Scot Gov wants to talk about Celtic, not the deaths

427

If you want to criticise Celtic for taking a January holiday while the country suffers and you have been stuck at home for 10 months, go for it, there’s acres of space below.  The football bubble is difficult to reconcile when people are currently falling ill and dying in such numbers, the optics are poor; Celtic, really?

But if you are responsible for setting the rules of the football bubble, like the Scottish Government are, you are responsible for what is permitted within that bubble.

If you gave specific permission for Celtic’s trip to Dubai, like the Scottish Government did, you and you alone have no right to issue PR statements of condemnation.

This contrasts with the Scottish Government’s congratulatory comments for Newco after punishing their players who broke bubble rules, a marked contrast to their reaction after Celtic punished Boli Bolingoli.

I get that this Government is a world leader at PR, that their leader appears to spend much of her day preparing and delivering her message of PR brilliance and that they effortlessly dig into Celtic without self-awareness.

And I know this is a lot easier than their day job, like deciding whether to send infected patients to care homes or not, running an education system, controlling a police force who witness sectarian crime without concern, and ensuring NHS hospitals do not have to issue statements of regret after poor cleaning-related deaths.

All this magnificent PR keeps eyes away from how that day job is being performed.  Scotland has a death rate higher than all but six countries in the world, including countries run by incompetent fools, like the rest of the UK – who we continue to shadow for inexplicable reasons – and the US.

Your government wants people to talk about Celtic, not look at the death count.  The former is embarrassing and the latter is worse only in Peru, Belgium, Italy and three former Yugoslav countries.  I am not part of this cult.

  1. They mealy mouthed something about George Square which was from Yousaff which I seem to remember folk getting kettled, but, it wasnt those with Union Jacks who were.

  2. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

Well said, Paul, although it will fall on deaf ears within the CQN echo chamber.

  3. Good article Paul – and you forelock tuggers take note. It’s the lack of criticism of the establishment (government, judiciary, media etc) which has resulted in us not having a refereeing decision going our way in games versus the hun, since 1989.

  4. ‘If you gave specific permission for Celtic’s trip to Dubai, like the Scottish Government did…’

PR 101 plans would use evidence of that specific permission to promptly refute the GOV’s allegations that we were in some way doing a shitey thing. Do it ASAP, so that people are under no illusion as to the facts.

And the PR effort should brief all media (mainstream and social) to make sure club fans knew the Gov was an attempted reputation stitch-up. But such clarification and refutation isn’t even on the club website FFS. But what do our elders do…? Wait a bit – taking the PR body blows – then leak it out thru a trusty blog.

I agree with those saying I’d rather hear how Dubai was key to us overhauling our growing points deficit rather than a squirrelicious defence which further underlines this club’s inability to get basic stakeholder communications right.

  5. We all know it’s a cult and wee Krankie is up there with North Korea on masking her list of failures. Labour , Tories they are all the same—- useless. She’s is trying to broaden her appeal to the less bigoted huns. More importantly Celtic :

Firstly excellent James Forrest excellent article on Neil Lennon and why he should never have been the Celtic manager. Objective , factual and insightful. Ahem others take note.

Re Dermot Desmond latest musings on the fate of the Celtic manager and that he is in place until the end of the season. We have seen this season his decision making has not been the best. After the Sparta defeat the writing was on the wall and Lennon should have been replaced then. Even the Boli incident was a throwback to his previous slack regime at Lennoxtown where he was rarely there for 9AM start. Giving the players 4 days off after months of rest was the fatal decision for Boli to go AWOL ( in fact he didn’t think he didn’t do anything wrong as he happily posed for photos in the first row of his easyJet flight with his mask on—- unlike Krankie recently). He wasn’t the only person on that flight.

From Sparta defeat, to dropping points to all sorts then the surrender to them at Celtic Park —- again a decision should have been made by DD to remove him. The protests maybe irked him but when it gets to that position at Celtic there is virtually nothing a manager can do to turn it round. The defeat at Ibrox should see him go —- but no Dermot has decided again. Earlier change could have rescued a title bid as the first half performance on Saturday would have happened in October. I am convinced if the change had been made in time the season could have turned round especially with a January transfer window to come.

Why no change now then ?

Based on Lawwells central role in the collapse of the club over the last 18 months Dermot has a bigger decision to make around a new CEO. Having had a look at the background of his sons I would be surprised if any of them take up the CEO role —-happy to be wrong. One of the challenges when Fergie left Man U was that the CEO left at same time —- this is part of the reason the club has really struggled since. DD will be aware of this and managing change has to be done carefully. The next changes should be for the next decade of club. In an ideal scenario for DD would have Lawwell in place to be close to ECA or UEFA as European change comes —- although Brexit might impact all UK based clubs.

DD knows this season has been a horror story. The dogs in the street know it. The fanbase is angry and demanding change —- no majority shareholder can ignore that. A repeat next season when fans are back would mean Celtic would need to play in empty stadiums in order to protect the responsibles. In the streets they will need very thick skins.

The only question is the scale of the change —- maybe at 70 DD sells up as none of his sons want the CEO gig for whatever reason or maybe they are not up to all the political shenanigans of running the club in a hostile country. The manager is gone in name only ; a fundamental reboot is necessary and that involves a new CEO. It could be that DD at 70 years old is 50/50 on the best way ahead and that is why he plays for time to look and evaluate the options of Sale or wholesale change. The share price is depressed however Celtic is an attractive brand and would entice interesting characters.

So change is coming is what I read between the lines —- it’s just the scale off it.

  6. Tic- Duffy back for personal reasons seemingly ,Hughton had him at Brighton, and wants him at Nottingham Forest, ironically to replace McKenna, who flits between the subs bench and the physio room.

  7. DEFLECTION does’nt even scratch the surface of your article today Paul. Love to know what you have been promised to do the cowardly dastardly PR of our pathetic CEO and his hangers on . Think you should be seriously considering jumping ship Paul , you cannot continue to defend LAWELLS MASS INCOMPETENCE . You showed your true colours regarding the Res12 abandonment . This was by far the go to site for ordinary Celtic fans back in the day , it pains me to come on here now. Have stayed away the past couple of weeks but came back on today in the hope that you had finally come to your senses , how naive was I !!!! Dont worry guys the Board will engage with us soon ……..season ticket renewal aint that far away now . Absoloutely galling that we are where we are , and reading all about the past share issues would make you cry . Celtic were near Certain death, the fans stepped up and now they are treated like a piece of shit on Peter Lawells expensive shoes . Makes you want to go down the United of Manchester route

  8. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

GarryG’s and Ernie – from previous article, thank you for responses re Hugh Pennington.

    IMHO, Ernie called it right.

if you have the time look at the full offer for 2005, I seem to recall that having an Irish billionaire as a part owner was quite welcomed, and seen as going to bring more of the Irish Coolmoore mafia to the table as it was obvious we would go to the new UK League set up.

Maybe DD and us were both duped

  10. Could be that who they have in mind for the Head Coach role has said, or his club has said, he’s not leaving till the summer. If so, he will be kept in the loop for signings and leavings etc. If DD is going to change the CEO then, to him and his ilk, that is a far more important decision. Perhaps he thinks the new CEO, should have an input on who is coming in, and perhaps, he/she will want to change the whole structure of the footballing department, especially if he/she might be coming from a football background. Ajax, Dortmund, Bayern etc. all have Football minded Executives, please not Pat Nevin :)). por cierto.

  11. SAINT STIVS @ 12:50 PM,

Yes, DD certainly “played a blinder”

Interesting quote from the BBC article…

“As part of the Stock Exchange announcement, the board also announced its intention to de-list from the London Stock Exchange and transfer its listings to AIM to take advantage of the greater flexibility of its rules.

How’s that worked out for us:((

Sad that Brian Quinn was involved in this, just hope he was unaware of the true intentions.

    Hail Hail

  12. Go tell the Spartim on

Logged on to see if there was another poll like the sell Eddie mantra, why not have one where we ask if Lennon should be replaced, crass, of course it is, but CQN are at the forefront of this shambolic type of attention seeking

  13. To get us till the end of the season, i would take Gallacher, Porteous and if Christie goes replace him with Hedges of Aberdeen…. Who knows what/who the future will bring.

  14. Pleasantly surprised at the response to todays article from the majority.

Regardless of your political persuasion its not difficult to see through the message.

  15. SS- glorious, I think she said, it’s going to be Bertie Auld for a few days…❄❄

  16. The big guy at the back...supporting Wee Oscar. on

The Celtic Board’s li’l unionist foot soldier with another crass attempt at deflection from the real issues surrounding the club. You’re as pathetic as you are predictable. I always though Kojo’s casual racism going unchecked was the nadir for this blog but clearly not.

  17. Celtic’s defence of this jolly is quite astounding, citing In November they were given the ok. Have Celtic not been watching the news- did they not see the cancellation of the 5 day Christmas gatherings, the heightening of restrictions and the warnings of worse to come?

Never have my club been soo far adrift and apart from their fanbase.

I fear I may never return as I cannot see how I can reconcile my financial support of spoilt, entitled millionaires who have neither the heart for a battle of the brains to notice when they are on the wrong side of the fence(s)..

  18. Timmy 7 noted….. You would like a up and coming European coach..

Were you one of the folk preaching… Philip Cocu??… May 2019….. He was getting lavish praise on here….. I’m still trying to find someone who will admit it tho…..

  19. JAMESGANG on 5TH JANUARY 2021 12:51 PM

    Agree with much of that.

Paul has IMO, got this wrong.

    Emotionally and factually.

Just watched FM daily briefing and she did not want to get drawn into this discussion.

ScotGov gave SFA guidance on “elite” sports travel back in November

and that guidance was duly passed on to clubs.

Our club has simply sent the wrong message and some of the pictures underline that.

I tried numerous times to register a NO vote with regard to selling Edouard. Your site would not register the vote. How many no votes did not register?

A total fix if ever there was one.

Is that us selling Eddie now?

  21. vinniethedog on 5th January 2021 1:58 pm

Nope definitely not, my friends who occasionally read this blog would get great mileage if I were openly supporting a Dutch coach.

I have no one in particular in mind, I just think we need a change in strategy.

    Or even just a strategy.

  22. squire danaher on

    San Luis/Gerry Bhoy

    Agreed.

FM was at pains at her briefing not to get involved.

I think that she will be giving Swinney a roasting for stirring up this hornet’s nest, which has merely allowed some to set loose the “big bad Proddy dog” squirrel.

Some may want to note that, far from the Huns lapping up ScotGov criticism of Celtic, they are still spitting feathers that there was no formal ScotGov recognition of their anniversary last weekend.

  23. I don’t think we shoulda gone on the trip and I woulda thought the same had we humped the huns…….

In fact I would have liked if the club had come out and said in light of the current Covid situation , we are not going on the Dubai training session.

It’s not like scoddland needs an excuse to abuse celtica , but we shouldn’t make it that easy for thum.

On another tack, it’s nice to see some of the digital tourists return – they seem awfy keen to wipe their dirty feet on the doormat…………

For all of our troubles I can’t fathom wanting to hurt the Club further by financial means – while most will be genuine Tims thurs a fair few sleekits at it too.

  24. Vinniethedog,

What’s the point you’re trying to make on Cocu in terms of Celtic? Is it to debunk the possibility that anything outside of our usual criteria for selection as a coach is doomed to failure due to Cocu’s experience at Derby?

People looking at the massively changing sands of football are looking for us to maximise everything at the disposal of the club to be successsful in and out of Scotland – the way we play, the philosophy, systems, diets, professionalism, excellence, proposition, facilities, recruitment, etc.

We need to modernise from top to bottom. Nothing guarantees automatic success but we update our ambition & thinking to give it a go. We’re stuck in a rut of cronyism, small thinking and mediocrity brought on by years of hubris (winning a proverbial 1 horse race).

People fail to see that this mediocre, parochial thinking means the distance between us and European ambition gets wider by the year. I’d like us to address that. Let’s give it a go.

What would you like us to do?

    HH

  25. I can’t help thinking back to August and our first ministers anger and vitriol when speaking about bolingoli…… I was angry as well….. But I’ve been angry a hundred times since especially with the hun gruesome twosome…… I have honestly never seen our first minister as angry since….. Which considering what’s all gone on…. Really is quite something.

For the genuine Tims it comes from the feeling of helplessness and assuming the only thing this board understands is £££. I’m one of them I’m afraid after almost 40 years I’m very close to chucking it.
