Scottish football on solid ground

1313

Any away win by a Scottish club in the Netherlands is noteworthy but Aberdeen’s win last night is even more significant. It is a sign that a recovery is underway in one of Scottish football’s perennial underachievers. St Johnstone’s result is more of the same after last year’s achievements. Motherwell’s sorry exit is a lesson on being unprepared….

If Celtic can reach the Champions League group stage for the third successive season, there’s reason to believe our game is on solid ground after the years of excess and abandon.

David Trezeguet on Premier Sports. Never realised that he was born in France of Argentine parents. Lived in Argentina and could have played for both countries.

  2. This is Balde’s first game isn’t it – he had time off following his father’s death. So neither his fitness or mental state are likely to be at their best as yet.

McGeogh has looked most likely. Watt looks like he is trying to prove something, but is attempting to do it all on his own. We need a bit of combination play between our creative players.

  3. Big Georges Fan Club - Hail, Hail, Wee Oscar on

Watt’s been poor. Realise out left not his best position, but he’s overrun the ball a couple of times, and given away possesion too easily. He’s only settling back in to Celtic, but he must improve if he hopes to break into the first team.

For a big laddie, Balde isn’t much of a presence – again, though, he is just coming back from burying his dad, so it would be harsh to judge anything from today’s display – just good to see the big bhoy back playing.

We are one man down in the CM and he can’t fill all the gaps.

He used to play attacking left midfield or left wing for the youths.

I do have a wee worry that Ronny is trying to fit square pegs into round holes by playing Watt and Griffiths in wide roles to suit the format he wants to play.

Big Jock never asked players to do the things that he believed they couldn’t.

The quality of the team on the park was the first point to come out from the contributors and the need to set out a vision or strategy was also brought up.

On the quality issue I’d not want to lose more than one valuable player per season.

Fraser Forster this year and no more. Problem is keeping valuable players who want to go.

In my book,F.F. is the most valuable player we have.

  16. What’s the crack about the Legia game in Reekie? Coming to the UK and want to take my Bhoy and ghirl to murreyfield.how do I go about getting tickets? Thanks for any info. Bhoys 17 ghirl 13.cheers.

  17. Left wing is probably not Watt’s best position but he needs to give it a go if he wants a future at Celtic. Ronny plays with a lone striker and there’s too much competition for that spot.

    Watt’s been lively tho.

  18. Very good workout for the youths, crowded out by 3-4 players every time they get the ball.

Dylan picked out for special treatment as he is the best player on the park.

Tony looking promising, have to admit i did’nt know Henderson or Biton was playing till i saw a close up of them.

Think the heat is getting to the bhoys and without a leader on the pitch they are looking very lost at times.

FF can go if the money is right.

We should be looking for £15mill as he is at the top of his game.

    No shame in cashing in.

The hard bit will be getting PL to buy into the growth agenda with the proceeds.

  22. The Battered Bunnet on

Just nippin’ in and out again.

Twardzik is a midfielder, forward looking, good footballer. He’s no more a left back than Ross Murdoch. Playing him at left back indicates an absence of alternative for the position, rather than a definition of his best position.

Youth Development: We have squads of 20 boys at Under 20 level all the way down to Under 9. The objective is to produce players that contribute to the first team. A success is indicated when a player signs his SECOND professional contract.

If we get one such player each year the programme is considered a success. Periodically 2 players might make it from the same group.

The secondary objective is to make money. Pretty much all of our players from U17 upwards will make a career in the pro game at the level that suits them. We receive training compo when they move on to other clubs, as most of them do. It’s quite a tidy earner.

Winning matches, cup, leagues at age group level indicates the relative standard of the squad, not the individual players. Dundee Utd for example don’t tend to do too well in trophy terms, but are producing more than one excellent kid each year. That’s a youth development plan at its optimum.

    TBB

  23. MM

Fair enough but I’d prefer to see him playing players in their best/favoured position especially if his plan is to assess what’s at his disposal before looking at bringing anyone else in.
