Scottish Greens football fantasy

192

I see the Scottish Greens have decided it is a poor decision to allow fans to congregate in pubs to watch football.  Their proposal is to allow Saturday’s fixture from Celtic Park to be free to air on TV, despite, you know, all the contracts and stuff.

There is not a shred of self-awareness with the crowd.  The Greens hold the balance of power in the Scottish Parliament, the SNP depend on them to pass legislation, in return for which they get nominal nods to their pet projects.

The Greens have no levers of control over TV contracts, but they exercise unique influence over the Scottish Government, whose policy it has been for months for football fans to congregate at indoor pubs instead of socially distanced and policed at open-air stadiums.

This reminds me of Life of Brian, the People’s Front were full of plans that would achieve nothing and refused to take the clear path before then.  Until Brian turned up, of course.  They have become a meme.

  1. Reading the BBC Scotland gossip page this morning.

    They are beside themselves.

    Let’s beat “ them” on Saturday .

  2. Will pass on politics and policies in favour of the on-field stuff.

    From prev article:

BIGWAVY – what we heard of a plan was to get a trick-cyclist in to fix the allegedly brittle mentality that has seen us plummet from treble-treble status to second top with a game in hand. Was it ‘Dynamo’ ;)

Somebody said it the other day, this COVID pish will galvanise our bhoys; KTF and look forward to it!

  3. So the Greens have asked the Scottish Govt to engage with Sky and ask if it might be possible. That’s a slightly different premise to just demanding it be free to air. Sky may be amenable to that assuming they were compensated for any loss of revenue. Would that be a bad thing?

  4. Imagine a certain Bertie Auld drafted in to the dressing room to give a team talk……so what would 10.30 say?

  5. A cheeky wee 10.30am new post Paul to throw all of us Podium Pouncers off the track.

    Mmmm

  7. The furlough scheme is far more in-imaginable than Sky making a one-off gesture and PR coup. But the former happened.

Meanwhile, visitors from planet zog arrive on the fast-warming, increasingly-flooded earth. They read human hieroglyphics, where the party specifically designed to save the planet is criticised by someone more interested in 22 men chasing a ball. …. regardless of the often-lethal plague that presently accompanies mass gatherings.

I hear you fella. I’m worried (what’s new eh?)

A proper team system, playing our best players in their best positions and our superior talent should win the day.

The COVID19 situation will have no impact whatsoever on those on the pitch.

If – as seems likely – we start with Julien, Duffy and Ajer, we surely need to start Griff and play for corner kicks.

I see the idiots running g Ni By Mouth, have reacted with horror at a new pin badge depicting the execrable Jimmy Bell holding a severed head of Lenny aloft. All well and good ,you might think ,until you read on,and they somehow manage to bring in the old”Seperate schools”,probably to blame, guff.

  13. No self awareness from THEM? Jesus read your own articles once in a while …

Let’s examine what the logic behind the Green Party position is here.

They think – indeed, they know – that because of the limited number of people with Sky in their homes (and Celtic’s virtual season tickets) that the real danger of Covid-19 spreading this weekend is if those houses which DO have Sky are full of people.

    That’s a perfectly reasonable assumption.

They suggest that on public health grounds that the government should be asking Sky IF IT IS POSSIBLE for the game to be made available to everyone. If it”s possible. It’s not a demand. It’s a suggestion. And it’s one of the more interesting ones I’ve heard.

There’s nothing particularly unreasonable about it either.

There was a time when this site would have been wholeheartedly in favour of a proposal like that. But its hysterical anti-government tone gets louder by the day so that even when a very decent idea is floated it is seen as proof that people in our parliament have lost their minds.

It certainly sounds like some folk are, but none of them are at Holyrood.

Anytime anyone says that to me, I usually respond as follows:

“I absolutely agree – separate schools is a big problem. I have the solution though, send everyone to Catholic schools…”

Usual response is funny – apoplexy, spluttering, but…but…but

They don’t think separate schools is the problem, only Catholic schools.

  15. Another example of the Green’s lack of self awareness (though some might call it two-faced hypocrisy) is from Glasgow. Nationally the Greens supported the Scottish Government’s budget that led to cuts to council budgets. In Glasgow the council has shut a number of libraries pre and during COVID as a result of budget cuts. The Greens In Glasgow are campaigning against the library closures with no self awareness of their MSPs support of the budget cuts.

I’d been wondering if we would do likewise getting Edouard back. I think he’s allowed to travel tomorrow. I’d been hoping that he would be able to play some part on Saturday but that’s probably a very optimistic wish. I think whatever team we start with on Saturdays l, we’ll be taking a few risks, given those coming back from injury or making a debut.

  25. Not sure if this discussion is about the Scots Greens, or the proposal to freeview the game on Saturday. I have no dog in the Scots political fight so will leave that discussion right there, nor do I feel a reminder of how politics works the world over is entirely relevant.

Taking the source of the proposal out of the equation (play the ball, not the man), It’s a simple idea put out for discussion. We’re all fully aware and comfortable that Sky hold the rights and therefore the ultimate decision. Sky freeviewed games regularly after football returned from lockdown (on Pick TV), so it’s not outwith their business model.

However I fear this will fall on stony ground. Firstly the game is going head-to-head with the Merseyside derby on Sky’s football schedule, a marketing dream to sell “exclusivity”. We all know that Sky see far more value in the EPL, and would therefore be reticent to risk drawing viewers (and potential future customers) away from that fixture. There’s also an argument that the rationale provided (stop people congregating in others’ homes) would apply to a lesser or greater extent to any game, including Everton v Liverpool.
