Season for points to be dropped in unlikely places

751

Yesterday’s result at Ibrox gave some welcome encouragement but it would be wrong to read too much into it.  Rangers still have the kind of lead that would have Celtic thoroughly confident of a league win and, lest we forget, St Johnstone collected all three points from Celtic Park already this season.

The win at Inverness was much more important.  The Highlanders are bottom of the league but that is a false position.  Two points separate Hibs, Dunfermline, Aberdeen and Inverness, while Kilmarnock, who shipped six goals to Inverness at home two weeks ago, are only a further two points away.  Even with 10 men Inverness remained well organised yesterday, don’t be surprised if they move ahead of the four teams above them in the weeks to come.

The league is remarkably tight from fourth place St Johnstone to bottom Inverness, where fewer points separate the teams than split Celtic and Rangers. Don’t, therefore, be surprised if points are dropped in the most unlikely places.

  1. Celtic_First – Even if this was a “normal” season it is ludicrous to suggest it is finished as I pointed out. Naismith is gone. 30% of their goals and an unquantifiable contribution to their attacking threat. Jelavic will be sold to the first bidder. Ditto for him. Their bench on Saturday was young boys.

Who is going to score their goals post January?

Lenny will fancy his chances if he is 7 points behind, 3 derby’s to go and his first choice team (including the super important Izaguirre) coming back to fitness.

    Game on I say…..

” ….. Maybe we could start a campaign for the season to be

shortened, sort of in reparation for the sins of the past … .”

Well, they have had one season when they got an extension !

Of course, they wanted another one.

If a shortened season turned out not to be enough they would ask

for it to be backdated to end of October …… and then complain if

    it was refused.

Don’t think anyone can beat the Italian media for scouting / transfer speculation.

Palermo have lots of money . Napoli have lots of money and are about to get a lot more if they accept Manchester City’s much reported 100 million euro offer for Hamsik, Cavani and Lavezzi .

Much worry in Italy over the numbers of ” foreigners ” playing in Serie A . — I read recently that @ 52 % of Serie A players are not Italian .

The Italian national team has been improving but they were given the run around by an excellent Uruguay last week . Fabulous defending and counter -attacking from Uruguay —- a team containing many players who play in Serie A !.

    Best wishes.

  6. Rogueleader – re; Jelavic. It might be worse than that for them.

I read somewhere that he is playing with a cyst on his knee that requires surgery and they are hanging on till Jan till they can get a loanee deal to replace him.

So they lose their scorer and don’t get the cash !! No idea of the veracity of the story though.

  9. A star is born – the arrival of Lubo

By: Joe Sullivan on 21 Nov, 2011 08:02

IT was on this day in 1998 that a star was born in the East End of Glasgow when Lubomir Moravcik burst on to the scene in no uncertain terms.

A few weeks earlier his arrival at Celtic was met with indifference by the Scottish press. One columnist was moved to describe the transfer as ‘laughable’ and label him as nothing more than one of Dr Jozef Venglos’ ‘pals’.

Yet after 90 mercurial minutes in his debut match against Dundee, which Celtic won 6-1 on November 7, 1998, everyone realised that Celtic had a special talent on their hands.

He was outstanding, with his sublime cross for Henrik Larsson’s hat-trick goal the highlight of the match. Costing just £300,000 from Duisburg, Moravcik immediately looked like the steal of the decade.

Lubo had been a Celtic player for less than a month by the time Rangers arrived at Celtic Park on November 21 for the first Glasgow derby of the 1998/99 season. It’s a game that can make or break even seasoned professionals but Lubo was born for this stage.

Some 11 minutes had elapsed when he stepped on to Larsson’s dummy and whipped an unerring left-foot finish into the bottom corner from 18 yards. Just four minutes into the second half, Lubo was at it again – powering home a bullet header to give Celtic a 2-0 lead.

A Larsson double and a solitary Mark Burchill strike rounded off the famous 5-1 victory

Despite all the goals scored it had to be the all round performance by Moravcik as he weaved his magical left foot all through the game. His skill was something to behold and there wasn’t a single player in the Rangers team that could prevent him from doing what he wanted.

One of the most memorable moments of the game was when he ran down the left-wing, and with Sergio Porrini closing him down he darted one way before flicking the ball between the bamboozled Italian’s legs in a piece of skill that had the Celtic fans wanting more and Porrini wanting to get as far away from Lubo as possible.

Lubo himself recalled: “Before this game we didn’t expect a big result against Rangers because they were dominating in the league. I was a little bit scared about what would happen in the game because it was my first derby although I was very motivated for the game

“But I was a bit scared – about the result, not about my game because you can play well but if it’s not a good result, it wouldn’t be good for me, but it all went well for me, I scored two goals and everything changed for me after that.”

  10. I notice that the pretence on the ban on the BBC is wearing a bit thin with direct quotes from “coach of the decade” super Ali. How can the BBC offer direct quotes if no one’s speaking to them. Should we tell Mr Whyte? I hope he’s not angry.

Celtic striker Anthony Stokes’ partner fears for her unborn baby after mindless neds attack couple’s home

Nov 21 2011 By Amy Devine

GUTLESS neds have attacked the home of Celtic ace Anthony Stokes – leaving his pregnant girlfriend fearing for her unborn child.

It’s understood Stokes’s partner Debbie was alone in the house when yobs smashed a front window in the early hours. The striker was away with his club, preparing for their game at Inverness.

The couple’s rented house was also targeted by a drunken mob after an Old Firm game last year.

And the latest attack was the last straw for Debbie, who has told her neighbours she wants to move.

Jim Armstrong, who lives near the couple in Broxburn, West Lothian, said: “It’s such a shame they could be forced out by this behaviour.

“They are fantastic neighbours, but understandably Debbie doesn’t want to raise a child there. She’s seven or eight months pregnant.”

The yobs struck at about 2.30am on Saturday. Council worker Jim, 51, added: “I saw Debbie trying to tape up the window later so I told her I’d do it. I’ve patched it up just to make it safe.”

Jim believes the couple spent the night in Glasgow after the attack.

He said: “They are such nice people – they even answer the door to kids looking for autographs. They certainly don’t deserve this.”

Another neighbour added: “It’s a main road and everyone knows who lives there. Anthony has become a target for drunken idiots.”

Police appealed for information on the attack. Stokes’s agent declined to comment.

Yobs also attacked the house last October, chanting death threats and hurling a wheelie bin at a window while Stokes’s parents were inside.

Celtic said the latest attack was “very concerning, on the back of last season’s events”.

They added: “We hope police will deal with the matter very seriously.”

A footballer’s window has been broken in an attack on his West Lothian home.

Anthony Stokes was away from the house in Broxburn when vandals targeted it at 2.30am on Saturday but it is believed his partner was at home.

The Celtic striker scored twice in his team’s game against Inverness later in the day.

Officers are appealing for witnesses to the vandalism.

A spokesman said: “Lothian and Borders Police are investigating after the window of a property in Broxburn, West Lothian, was damaged.

“No one was injured during the incident, which happened around 2.30am on Saturday. However, anyone with information that can assist officers with their enquiries is asked to come forward.”

The current Celtic team is tailor made for Rangers. They can bypass not just their midfield, but ours as well, with high punts which drop in and around the penalty box with snow on top. They hit them from whatever area of the park they gain possession in. Their forwards have a better than even chance of winning the ball in the air against all of our defenders, and even if they don’t, they are all very good at collapsing theatrically to win freekicks in very dangerous positions (well, dangerous with our defence).

Since they resorted to this at the LC Final last season, we have struggled to even clear our lines against them and have been unable to build any momentum.

It’s the most basic kind of football, and is far less effective against most other SPL teams, because they’ve all got big lumps at the back who can compete physically with their forward line.

If we signed Ross Tokely and Gary Kenneth, and only played them against Rangers, their threat against us would be all but nullified.

  16. bournesouprecipe

2 from 4 goals came on the break, so you’re half right. Yeah, but you can only counterattack against an attacking team.

Look, it’s the SPL. If you want to play football the Rangers way, then fair enough. They’ve always played like that – defend, wait for the inevitable mistake, and capitalise. It works most of the time, but when teams do a professional job, like St Johnstone on Sat, you have to be more creative – and Rangers have no plan B.

We’ve always been a more attacking side, I think most reasonable minded (not meant that in the SNP sense) people would agree. We’ve built our team and bought our players around the idea of breaking teams down (aprt from in Europe, where we’ve got Sammi). As the league gets towards spring there’ll be a lot more teams playing cagey, so good for us, bad for thems. They’ve already lost Naisy (pure cryin shame, so it is) – would be just terrible if they had to sell Jelavic or Davis in the window.

All the more sinister when Burley who was really at the game called it a red card strraight away and McLean says the ref must have been the only one to see that plus he was rather quick in getting the red card out, as I nsay all very sinister a phrase Mclean is prone to using

  18. If they start the campaign for a shorter league season, they can always quote the famous match between Celtic and Dundee that was played a week before Seville to give Celtic time to prepare.

I realise that was the cast-iron evidence they used to convince the impartial football authorities before that there needed to be an extension in 2008, but they shouldn’t let that stop them.
