There is something curious about the England national team.  While pretty much every other country around England’s calibre select players, on merit, from clubs large and small, for decades England appear caught emperor role, seldom selecting players outside a top clutch of clubs.

This made Southampton striker Rickie Lambert’s recent selection memorable, despite the fact that his club sit comfortably above several of England’s heavyweights, significantly as a consequence of Lambert’s play.

Fraser Forster has been the best goalkeeper in Britain for a year, but he is English, and he plays domestic football for the Scottish champions, so despite his Champions League credentials, England Roy Hodgson has not capped him.

With the incumbent “England’s number 1” producing ample material to have most national team managers hide their eyes, no matter what Hodgson thinks of his preferred keeper, today’s news coverage suggests he has been boxed into a corner.  If he plays Joe Hart in Brazil, and the keeper performs to his current level, Hodgson will carry the can for being the last man in England to see the obvious.  England managers have a long record of having to deal with strong media sentiment coming to bear on their selections.

I’d like to see Fraser get the recognition he deserves.  It would also be good for Celtic to be able to offer not only Champions League football, but also the chance to gain international recognition, at an ever-higher level.  Holding onto him is another story, but all of those who were so upset when we passed on Stipe Pletikosa to take Newcastle’s third choice will not be too upset at that.

  2. Why do Celtic persist with high balls into the box when 95% are cleared/dealt with by the opposition ? Could the coaching staff have a word with Forrest and ask him to cut in along the goal-line and deliver an ACCURATE pass to a team-mate instead of firing in long high balls which generally come to nothing. How’s about less of the square midfield passing and very fast breaks from winning the ball in mid-field .It only takes two accurate passes from mid-field to have a man in on goal with a serious goal-scoring opportunity ! Celtic to my mind seem to want to wait for the opposition to get 10 men behind the ball and then spend a frustrating time trying to break it down. The apparent lack of creativity in mid-field is a worry along with the desperate need for a Sutton type striker.Don’t like Stokes. If Brown was a goal-scoring midfielder then great, but he’s not.Quality striker+creative mid-fielder ASAP !! Still, could be worse.Nice to see the refused stonewaller at Firhill immediately after the “off-side” goal GIVEN at Easter Rd.If Celtic are struggling in a game almost inevitably a crucial “honest mistake” miraculously appears right on cue to favour the opposition who are also enjoying great leniency from the officials for persistent fouling.Last season 2 visits to Ross County-in first stonewall pen for Samaras refused,in 2nd valid goal by Commons denied-and that’s the “Wee” team. The pen that Madden gave for Utd at CP.The pen that Morton GOT at CP-how was that for vicious ,? The pen that Hearts got in the Cup Semi? ON AND ON IT GOES !. Celtic teams have to beat 14 men basically which means having some seriously CLASS players and right now we don’t.Here’s hoping.I enjoy reading your match threads.

I miss Philvisreturns’ postings. There were times when his use of language for humour bordered on genius and made me laugh out loud. I could be wrong but I think his disappearance was around the time of Thatcher’s death. I wouldn’t like to think so but perhaps some of the sentiments expressed on here then discouraged him from returning. Don’t get me wrong, I was as pleased as anyone else on here by her passing.

“Staggering ignorance and bias from STV newsreader John Mckay..

Ignorance – It partly comes from nonsensical notion that he didn’t get his big move to England – Arsenal, Man U or Liverpool being the Clubs of choice.

Bias – Interesting how many Ibrox Legends didn’t get this move – are they on the list? Mr Mc Culloch stayed with The Rangers because he was loyal. Mc Stay finished his career with Celtic because he never developed his potential and couldn’t get a move.

I hadn’t heard of either Fraser or Stipe but I did quickly form an opinion that Fraser was not as dominant as a man his size could be. He is a great shot stopper but in my opinion remains less dominant than a man his size could be.

I hope he gets the England gig as it will push his price up. I don’t expect we will retain his services beyond next summer but I won’t break my heart to swap him for £10m.

Celtic goalies font need to be brilliant IMO.

  25. I always struggled with the concept of celebrating someone dying. Didn’t sit at all well. Couldn’t really understand those that did. Whilst trying to rationalise it, I thought that perhaps the level of suffering endured by individuals due to her policies, equalled the level of ” hate” for Thatcher, varying from the “I can’t stand the woman, to the ” I wish she was dead”.

Me? Well, as I say, I couldn’t wish someone dead. I thought. Until that was I realised I thought the world would be a better place without Thatcher in it.

So isn’t that the same thing?

So where does that leave me? Glad she’s dead I guess if I’m to be totally honest!
