has passed.

The defence will inevitably line-up the same as it did at Rugby Park.  Liam Scales and Nat Phillips have both performed credibly in the Champions League this season, albeit the latter’s appearances have been limited.  Get things right in front of them and they will do so again.

Callum McGregor will return to his pivot position deep in midfield, but who partners Matt O’Riley in the other central mid role is up for grabs.  I expect Paulo Bernardo to get the nod.  David Turnbull has yet to be offered a new contract, making it likely that Brendan will use the opportunity to further develop Paulo.  Odin Holm’s chances have drifted.

Despite a lower return in front of goal, Kyogo remains at the top of our meritocratic Christmas tree.  He is likely to find more space against a Champions League side than a packed Scottish Premiership defence.  You’ll see the best of him tonight.

I hope Mikey Johnston enjoys himself.  He is another who is rapidly running out of contract at Celtic and may not see football at this level again.  The role of the winger has changed beyond recognition since the players (some of us) watched in the 80s.  Mikey is a throwback to that time, a player who can dribble past defenders to open up space.  Let’s see some of that against the Rotters.

Some might say it’s bitterness and jealousy and even resentment. Seeing someone from a normal background work hard, with no privilege, to achieve success in life and a prominent job and go on to succeed in that position for many years doing something in an industry many of us love but in a job few of us would really want to do, or have the balls or ability to do if it really came to it.

    …………….

    Utter BOLLOCKS !

Your are correct in one aspect….Lawwell had the ” Balls and Ability” to deliberately LIE to the RES.12 Bhoys.

For him ( in his position) to ALSO ” CLAIM” that he NEVER saw the 5 way agreement, beggars belief.

IF that were indeed ” TRUE”………That is Gross NEGLIGENCE ON Lawwells par given his role at Celtic FC.

He asked the RES.12 Bhoys to give him the ” Smoking Gun”…..He was handed the ” Smoking Gun”, but chose to use a CLOWNS PISTOL….with a wee Flag saying ” BANG” on it…when pulling the trigger.

As for being ” JEALOUS” ?…..I am only jealous of Kylie Minogues Boy Friends.

  2. Off to the game now and when I return to Arbroath sometime after 1:am, I will be a year older !!

I hope Celtic give me a good present but I actually suspect a draw.

    Cheerio for now.

  3. Strange Champions League game tonight, I can understand some fans giving it a miss, time of year, travelling some distance, work the next day etc. The money in the bank might mean the board couldn’t care less, but I think they should be worried.

Two disappointing Champions League campaigns in a row and the fans forking up a lot of their hard earned money to watch the mediocre performances could mean some fans thinking long and hard about the costs in the future.

.A victory tonight would maybe lift the spirits of players and fans as we approach probably the most important 5 League games of the season.

A VICTORY against Hertz would be a nice early Birthday present for me.

We might all feel we’ve aged a year by the full time whistle tonight ! -)))

  6. Lawwell revealed at the AGM that we owe the government £11.5m in taxes due to our huge profit last season. The one thing all governments excel at is wasting taxpayers money.

Here’s a suggestion. Spend every spare penny we have on the team and on stadium improvements or repairs so we don’t give the government a penny. We could have brought in another 5 or 6 projects for £11.5M. Why let the government waste our money when we are perfectly capable of doing so ourselves.

I’m sure our projects will learn a lot playing for our B team against the likes of Tranent juniors and East Kilbride thistle.

  8. Zero ambition in Europe since Seville, guess what else happened in 2003? Panic loan signings by Lawwell and Park,2 days before multiple Qualifiers, our most lucrative games of every season, 21 years on where are we? And before we get the ‘entitled ‘ bollox, the team with the best players and most money, usually wins the league. Ange was the only guy who spoke of ambition in the transfer market, to get guys 8n for next season’s CL.Him and Dominic McKay far too forward thinking for the CJ types from Reggie Perrin, who sit on our board ,and get re-elected unopposed but enjoy grace and favour benefits, without putting a single penny in to the Club. Rinse and repeat, with only a couple of exceptions in 21 years, pumped by Molde,Mitjyland and other European giants on the way.So let’s support a guy who lied to Shareholders, and took around £17 million, out of a business our size.So Lawwell is back pulling the strings, and Boy Wonder has unearthed the likes of Kwon and Phillips. Constantly going round in circles, and barely ahead of a skint huns team,72 million in the bank, plus this season’s 35 million. But the mantra is just spend an extra pound to stay ahead of the huns,if we do spunk this League, we’re gonna need a bigger car park

  9. Lawell is a liar, Lawell is a liar, Lawell is a liar…. NAH NAH NAH NAH NAH.

    Bloody Garngad Laptops.

Right onto tonight, who cares really? the league is the priority and we are making hard work of that.

I would imagine the people who have paid £60 allied with time and effort would really care about the game tonight.

Touchy touchy…..no need to resort to that.

  12. cant believe BR is going to select the Liverpool loanee to play tonight following his recent performances , we are crying out for development players to be tried at this level and get much needed game time, Bernardo must have it in his contract to play at this level , try something different other than the norm 4-3-3.

  13. In an ideal world we play well take the chances that we will create and finish up this season’s CL campaign on some kind of high. But we do not all live in an ideal world, some of us live in New Zealand. Now, does anyone know offhand if you can change your CL squad as you go along? Newcastle Utd have had untold injuries, we have had more than a few ourselves, and Arsenal took a few of their younger players to PSV last night, (didnt play them though) but dont know if they were originally in their squad. Got to be some kind of contingency for injuries, illness etc. No?

No real pressure on us, which might be a good thing, and if so we might just see a fine football match, and a victory in the Champions League. In an ideal world…

  14. Dear oh Dear, Mikey Johnston, I’m sure he’s a god enough lad but what has he ever done for Celtic? I cant remember one time I’ve thought Great Mikey well done, yet here he is back in the team again. He should be loaned out to Aberdeen. A spell working for Barry Robson would do him some good.

  15. I have never seen so many tickets up for grabs for any game. The Celtic Internet is inundated with tickets for sale.

We have much to play for tonight. There are many reasons fans vote with their feet but style of play is certainly a big one.

Put on a show Celtic, tonight and going forward

It is the Glasgow Celtic way.

The other CHs,good CHs,unless everyone in Sweden and Poland s wrong are not fit because BR has something in his head about them.Madess to have 4 CHs and nt rotate at times.Subs when we are well ahead.Game time of some description.Disasters,as we know can happen.Players need to be ready.BR did not think twice about rotating the midfield.Bumming up Holm,Turnbull, then droppiing them for Bernardo and Iwata who hardly had a look in,and putting them out in the cold again. As with the front 3,too scattergun for me.Not a settled bunch.

    ——————————————————————-

TB – I enjoy reading your posts. I even agree with you sometimes 😁 but this post has me confused (and I don’t mean the spelling) 😜

You appear to be critical of BR for not rotating his CH’s, suggesting the players need to be ready when called upon. You then compare with BR’s willingness to rotate his midfielders and forwards. But then you state that this rotation of players is too scattergun for you; not a settled bunch.

Are you saying BR should rotate his CH’s but stop rotating his forward players as you’d prefer a settled bunch in midfield/ upfront?

  17. pretty sure Fergus said that no 1 person or selected families would ever be in charge of the Club again,it’s worse now, these guys have real money

  18. 🍀 Celtic team v Feyenoord: Hart, A. Johnston, Welsh, Scales, Taylor, Tomoki, McGregor, O’Riley, Palma, Kyogo, M. Johnston.

  19. CELTIC: Hart, A.Johnston, Scales, Welsh, Taylor, Tomoki, McGregor, O’Riley, M.Johnston, Kyogo, Palma.

Subs: Bain, Morrison, Lagerbielke, Phillips, Turnbull, Holm, Oh, Bernardo, Forrest, Ralston, Frame

  20. Welsh’s starting spot is a curveball. Can’t say I’m disappointed to see him ahead of Philips (looks poor). But disappointed that BR thinks Lagerbielke isn’t viewed as a better option. Did we really spend (waste) money signing a player who is no better than Welsh (a player I’d hoped to be, at best, our 4th choice CH)?

Johnston’s form has dropped significantly since the start of the season, but he’s still a better option than Ralston imo (though his firm needs to pick up soon) .

Outwith CCV, Scales has earned his spot, so he has to start, so can’t argue with his inclusion.

Taylor is really our only option at LB, imo. I don’t buy into this theory that Scales should be moved out there.

I’d pick the same midfield 3. O’Riley is our best at number 10. Without Hatate, Calmac is our best option at number 8. Iwata is arguably the best option at number 6 (when playing Calmac further forward).

Kyogo is our first choice striker. Palma is our best available option out wide. So I’m happy to see them starting. The other wide spot could arguably be given to either Johnston, Yang or Forrest. Neither inspires me, unfortunately.

With such an uninspiring starting XI, it’s no surprise to see that the bench looks weak.

Will be watching tonight in hope rather than expectation 🤞
