Scott Brown defence, pyro problems, the joy of Ryan Christie

265

Scott Brown was assaulted at Ibrox on Sunday and was relentlessly taunted for a family bereavement.  His trademark celebration was understated but marked the treatment he received.  He has been cited by the SFA for “not acting in the best interests of Association Football.”  There is plenty of precedent for Celtic’s legal team to call in his defence.

I have stood within two yards of Celtic fans throwing pyrotechnics onto the field of play.  I have also been in a stairwell, exiting a game with thousands of other packed Celtic fans, when a device went off to the delight of a handful, causing panic to hundreds of others.

If you think appealing to a desire not to damage the reputation of Celtic fans will stop those throwing pyrotechnics, you are wrong.  The reputation of Celtic fans is inconsequential to anyone who throws an item at a player or onto the field.  This is their chance to set their own rules, their personal reputation remains just fine.  If you think they are going to stop because Neil Lennon tells them to, you are deluded.

This will result in blanket video surveillance, a handful of prosecutions, and then we will get back to normal, when Celtic fans’ reputation was the envy of world football.

How much have we missed Ryan Christie?  It is not just what he personally brings, it is having him, Callum McGregor and James Forrest on the field at the same time allows us to move the ball at a pace that is not possible without them.

  1. Have a look on U-tube of fans displays around Europe and you’ll be able to view massive pyro displays . Whole terraces lit up with “flares” and clouds of coloured smoke.

This is in countries like Germany ,Austria ,Holland .

Whats happening in Scotland is just nothing compared .

I’m not a health or pyro-smoke device expert but where are the fans that have been injured ?

Unfortunately I havnt worked out how to put up these videos on here but there easy to find.

  2. Loving some of the arguments being put forward.

Very NRA — if the army has guns then we must have guns.

The choice is everyone must have pyro or no-one can have pyro.

Very libertarian / right wing mentalist.

This is my main point regarding the GB — they are just so derivative.

Following where others have led — not thinking for themselves.

They are we boys desperate to get into the dancing at shutting time through the back door.

We missed out on the 80’s casual nonsense and we were a better support for it.

We should ignore all this hackneyed and forced ultra tripe from Europe.

We need to be ourselves and do something different.

  4. In your report on the Pyro incident at the St Mirren game you say that the St Mirren Keeper needed medical attention. What would that consist of? He had heard a load bang, the physio came on and spoke with him. He didn’t receive any treatment

    Madmitch,

If you paid attention you’ll have read that the GB deny any involvement with letting off pyros even if they do support their use.

You maintain your daily record driven agenda that it’s all the GBs fault simply because you don’t have another group to blame.

As for your drivel about controlling the smoke by heading up before they go off is again subject of random wind change, I have a far more practical understanding than you. Unfortunately the poor understanding is your own, you obviously don’t have a clue what you are talking about.

All the pyros could be replaced with simulation and that is what should be done to ensure double standards are not imposed.

    Let’s all…,

Again remind us all when firecrackers were trrown “INTO” the stand?

They are thrown out of the stand.

Again I don’t support any of it either by the board or the customers.

telling everyone about the real world and how they’ve all grown up too

the jungle and celtic end of old were full of some of the biggest rockets to walk the earth

they dint have coke but had eldorado and the likes by the gallon

remember thedays when folk actually took a carry out into the games

at least the GB dont p1sh where they stand – that said – loved the jungle

  9. C @ 9.56

You are wrong at a very basic level — the GB have used “pyro” in the past.

The Heid Puddock on KDS has detailed their use so please wind your neck in.

As for the fireworks off the stand roof — the risk assessment must be pretty well known and pretty generic as it has been used quite widely at football and other events.

Plus you have the 30M safe space if you do stuff on the centre of the park rather than in amongst the crowd in the stands.

    Bamboo,

You’ll never convince the snowflakes, they melt with indignation, for me if rules are to be applied then they should be applied equally across the board, unfortunately people like madmitch, let’s all do the huddle and adi dasher believe that the elite should be exempt from their own rules.

They are continuing to shut down real news outlets because they fear the truth or their actions and motives being exposed.

Reports are just coming out that whistleblower-truth-teller Julien Assange is about to be kicked out of embassy in London. Then no doubt he’ll be immediately arrested by the forces of darkness and delivered straight to their US masters.

broonie forced the keeper to play on just like he forced alfredo and kent to hit him

  13. Oliver Burke, Timothy Weah,Benovic, injury prone, same as Sumonivic, lustig,Izzaguri, that’s 6 players who Celtic need to replace, and a few more that are out of contract,so no more excuses from the board, they need to spend serious money on a few quality players, not loanees, and a new manager with fresh ideas, how the team should play, not this playing from the back,Neil Lennon was the Celtic manager a few years ago,for some reason he quit Celtic,so he in my opinion isn’t the manager for Celtic.

  14. A few years ago at the cup final we had a spare ticket and took ANGELGABRIEL with us. Some rocket let off a green smoke bomb in the Celtic end, we were in the South Stand upper near the corner flag and we were choking.

God knows how the people around that coped. Anyone with breathing difficulties would have been in big trouble.

No pyros, no smoke bombs, no excuses made for the morons who bring them in.

I saw the GB statement. They have their take on things and their own way of expressing themselves. I don’t happen to agree with some of that. That’s life.

However, the one thing I really take exception to is the GB’s ongoing use of the word Ultra to describe themselves or what they associate with.

Having been the victim of Ultras during my time living in Europe, I associate the word primarily with fascists, bullies and neanderthal attitudes to football and it’s enjoyment. I’m not at all sure what the GB think they gain by using this word to describe themselves. Maybe they think others will be intimidated. Certainly the ultras around Europe are that.

In this day and age, when the use of language to affirm identity is considered a key indicator of values, I find the ongoing use of this term to be, at the very least, odd, though sinister is probably closer to the mark. I wish they would disassociate themselves from it as, in my view. It stands for everything Celtic is not about.

The GB have their own website try there for your info.

The GB stopped using pyros a while back because of the perceived health claims.

Safe standing is not something to enjoy at the moment — it is an accident that is waiting to happen.

Overcrowding through “migration” seems to be the way of things at the moment.

  21. C @ 10.14

Then their website is a bit disconnected from their KDS spokesman.

He said that they were using it but in context — Arg / SA style display in the autumn had flares for effect.

a guy used an interesting phrase on twitter about the away ticket situation

he said the away allocation needs “watered down”, i think i get what he means, no idea how it gets implemented in practice

possibly dont give any section of the support blocks of tickets – buses, fat cats, green brigade etc

and also offer a ticket swap facility – where supporters who have a ticket for an away game can swap it for a line of coke, that should keep a few of the wee dicks out :)

seriously though, i dont think there is a full answer to this, but a watering down of how away tickets are allocated might help

i fear though that the club is too focussed on making sure the fat cats are happy that they treat the rest of the ticket allocation as a secondary issue not worthy of much attention, it looks like now they might be forced into doing something sensible with it

  23. Dearie Me, the club are getting cheated, the huns are breaking all the rules they can, the government and the polis are on the backs of our supporters, yet the grey brigade, who wish they were young again are arguing over a squirrel, if it wasn’t so ludicrous it would make you weep, the media have done their job as ever, controlling the masses and like lemmings they are swallowing it hook line and sinker.

“Dave King is free to take up the chairman’s role after being passed “fit and proper” by the Scottish Football Association.

King, who owns 14.5% of Rangers’ shares, led a successful bid to oust the previous board at Ibrox in March.

However, the governing body needed time to assess King’s suitability, given his tax convictions in South Africa.

The fact he sat on the Rangers board prior to administration and liquidation was taken into consideration.”

    BBC, May 2015

Oh, and was this the last time they used the ‘L’ word when referring to Rangers?

Assange’s card has been marked since the new corrupt government was put in power, it was only a matter of time.

Assange will be executed in America for espionage. The trial has been concluded.

  28. I’ve grown tired of the GB and the so called ultra groups – the self declared super Celtic supporters that feel they can ignore the wishes of most Celtic fans and behave as they see fit.

I’d be in favour of Lawwell taking action against them if he can’t get anywhere with talks.

I wouldn’t take my child to an away Celtic match if I had to sit anywhere near these guys. Celtic need to stop them or remove them.

I would suggest that you cannot see the wood from the trees regarding the safe standing overcrowding.

The muppets causing it are easy to spot because they are the ones that caused the empty seats in the adjoining areas of the LL lower for the Sheep game that was a sell out.

For the record the GB guy on KDS said that he was aware of it and had been talking to the club regarding potential solutions.

So credit where it is due — he and his mob see it as an issue and are trying to sort it out.

  30. I don’t think Assange will be executed.

    Madmitch,

It’s no the GBs responsibility, it’s the responsibility of the club security, so irrespective of the GB offering assistance to the club security team, the same ones who victimized them, I would advise the GB to keep their distance on this as they are likely to become the scapegoats again.

  35. Firework injury fan goes home

A woman who suffered a deep cut to the face when a firework hit her at a Premiership football ground has left hospital.

Denise Butler was injured as the firework shot sideways from the pitch and into a stand at Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Molineux stadium, just before Saturday’s lunchtime game against Newcastle United.

Mrs Butler, from Telford in Shropshire, was taken to Wolverhampton’s New Cross Hospital where she had surgery to clean and stitch the wound.

She was discharged on Monday morning after spending two nights under observation.

    Scar fear

A hospital spokeswoman said: “She had quite a bad laceration on her face, so they had to clean it thoroughly and, because of the area they were treating, put her under general anaesthetic and stitch it up afterwards.”

Mrs Butler’s husband, Martyn, who was not at the match, said he was not angry that the pre-match display had injured his wife.

“It was just an unfortunate accident. It is just one of those things.

“I’m more concerned about the injury to Denise at the moment.

“We don’t know whether there is going to be a permanent scar.”

An inquiry is under way into how the firework, which should have flown vertically, shot sideways into the Billy Wright stand, where Mrs Butler, a Wolves fan, was sitting with her 11-year-old son Luke.

Seven other fans also needed medical treatment.

Jez Moxey, the chief executive of Wolverhampton Wanderers football club, said he was very sorry about what happened.

“Our sympathies, and thoughts are with the lady at this time,” he said.

“Obviously, this was a very frightening experience for everyone involved and we are all shocked.

“We have licence to run these displays and have used the same company, Jubilee Fireworks, for the last two seasons.

    Windy weather

“It is the same display that we use for most matches and a risk assessment is carried out both by the club and the company in advance of every display.

“A full investigation has now been launched by the club as well as the local authority to find out to find out what went wrong.

“But I can say without doubt now that there will be no more displays here at Molineux as a consequence of today’s (Saturday’s) incident.”

Several witnesses said that one firework blew over before it was ignited.

Chris Pearce, managing director of Jubilee Fireworks, said: “It appears that a comet star pyrotechnic effect fired horizontally instead of vertically, and we cannot be sure why that has happened.

“We assess the weather conditions before displays and there was no consideration about not having a display.

“These are not the type of effects that tend to be affected by the wind and it would have to have been extremely strong to have blown the firework off.”

  36. CANAMALAR IT LOOKS LIKE OCD OBSESSION

See the last statement from the GB – “we support the safe use of pyrotechnics”.

They are not qualified to assess what is safe. They have no right to subject fellow fans to smoke bombs or flash bangs. No right whatsoever.

  37. So if the authorities genuinely want to protect fans from injury they shouldn’t allow any form of official pyrotechnic display or celebration because they cannot guarantee public safety.
