Season will be decided on the field, not in the courts

1029

I received a text early evening on 18th August last year: “Gongalves starts”.  Former Hearts player, Jose Gongalves, was one of a handful of players FC Sion signed illegally in the summer 2011 transfer window and he had been named to start against Celtic in the Europa League qualifier, first leg.

As a contest, the tie was over.  There followed two matches with considerable effort and drama from both teams but the eventual outcome was, literally, never in doubt, the courts would have their way.  Sion would be expelled from the competition and Celtic would progress to the group stage.

Today Celtic’s only remaining competitor from the chasing pack for the SPL title is up in court to face the HM Revenue and Customs.  The courts will have their way again but although you may feel the outcome of Rangers tax case is inevitable (I do), the impact on this season’s league championship is less assured.  Should they lose, Rangers have the option to appeal, postponing any negative impact on the company until next season at the earliest.

If Rangers have, or can generate, enough cash to keep the lights on this season the league will be nip and tuck until the end of the season. The tax case will attract most attention but if you are looking for indications of how the season is likely to go, keep an eye open for cash related incidents.

Well done to Rangers’ broadcast partner, STV, for their story this morning on SPL discipline.  They report the Ibrox club have the worst disciplinary record in the league, having accumulated a total of 41 bookings, contrasting starkly with the cool class at Celtic Park who are best behaved in the league with only 20 bookings.

With Beram Kayal out for the season Ki Sung-Yeung is the Celtic player closest to a suspension, a further three yellow cards would put the Korean over the threshold.  Rangers have Lafferty one booking, Edu and Bocanegra two, with Goian, Broadfoot, Bartley and Whittaker all three away from a suspension.  Lee McCulloch has only been booked twice this season but shows enormous potential.

You make a good point about the phone in’s, but it’s not going to stop people phoning in, just like the campaign to stop people buying the rags, they still do, people get frustrated at the lack of info from the MSM and rightly so want to vent their spleen.

Better imo that we have callers like Terry, Sean, Reiperman showing up these crettins for what they are than the ususl tripe that they spout.

I understand the ratings will soar after tonight, but they will shirly die a death, when all this is done and dusted there will be little need to call them, just my humble opinion mind.

  2. Burnley78

No you are not being harsh. I don’t understand why Celtic fans would opt to listen to RC for football debate or read the opinions of journalists like Jackson or Leckie or who’s the guy in the Express?, they are hardly Brian Glanville.

Surely they don’t need to be told that Celtic are the greatest little club in the world by the Scottish Media nobodies?

And if they do they’ll wait a very long time.

  3. CultsBhoy loves being 1st on

Just seen Rankin’s goal for first time. FF had nae chance – correctly positioned but ball too an unatural swerving bounce…criticism last nigh totally unjustified

  4. Just ordered the second series of Breaking Bad from Amazon. £9.99

I think I like the fact its not from US with the predictable format.

Interesting there are several actors who appeared in The Killing. Guess like Scotland a small thespian pool…

ok thank you, i just thought that for a meagre outlay

it would add interest to various games etc.

Any bets ive had before have been win only.

my friend gave me the winner of last years tour de france

  8. 67Heaven ... I am Neil Lennon..!! Tick Tock !! on

Been reading back, some interesting stuff…….I don’t think they will be able to sell ANY of their players and with their dependence on this money to stay afloat, I think they will go into administration.early Feb……the administrator will then sell the whole team for what he / she can get…….that money will last for about a month and then they will be liquidated…..all this media nonsense is of no consequence……the ‘writing is on the wall’

    TICK TOCK, WHAT SHOCK….

THEY’VE CLOSED THE DOOR, AND CHANGED THE LOCK

AND NOTHING CHANGES WITH ALL THEIR TALK

  10. iam sure i read it was paul mcginley not padriag harrington that got abused by young golf fans, and regoarding celtic football why do they have parks of hamilton for the team bus, everybody knows that park is a director at rangers, so comon celtic wee are a big we should have our own bus,but knowing that mob that run celtic it wont happen ,

I take your point regarding the shows being orchestrated by the producer and presenters.

Would you not agree that the Celtic supporters who have continued to call in are now altering the agenda which had previously been set?

Many have noticed that the shear volume of those wishing to highlight the tax case are drastically moving the goalposts.

  12. CultBhoy

who in the right mind thought Forster was at fault for the goal?

The goal the Holy Goalie conceded to Rankin at Easter Road was a howler and a season changer but Saturday’s was a super strike and thankfully cost us nothing.

  13. Drambowiecelt

Those bets I put up earlier were to win their respective leagues etc, or to be placed.

I normally only bet on single games, and any time I win I indulge a % of the winnings on daft bets which for little outlay there is a good return.

Been doing it for years and has worked so far, retired early 50’s, no debts, cave bought and paid for.

Even with the corruption that exists within scottish football, the hun are easy to make money on, when they were drawing on saturday, and the time was ticking away their odds were getting better and better, and if they hadn’t scored, I had faith that they would have gotten their obligatry penalty, they didn;t need it, but I won a few bob all the same.

I am the Mark that was on Clyde. They cut me off before I got to make the point that I was building to (they must have smelled a rat), which was that the campaign to fast-track the newco to the SPL will be lead by the media because it is in fact They, and not Celtic or Scottish football who need a form of Rangers in the SPL. They are fighting for their careers which are built on Celtic – Rangers controversy. That is why they cannot be objective on this issue. They will continue to tell anyone who’ll listen that Celtic needs Rangers or Scottish football needs Rangers when it is really just the football hacks’ survival that depends on rangers continuing in the SPL.

    Thanks for the kind comments.

was so surprised by now loud it was

    the whole car was shakin

i thought to myself, my God, is that how much we’ve had to endure all these years that i should yell so loud cos of what they’ve done to us?

    what a life it’s been !

let’s see what happens this week / this year

I think their only agenda is controversy….they dont care about any valid perspectives, the love the ‘fundementalists’ thay can vet all calls as suits them and agree who plays what role before they come through. Thats why Terry et al get on……good for ratings….

I have sat in their wee studio and watched it !!!

any of you guys that watched The Killing now following Borgen ? new on beeb4 , danish political drama.

    ………………………………………………………….

Watched all 4 episodes so far on BBC iplayer earlier today. Absolutely brilliant and right up there with The Killing. Think I’ll move to Denmark to watch some great TV.

  21. Rieperman and Clyde.

At the end of the show, Keevins was accused of bad form for stating that Rieperman’s point was based on hatred.

He was accused also of not just misrepresenting the caller but of doing so after the call was completed and that he hid not have the bottle to say it live toRieperman.

Keevins said that he had no idea if callers were still on the line.

This is the mark of the man …… his accusation of hateful motive was made about 25 minutes after the call !

There had been several other callers, traffic reports and adverts in between.

  22. iki , these adverts you mean ?

“I have sat in their wee studio and watched it!!!”

Are you George Galloway per chance :-))

We shall have to agree to differ. I do agree with many of your points but the tide has changed its no longer “fundamentalists” calling in, its knowledgeable and articulate Celts.

  24. Thanks to everyone for their comments on my call today. I really had no idea I was going to cause this much fuss.

Can I just confirm that I did try to get back on the show to pull Keevins up on his allegations of hatred but to no avail. I will be contacting Clyde 1 tomorrow demanding they take my call and give me the right to address these charges. We’ll see how that goes.

I have not had the opportunity to listen to the show since so if anyone has a link I would be very grateful indeed. The SSB rewind link on their website only goes as far as Jan 9th for some reason.

There was a discussion whiter FF should be our goalie or if we should have non loan more mature solution ( which I partly support) anyhow some were citing Sat goal as an example.. But looking at, attending elite Goalkeeping sessions as I do with son no 2 ( led by Jim Leighton)…looked like FF was correctly positioned.. The bounce was not one anybody anticipated?

i was in Copenhagen last year for a works thing, very good noticing locations that had been in the killing.

and have travelled a lot but this place definately has the fittest lookers anywhere, what a place.

i hosted two slovaks last week who were over, they spent the weekend in embra, and i was all set to give them the places i like to go see when i an through there, however, no need, they said, and took out some sort of Rebus tour book.

    interesting.

  27. hamiltontim

I was merely quoting his expression….. ‘fundementalists’ not suggesting that i see the callers as such….

Sadly i dont think it makes any difference to the show if the points are well or badly put or dealt with, as long as they stir it up a bit and are controversial.
